SMU and Oakland Roots SC Launch Pro Athlete Integrated Biomechanics Assessment
Samuel Merritt University (SMU) has announced a new partnership with Oakland Roots SC to assess players’ movement and performance for the club’s full professional roster at SMU’s Motion Analysis Research Center (MARC). Assessments are overseen by SMU faculty from the College of Podiatric Medicine and the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, with supervised participation from advanced podiatry and physical therapy students.

The assessments include gait analysis, lower-extremity biomechanics evaluation, cardiovascular and functional testing, and movement efficiency analysis. The program is designed for education and performance insight and does not involve medical treatment or diagnosis. For Oakland Roots, the initiative supports the club’s commitment to athlete wellness while strengthening ties to the Oakland community.

NY Podiatrist Describes the Benefits of Insoles

While a good pair of shoes can take you far, when you're walking miles upon miles or standing all day, sometimes you need a little something more to keep your feet comfortable and pain-free. That's where insoles come in. “Insoles are absolutely everything for the stability and structure of our feet,” says Brad Schaeffer, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon at Central Park SOLE.

Dr. Brad Schaeffer

“Our feet are our body's natural shock absorbers and stabilizers, so it is very important to get a good shoe/sandal and especially an insole. If you have the appropriate insole, you will feel supported and also feel comfortable throughout your activity and day,” Dr. Schaeffer suggests.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Tips for merging your medical practice without losing your people or patients

Here are some practical tips to help physician owners and administrators plan, close, and integrate the right way.

3) Get contracts out in the open early, because contracts love to ruin your week

Mergers don’t usually get derailed by one big surprise. They get slowed down by a dozen smaller ones, like a lease that needs landlord consent, a vendor agreement that can’t be assigned, or a payer contract that won’t move as cleanly as everyone assumed. The fix is unglamorous but effective: inventory contracts early, and treat them like operational dependencies, not paperwork.

If you need a quick primer on how deal structure affects what transfers (and what doesn’t), start with “Structures of medical practice transactions.” For a more direct “don’t miss this” lens, see “The due diligence of contracts.”

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
10 Things You Need to Practice Medicine That Money Can't Buy

Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:

3. Be Able to Laugh at Yourself

Here’s the thing: we’re all bad at something when we’re new. That’s just part of the process. Just learn to embrace it. Medicine and surgery are serious, high-stakes fields. They demand everything from us. But if you can't find a reason to smile—especially at yourself—then the weight of this work can quickly become overwhelming.

So, give yourself some grace. Lean into the awkwardness. Laugh when you drop everything out of your pocket bending over or when you confidently walk into the wrong OR. The best medicine isn't always in a prescription—sometimes, it’s just a well-timed laugh at your own expense.
