New York’s Clinical Conference Another Broadway Smash Hit
The Foundation for Podiatric Medicine's annual clinical conference, Step It Up, was by all accounts an outstanding success. Held from January 23th through the 25th, a near record 1,422 foot specialists and other medical professionals from over 40 states and 5 foreign countries attended the multi-tiered event held in the heart of The Big Apple. The Foundation is the educational, scientific, and research arm of the New York State Podiatric Medical Association (NYSPMA) and represents more than 1,200 doctors.
|
|
(L-R) Conference Committee: Drs. Paul Liswood, Charles Lombardi, Anthony Espositio, Daniel Keating, William Spielfogel (Chair), Eric Walter, James Hanna, Mr. Michael Borden, Drs. Joseph Sciandra, and Robert Russo. |
Educational seminars, hands-on workshops, lectures, and special events are the hallmarks of this important educational tradition. Topics ranged from chronic pain, hallux valgus, sports medicine, and diabetic wound care to in-office vascular testing, radiology, and practice management. 191 students from colleges of podiatric medicine attended the second annual 2-day student program.

IA Podiatrist Enjoys IA, Despite the Cold
Dr. Adam Nichols recently relocated from Dallas, TX to Sioux Falls, IA. "I was determined to get back to a smaller city with lots of outdoor recreation. I wanted a place where my kids could grow up outside like I did and not surrounded by cars, concrete, and smog. Thankfully, God saw us to Sioux Falls, and we couldn't be happier (I even like the cold; it makes for an awesome jog)."

While he is not longer in Texas where he completed his residency, he intends to stay connected. "The Texas Podiatric Medical Foundation sponsors a medical mission to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico every year; I have been, and intend to remain active, in that endeavor. It is an incredibly rewarding experience," says Nichols .

GA Podiatrist Discusses High Heels and Pregnancy
Dr. Vivian Iwu of Choice Podiatry Center in Cumming, Georgia, explains how heels interfere with normal foot placement while walking. “The way we walk, your heel is supposed to strike the ground first, then you walk forward. Your big toe pushes you off the ground, but when you’re walking tippy-toe, you’re not allowing your heel to strike the ground. So you are walking in an inclined position [and] what it does is shorten your Achilles tendons.” Most pregnant women already have difficulty walking because of the extra weight they are carrying and the swelling on their feet. The unnatural incline at which you walk in heels, paired with the extra weight of pregnancy, can cause overpronation.
|
|
Dr. Vivian Iwu |
Overpronation occurs when the middle arch collapses and the heel shifts outward, leading to a variety of other problems, including plantar fasciitis. Dr. Iwu says that plantar fasciitis is one of the main causes of heel pain in pregnant women and can occur as a result of weight gain causing pressure on the foot. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue, becomes inflamed. The pain often lessens when the feet are in motion, but it can return after long periods of time.

| SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS | |
Bret Ribotsky: If you could share a valuable tip from your time as a forensic podiatrist to those in general practice, what would it be?
|
|
Dr. Bryan Kagan |
Bryan Kagan: I would tell them all to look at your patients' shoes. You will learn a tremendous amount of information from noticing how insoles conform, and how your patients are functioning in their day-to-day gait. Sometimes, you might even find the etiology of the problems. Once, I found nylon knee high socks inside of a patient's shoes and determined that this was the reason for the painful contracted toe.

Meet the Masters airs live every Tuesday night. This week's guest will be diabetes specialist Dr. David Armstrong. You can register for this and future events by clicking here

7 Ways Docs Can Attract Patients on Facebook - Part 5
5. Pay attention to the potential audience meter.
As you put targeting conditions in place and zero in on your specific audience, Facebook will generate an estimated number of people you'll reach with the ad. This is only an approximate number, but it can assist you in making sure you're not targeting too many people (or too few). Ads perform best when they're targeted to at least a few thousand people, so consider removing some restrictions if your audience is dropping below this.

RE: The Passing of Arthur Wolstein, DPM
From: Lewis Wolstein, DPM
|
|
Dr. Arthur Wolstein |
It is with sadness that we report the death of Dr. Arthur Wolstein. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 100 on January 18th. He died in his home of 62 years in New Rochelle. His accomplishments and contributions to his profession and the community are too numerous to mention. He was a decorated World War II veteran. He opened his practice in Parkchester in the Bronx in 1937 and a second office in Co-Op City in 1969, which his two sons Lewis and Peter operate today. His wife of 70 years, Diane, died 4 1/2 months ago at the age of 94. He is survived by his children Lewis, Deborah, Peter, and Marianne. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1 | |
From: Barry Mullen, DPM
The association of gout and Parkinson's disease was first reported in 1972- check out Honda's article in JAMA 1972- Also see Schlesinger- Uric acid in PD - Movement Disorder '08.
Apparently, uric acid's antioxidant properties have led to studies demonstrating an inverse relationship exists between PD progression and oxygen tension. As such, some clinicians have utilized high purine diets to help manage PD. I would check to see if this is true in your patient. This association is seemingly quite rare and certainly worth reporting for our literature.
Barry Mullen, DPM, Hackettstown, NJ

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)- PART 1A | |
From: William F Hughes, DPM
I have found myself in a very similar situation having been in practice for nearly 31 years and and in my early 60s. For the past few years, I have been collecting real estate, both residential and commercial, that I will eventually manage for my income in the future. I will have accumulated enough that by 2017, I will be able to step away from my practice, if I choose to. I have found this necessary because of all the headaches related to the business of medicine. The only other reasonable option was to belong to a group, which after 31 years of being my own boss, would not be very desirable. The practice of podiatry has served my family and myself well, but it's time to move on.
William F Hughes, DPM, Council Bluffs, IA

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B | |
From: Greg Amarantos, DPM
You are 58 years old and have a successful practice; you GET IT. You have successfully navigated the changes in our healthcare system, from fee for service, DRGs, HMOs with capitation, PPOs and going forward, ACOs and ACEs. Unless you have the temperament for a paradigm shift in the way you practice, you should keep it simple with low overhead.
You know your demographic mix and your patients see you because of your skill set. I assume you have some type of EMR and digital radiography, sending the message to your patients that you...

RE: Celebrity Shoe of the Day

| Autographed Shaquille O'Neal's rookie shoe, size 20 |
Here's a a pair of autographed Shaquille O'Neal's rookie shoes, size 20. It appears that his foot grew from his rookie year to an eventual size 23 at the end of his career. When I take shoes to schools or the children's hospital, the children (and even adults) are most intrigued by this particular shoe because of the sheer enormity of it.
