New Podiatric Medical School to Offer DPM-MD/DPM-PA Degrees
An organizational meeting was held in Chicago on January 23, 2016 regarding the opening of a new podiatric medical college. The meeting was hosted and led by Sev Hrywnak, DPM, MD. In attendance were state senators and representatives, attorneys, members of local hospitals and national medical societies, along with medical education groups and former IPMA presidents. “It’s time to take the next logical step in granting a DPM-MD degree or a DPM-PA degree to allow podiatric physicians full licensure,” stated Dr. Hrywnak, who spearheaded the establishment of the new college. “We cannot move forward in the new healthcare era as podiatrists with a limited license to practice.”
|
|
Dr. Sev Hrywnak |
“To be a part of the integrated healthcare team, podiatry needs full licensure either through an MD Degree or PA Degree,” stated Dr. Stan Blondek, Medical Director of the Physician Assistant Program at Mary Wood University and Chair of Pediatrics and Neonatology. "The team that Dr. Hrywnak has assembled has all the necessities to accomplish this task, including willing colleges in Illinois, political support, academic support and financial support." The new college will have a curriculum designed for entry into the modern healthcare era and will include basic biomedical science lecture through digital media, independent study, and clinical exposure from day one. Rotations will include medicine, surgery, pediatrics, ob-gyn, psychiatry, and emergency medicine. Students will be prepared to take USMLE step 1 and step 2. “All our graduates will be guaranteed a residency due to the relationships we have established with many hospitals in Chicago and the East Coast,” added Hrywnak.

KSUCPM Celebrates 100th Anniversary
Kent State University’s College of Podiatric Medicine is celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout 2016. It is one of nine accredited podiatry colleges in the United States and is a four-year, graduate-level medical college.
|
|
Dr. Allan M. Boike |
Since it was founded in 1916, the college has graduated more than 6,780 podiatrists. “It is astounding to view the evolution of the profession beginning with only 14 students — to having more than 100 graduates each year,” Dean Allan Boike, DPM said in a prepared statement. “From its humble, yet noble beginnings, to becoming a leader in foot and ankle healthcare, the college has maintained one goal: to produce the finest providers of foot and ankle care in the world.”

Canadian Podiatrist Questions Online Rating Website RateMDs
A Winnipeg podiatrist is warning the public that physicians can pay to manage information on RateMDs, a website that allows patients to review and rate physicians anonymously. Last month, a sales consultant approached Dr. Martin Colledge from the Foot and Ankle Clinic about RateMDs' promoted plans.
|
|
Dr. Martin Colledge |
Colledge was offered three different plans — free, promoted for $179 U.S. per month and promoted plus for $359 U.S. per month. Each plan came with its own features, such as hiding up to three ratings deemed to be suspicious, removing competitors' banners from a physician's profile and getting a physician's banner on other profiles, Colledge said. "This company gathers and then controls the information, and the way they make money for it is by charging people the privilege of then manipulating that information, presumably to their advantage, because it's a marketing ploy," said Colledge.

Scientists Examine Use Of Bacteriophages to Fight Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria
Bacteriophages, little-used for decades in the U.S. and much of Europe, are gaining new attention because of resistance to antibiotics. Doctors in the U.S. and much of Europe stopped using phages to fight bacteria when penicillin and other antibiotics were introduced in the 1940s. Now, though, Western scientists are turning back to this Stalin-era cure to help curb the dramatic growth of bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
That resistance has become one of the biggest healthcare crises of our time, and public-health experts are desperate for new bacteria-fighting weapons, even old ones like phages. “We are at risk of losing the race here,” says Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This has the potential to undermine much of modern medicine.”

How to Increase Patient Access to Health Data
There’s a debate raging in healthcare about whether patients should have control over their own health data. It’s the kind of transformational discussion upon which the future of medicine depends. In a new perspective article published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Mandl and Kohane make four recommendations to foster the creation of what they envision as a patient-driven health information economy:
-
Formalization of strong incentives from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and private insurers for healthcare organizations to provide data to patients.
-
Development, backed by federal healthcare IT policy and demand from purchasers of health systems, of uniform, standard public application programming interfaces (APIs) to catalyze the development of an ecosystem of health data apps for providers and patients.
-
Creation of tools by which patients can set permissions and consents for who can access their health data and for what purposes.
-
Adoption of rigorous authentication frameworks akin to those in the e-commerce industry to provide data security and accountability.

Query: Best Type of Osteotomy on the Proximal Phalanx?
This is a 30 y/o healthy female who has longstanding bilateral 1st/5th MPJ pain and wants a bunion correction of both symptomatic joints involved. She is quite active and her job requires working on her feet 8-10 hours a day. She understands the disability and recovery involved in a bunion correction. After exhausting non-surgical remedies and failure of providing symptom relief of these structural deformities, I will perform surgery on each foot in a separate operative setting.
|
|
Pre-op X-rays |
I am concerned about the short proximal phalanx of both great toes. I am considering a double osteotomy (Akin-Austin) on both great toes and a Lapidus fusion of the left 1st met-cunieform joint due to the high IM. I will perform a 5th metatarsal osteotomy of both 5th metatarsals as well to correct the Tailor's bunion. I was considering reducing the length of the 2nd metatarsal for biomechanical reasons to accommodate for the surgical shortening of the 1st ray when the HAV correction procedure is performed on the involved foot. Should I instead try to lengthen the proximal phalanx of the great toe with an opening wedge type osteotomy on the lateral side of the phalanx using a bone graft with fixation?

RE: To Strike or Not to Strike?
From: Marc B. Klein, DPM
After seeing the most recent poll about whether physicians should strike or not, it hit a nerve about what I have been thinking about for quite a few years now. The insurance companies have basically taken over the entire direction and management of medical practice.
Our state and national associations, and I don't only mean podiatric but the AMA also, have basically ignored this trend. Every time I would bring this subject up to "the powers that be”, they would say that it's collusion and it's against the law and you can be put in jail for that.
The APMA does a tremendous job in protecting our specialty when dealing with insurance companies regarding being a part of various health programs, but...

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2 | |
From: Alireza Khosroabadi, DPM
I disagree with Dr. Dan Klein. I think if you think that you need an MD or DO after your name to get respect or become successful, then that is what you believe in and that is what you will get. I can only talk about my own success. I have heard all of that while in residency and fellowship. It was very disappointing to hear that from a lot of attendings (not all) but fortunately, I decided not to listen to the chatter.
I have been in practice for eight years and have been extremely successful. I turned one office to two and am building my third location, plus my own surgery center. I have been invited to The Doctors TV Show five times, and they have never asked me or even mentioned why I have a DPM after my name. They even...
