Salon-Induced Infection More Common Than You Think: NY Podiatrist
You may have never given a second thought to the state of the equipment during your nail appointments, but New York-based podiatrist Hillary Brenner, DPM tells Shape that salon-induced infections are "more common than you would think. Throughout my years in practice, I have seen my fair share of skin and nail infections secondary to my patients going to nail salons." She points out a 2017 study from the Journal of Chemical Health and Safety that looked at the potential for health and safety risks among salons in New Jersey with some alarming stats.
|
|
Dr. Hillary Brenner |
"Of the 90 participants in the study, 52 percent reported having dermal (i.e. skin or nail), respiratory, and/or fungal infection symptoms, and they were the most common among people who had been to a salon three times in the past year," according to Dr. Brenner. Researchers noted that — perhaps unsurprisingly — those who visited salons more frequently had "increased occurrence of dermal and fungal symptoms." That means going for regular mani/pedis may up your chances for infection.

10 Ways to Use Medical Practice Funding
Medical practices can use additional funding for a number of purposes. Here are 10 of the most popular uses:
8. Hiring staff
Adding more doctors, medical assistants, and support staff to your team allows you to take on more patients. However, finding talented clinical staff can be challenging for smaller practices without the budget to compete with the pay and benefits of larger organizations.
Funding options:
-
Business lines of credit
-
Merchant cash advances

| REPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A | |
It is with profound sadness to learn about the untimely passing of our very special colleague. There are no superlatives that can adequately describe Don's personal and professional attributes, and his many contributions. Podiatry has lost a unique man, and a guiding beacon to many.
Not so very long ago, Don reached out to ask me to co-author a scientific paper, to report on outcomes of the surgical management for hallux valgus deformity, with the minimally invasive approach. I was honored to be of assistance, and to make a minor contribution. I looked forward with anticipation to continuing our collaboration and to publishing more articles. Alas, this was not to come to fruition.
Rest in peace, dear friend and colleague.
Dieter J. Fellner, DPM, NY, NY

RE: The Passing of Don Thomas Peacock Jr., DPM (Burton Katzen, DPM)
We lost our friend and colleague. Very sad.
Sheldon Nadal, DPM
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Don Peacock. He first joined our AAFAS (now called AMIFAS) in 2013. He had an incredible knowledge of surgery and was very enthusiastic to add MIS to his practice. He was a superstar in our group as he was a leader in our organization, becoming a professor in a short time. When I had a difficult case, he would get back to me almost immediately. He was a frequent writer in PM News and Podiatry Management Magazine, and it was amazing how many articles and books he was familiar with. He frequently lectured to state societies on MIS.
He was involved with music and would send us recordings and entertain us at our meetings. I feel very fortunate to have known him as he was a great friend and had a dramatic effect on my surgical and podiatry practice.

| REPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1C | |
RE: The Passing of Don Thomas Peacock Jr., DPM (Burton Katzen, DPM)
I echo the sentiments of my friend and colleague, Dr. Burton Katzen, honoring Dr. Don Peacock. Don shared his skills and knowledge which advanced minimal incision foot surgery around the world. Always humble and approachable, Don loved sharing and teaching at the Academy of Ambulatory Foot & Ankle Surgery seminars in New Orleans for many years. I’ll always remember the southern rock guitar rifts he played before his lectures (even at 7:30 am after a night out of fun in NoLA).
Don was always available to consult about challenging cases and his guidance over the years helped me successfully care for many of my patients. His YouTube channel shows how MIS techniques are beneficial to so many people. Don, I’m forever grateful for your friendship and mentoring. Love to your family. The angels’ feet are in your skilled hands now.

RE: Changes in Undergraduate Medical Education Over the Past Several Decades
From: Leonard A. Levy, DPM, MPH
I think our profession has reached a point that it now performs its medical and surgical functions absolutely analogous to an ophthalmologist, otolaryngologist, and all the other medical specialists. The time is long overdue for us to have the same license as other physicians (not just parity). We have truly earned this and the public we serve deserves it. This means that we must make a major effort to develop a strong strategic plan to integrate our education and training into medical schools rather than continue to exist in a manner that sort of makes us an appendage to the medical education establishment.
While today there is little difference in podiatric medical education and training from the curriculum of schools of medicine in that mainly, except for deficits in obstetrics...
Editor's note: Dr. Levy's extended-length letter can be read here

RE: Denial for a Separate and Distinct Evaluation and Management (Mark Spier, DPM)
From: Ivar Roth, DPM, MPH
Judging from Dr. Spier’s comments, I must have hit a nerve concerning this issue of trying to bill for every incidental finding during an examination. Dr.Spier opined that I must have gone to my cash practice due to poor reimbursements by the insurance companies. Truth be told, I could easily cheat the patients and the insurance companies for far more money than in my concierge practice. I decided to get off the insurance gravy train because I wanted to treat my patients the way I wanted to treat them and NOT play the insurance games one must play.
In my practice, it is and has always been about quality of care, meaning high quality of care and excellent service. That means doing what is right for the patient and providing the hands-on care without looking at a stop watch. All the hard work and sacrifice that I put into my concierge practice has paid off as I have an unbelievable private practice that grows every day without the worries of having an insurance or government agency looking over my shoulder.
