PODIATRISTS AND HUMANITARIAN EFFORTS
IL Podiatrist and Scholl Student Return from Mission Trip to India

Dr. Martin Yorath of Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and Lalita Turaga, Scholl College Class of 2015 recently returned from a  two-week medical mission trip to India. Prior to leaving, Turaga reached out to the Missionaries of Charity, Kolkata, founded by Mother Teresa. They were thrilled to learn about her idea and screened patients in advance.

(L-R) Lalita Turaga, Drs. Martin Yorath, and R.K. Choudhary

Sixteen surgeries were performed in six days; primarily posterior tibial tendon transfers for foot drop and reconstructive surgeries for manifestations of Charcot with leprosy. A simple Esmarch bandage was used for exsanguination. All surgeries were performed under spinal anesthesia and no cautery was required. Dr. Yorath also presented a lecture entitled “Advances in Management of Charcot Foot” at the Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Center in Hyderabad, and was subsequently featured in India’s national newspaper, The Hindu

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS
Bret Ribotsky: Where do we stand today with ACFAS and APMA?

Dr. Jordan Grossman

Jordan Grossman: The separation of the two organizations began in 2008 as a simple choice to membership that dealt with giving each person a choice, and allowing each member to determine if they were getting value from the organizations for their membership. The bylaws vote by the membership was to change this. Today, this might become a moot point as the APMA had a special task force meeting two weeks ago to discuss the whole Affiliate Status structure in its bylaws.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR)
From: Jim Fisher, DPM

I have used DOX since April 2010. The learning curve was steep for me.  I was able to learn the nuances of the program well, though not easily. The capabilities of it are stunning...once you learn how to do it; and when you do learn, it is like riding a bike; you most likely will not forget. I have my complaints, of course. For some problems, I have made a "workaround" that enhanced the program and made it easier for me to use. This being said, I have no experience with any other program.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Brian Kiel, DPM, Jennifer Ryder, DPM

It seems that there is a simple solution to your problem. Don't schedule so many of these patients in a day. Limit yourself to 8 or 10 per day, or 1 or 2 per hour, and leave the remaining openings for the other patients.

Brian Kiel, DPM, Memphis, TN, Footdok4@gmail.com

You need to take control of your schedule each day and not let it control you. I allow for 7 new and 17 established patients each day and train the staff when it’s okay to double book. I have a scheduling template in place to allow time for new patients and established patients with emergencies to be seen ASAP. I have not had to discontinue any type of service or any kind of insurance with a good template and well-trained staff. I work four days per week, and have maintained my efficiency and productivity. I start at 7 or 8 a.m., work through lunch, and can usually leave between 4-5 p.m.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
RE: Record Turnout At Codingline NY Meeting
From: Ron Freireich, DPM

I read the post regarding the Codingline New York meeting which described the upcoming coding changes as "onerous." I was curious what the actual definition of onerous is. It is the following: difficult and unpleasant to deal with, involving, imposing, constituting a burden, troublesome or oppressive, causing hardship. I'm also curious why medicine (our national associations, MD, DPM, DO, as well as large medical groups and hospitals across the country) are not demanding this to stop until more reasonable and manageable solutions can be implemented. Sound familiar?(Obamacare).

In simple terms, the powers that be, whomever they are, are trying to shove a square into a triangle instead of modifying the square in a reasonable and manageable way to fit in the triangle. I don't know about everyone else, but I feel our profession, that we have all worked long and hard for, is becoming difficult and unpleasant to deal with, involving, imposing, constituting a burden, troublesome, oppressive, and causing hardship because "they" are forcing us to shove a square into a triangle.
