MEETING NEWS

New York Clinical Conference Exhibitors Honor the Memory of SuEllen Dercher

Yesterday exhibors and attendees of the New York Clinical Conference gathered at the McClain Booth to honor the memory of longtime exhibitor Suellen Dercher of Gordon Labs by unofficially naming the exhibit hall after her. This tribute was organized by Kim Ratighan of McClain Labs and Stu Wittner of Orthofeet. Stu is recovering from surgery and was unable to attend.

Attendees at SuEllen Dercher Exhibit Hall Naming

Those gathered recalled their experiences with SuEllen and how she positively impacted podiatry. Barry Block, DPM noted that SuEllen was the first advertiser in Podiatry Management Magazine and that Gordon Labs held the inside cover position for over 40 years.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Tips for merging your medical practice without losing your people or patients

Here are some practical tips to help physician owners and administrators plan, close, and integrate the right way.

2) Do due diligence like you’re moving in together, not just buying a business.

Yes, you need the financials. But what tends to blindside practices is the day-to-day reality: how scheduling actually works, how referrals truly flow, how many claims get stuck in denial purgatory, and which “one person” is quietly keeping the whole operation from wobbling. Think of diligence as learning how the other practice functions under stress—because that’s exactly what a merger creates. Two pieces worth revisiting before you start building your diligence checklist are “Does due diligence matter?” and “Avoid these practice mergers traps.”

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
What Is a Good Inheritance? Six Great Assets to Inherit

Leaving a good inheritance takes planning. If you want to help your heirs, these are the best assets to leave them.

6. Assets in a trust fund

This final suggestion is less about the type of asset you may leave and more about the way you leave that asset —in a trust fund, versus leaving the property directly to your heirs. A trust fund can help protect the inheritance of your loved ones. “If you leave property to your heirs outright, it’s subject to the claims of their creditors and predators,” said Neil Carbone, trusts and estates partner at Farrell Fritz, with predators being other people who might seek to have your family members part with their inheritance, such as a spouse who has plans on how to spend that money or who files for divorce soon after the inheritance is received and commingled with marital assets.

A trust fund can also protect your loved ones from themselves. If you worry they might spend the money too quickly, you could set up a trust that limits how much goes out over time, including passing on wealth between generations, like first payments go to your kids and then continue to your grandchildren.

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
10 Things You Need to Practice Medicine That Money Can't Buy

Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:

2.  People You Love

Make time for the people you love whenever you can. Even when you’re tired, answer the call from your cousin who wants to tell you about her college applications and high school drama. Call your parents just to say you love them. Show up for date night—and put your phone away. Work will always be there. People might not.

At the same time, understand that this job demands a lot. Sometimes your phone must stay on ring for the hospital. Sometimes you’ll be late or miss things because you're still in the OR or staying after clinic to learn something new. It’s never because you don’t care—it’s because you care deeply about becoming the best you can be.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A

Podiatry has lost one of its greatest doctors. Dr. John Bergmann and his orthotic laboratory and its innovations will be greatly missed. He was an old friend for many of us that are still around. My condolences to his family and may his energies in orthopedic footwear and orthotics be a continued direction for orthotics and its continued success in treatment.

Steven J Berlin, DPM

I first met John when he was about 5 or 6 years old when I was in high school and worked a summer job for his father Dr. Carl Bergman in his laboratory in Chicago at 1327 North Clark Street. His father was responsible for encouraging me to follow a career in podiatry. To this day, I have only fond memories of those times and am still enjoying pursuing my professional career.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B

It was with great sadness that I learned of his passing. He was a second-generation podiatrist who loved the profession. At great cost to his lab, he developed the first office-based optical scanner for podiatrists. In 1989, I purchased the 9th machine (in the world) from him for the price of a new car. I flew to Chicago and spent several days with him. He was a most pleasant gentleman.

It was a great machine and accurate. Years ahead of its time! Still, having been trained in California, I was very good with plaster and I was not using the machine much. He called me and said he saw that I was not using the technology much and offered to buy back the machine without me even asking him. The profession will miss him.

Jack Reingold, DPM

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1C

I recognize that I am advancing in age when my friends depart this world and leave behind their loved ones. John Bergmann was a biomechanical prodigy and a devoted family man. I have utilized his laboratory for 43 years, with returns less than 1% for adjustments. His demeanor and guidance enabled the production of a wide range of orthotics. His family business will continue to thrive with the expertise imparted by his father and the tutelage provided to his children.

Nancy, his wife who collaborated with him, will remain to oversee this remarkable podiatric company. Having dedicated countless weekends to fulfilling prescriptions, he is now in a position to finally relax and witness the next generation’s achievements. It was an honor and a privilege to know him as a person and a friend.
