OBITUARIES

Benjamin Kauth, DPM - Pioneer in Podiatric Literature

It is with great sadness that PM News reports the death of Benjamin Kauth, DPM at age 95. Kauth’s contributions to podiatry are legendary. He was the first podiatrist to write a book (Walk and Be Happy) for the lay public, and was a co-founder of the American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA). He was the recipient of NYSPMA's Pioneer in Podiatry Award as well as the coveted APMWA Golden Quill Award.

Dr. Benjamin Kauth

Kauth also served for many decades as a Trustee at NYCPM and Delegate to NYSPMA. Kauth, a life member of NY's famed Friar's Club, once shared friendships with show business legends such as Ed Sullivan and Frank Sinatra.

The Tie-Less shoes enable patients that have difficulties tying laces to finally wear Tie shoes. What’s more - they are less expensive than the other shoes that I bought before. My patients love the shoes, an even I like to wear them too - they are the best shoes I have ever worn!”

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters.

Bret Ribotsky: What has been your experience with employing physical therapists in your practice?

Dr. David Novicki

David Novicki: It is a tremendously worthwhile venture. First of all, you get a very high return in terms of rehabilitation of your traumatized patients or your post-op patients. PTs, who work on the foot and ankle only, really become extremely specialized and do a tremendous job, so we get people better quicker. From a financial standpoint, it is also very good. The real rub in terms of setting up a PT business is that it is hard to get physical therapists. If we could find another one right now, I would hire him or her, right on the spot.

Dr. Jon Hultman

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday Night at 9 PM (EST). This week's show features Jon Hultman, DPM, MBA, Executive Director of the California Podiatric Medical Association and PM Podiatry Hall of Fame Inductee. You can register for this event  by clicking here

QUERIES - (CLINICAL)

Query: Non-Specific Fibrosis

I have a 68 y/o overweight black female with 2 year history of relative asymptomatic, pedunculated skin of the bilateral lower legs, sparing the feet. The patient has  2+ non-pitting chronic lymphedema, otherwise PMH is non-contributory, All labs, including CMP, CBC, and thyroid were WNL.

Non-Specific Fibrosis

A biopsy revealed non-specific fibrosis. Numerous creams and compression have been utilized with minimal/no improvement. A dermatology consult was not helpful. Any thoughts on a curative treatment?

Mark Tracy, DPM, Port Charlotte, FL

QUERIES - (NON-CLINICAL)

Query: Five Finger Shoes

Has anyone had any experience with "Five Finger Shoes"?

RE: Physician Executive MBA Programs (Sloan Gordon, DPM)
From: Nicholas Sol, DPM, MBA, Ivar Roth, DPM

I completed my MBA degree in Health Administration at the University of Colorado - Denver. My class in the Executive MBA program included physicians (MD, DO, DPM, DDS), nurses, insurance executives, pharmaceutical executives, hospital administrators, etc. This link will take you to their site for more information: colorado.edu/execed/hmba/.

While the curriculum was challenging, the volume of work was less than I remember from OCPM. The knowledge and paradigm shift in thinking is definitely worthwhile. I'm running my practice with greater efficiency and efficacy. The increased income has eclipsed the cost of tuition....therefore, it was both educational and profitable.

Nicholas Sol, DPM, MBA, Colorado Springs, CO, drsol@thewalkingclinic.com

The University of Irvine in California has such a program, and I am aware of at least one podiatrist who graduated from there.

RE: Dropping out of HMO's, PPO's, and Medicare (Steve Goldstein, DPM)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Dr. Goldstein reports that before he retired, he stopped participating in HMO's, PPO's, and Medicare. The increased revenue he made from his loyal patients more than made up for any losses. It would be interesting to note if others have been bold and tried the same thing. I imagine there are many factors involved, such as the economics of the community one is practicing in, the degree of patient loyalty, etc.

Dr. Goldstein's outcome might have been different had he been in the first five years of his practice and located in a lower middle income community. A popular internist in my geographic area opted out of all HMO's and did not participate in Medicare. He ultimately had to leave his practice.  Dr. Goldstein, however, brings up a good point, and it would be very interesting to see if other readers have tried it and had similar positive experiences.

RE: Mark M. Levine, DPM
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Mark Levine. Dr. Levine was an attending of mine while I was a first year resident. We kept in touch throughout the years. I was unaware that he had fallen ill until very recently.

Two things I'd like to share about Dr. Levine. 1) He hated the way insurance companies took advantage of us, and constantly spoke of ways we needed to fight back. 2) For the past few years, he rode in a charitable bicycle tour in Israel. Before he set out, he posted a message in PM News in case people wanted to donate, and that's what people did. Fellow pods stepped up and donated. Dr. Levine appreciated this. He thought it was cool that podiatrists throughout the country donated, even though they didn't know him. I want to thank, on his behalf, those who did. A good man was lost at too early an age. I wish his family the best, and may G-d rest his soul.
