PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Sheridan Orthopaedic Associates Welcomes WY Podiatrist

Sheridan Orthopaedic Associates recently welcomed Daniel L. Peterson, DPM, FACFAS, to the team. Dr. Peterson earned his podiatric degree from the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Ohio. This was followed by a three-year residency at Detroit Medical Center in Michigan.

Dr. Daniel Peterson

Dr. Peterson continued to advance his training by completing a one-year fellowship at North Jersey Reconstructive Foot and Ankle in New Jersey and then practiced in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for four years. He is board certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

PODIATRIC TRAGEDIES IN THE NEWS
2 Women Found Dead In Same Firefighter’s Home Years Apart

Missouri podiatrist Sarah Sweeney, DPM, 39, is the second woman to die in the same St. Louis-area firefighter's home in the past three years. Dr. Sweeney  had recently opened up her own practice in St. Louis, according to Fox News Digital. Sweeney was the fiancee of the man whose home she was discovered dead in, and her death is now under investigation.

Dr. Sarah Sweeney

The authorities discovered Sweeney's body at 6:39 a.m. on January 13. She did not have any "apparent signs of trauma," according to the Frontenac police. Sweeney's body was initially found by her fiance, local fire captain Robert Daus, according to Sweeney's mother, Teresa Sweeney. While Sweeney was getting her own practice set up, she met Daus while working an emergency room shift.

IN THE COURTS
PA Podiatrist Tenders His $1M Med Mal Policy After Lying About Credentials

It only took one day of trial and one witness for defendants in a Lehigh County medical malpractice suit to settle with plaintiffs for their $1 million policy limit. According to the plaintiff’s lawyer, counsel for defendant Dr. Brad Lilly agreed to resolve the suit the morning after the plaintiffs made a dramatic reveal: Lilly had lied about his credentials.

Lilly had represented on his website and CV that he was a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). When ACFAS was contacted, they confirmed that Lilly had not been involved with the organization since he was a student member and never became a fellow.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Patient Self-Scheduling: Ways to Get Your Providers On Board

Follow these  steps, and see how you too can improve scheduling accuracy, reduce staff intervention and most importantly, meet physician and patient demands.

4B. Design with Patients in Mind

It’s simple, patients want ease, convenience, and confirmation.

Convenience: Have you ever calculated your call abandonment rate to see how many patients you’re losing by not offering online booking? Patients want to make appointments while they’re top-of-mind, which means anywhere, anytime, 24/7.

Confirmation: There’s a clear difference between requesting an appointment and actually confirming an appointment. When patients go to book, they don’t want to wait and see if their appointment request is approved. The confirmation element is often a missing piece in self-scheduling solutions that can lead to angry patients.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Let's Pay Attention to Podiatric Value-Based Care
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM

In the last issue of APMA News, a featured article advised us to pay attention to value-based care (VBC) for our own benefit as well as the future benefit of our profession. This is great advice.

Strict attention to provision of quality lower extremity healthcare has always been a very valuable practice asset. Now, as medical services are being hyper-scrutinized by health insurance payers, VBC is quickly becoming a practice growth necessity.

The problem is that very few DPMs are paying much attention to the importance of VBC in this post-Covid-19 quickly changing healthcare marketplace. But those podiatrists who do understand the significance of this transition and are acting accordingly will certainly be rewarded.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2
RE: Foot Care for Medicare Hospice Patients
From: Cary Wolf, DPM

I need help or advice on resolving an issue regarding the inability to service Medicare hospice patients in my house call practice. I work on a referral basis with hospice facilities, hospitals, and home care agencies. I and some of my colleagues received a competitive billing report from CBR Pepper Team on behalf of Medicare regarding submitting claims for foot care for hospice patients.

Medicare is discouraging us from treating hospice patients enrolled in the Medicare hospice program. They have instituted limits on the total number of patients we can treat, the amount of income generated from servicing these patients because they are in hospice. Medicare insists that the foot care provided to our patients be medically necessary and this applies for hospice patients seen at home and in adult foster care homes. These hospice patients have trouble walking or are bedbound in addition to being affected by their medical problems.

The hospice Medicare patients we see at home require this care and it is a medical necessity. The patients and family members are angry that their care has been halted. Politicians, AARP, and local and national podiatry associations have been contacted and are unable to assist.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 3
RE: New PSSD Diagnostic Device
From: Robert S. Mullin, DPM

I’m wondering how many of you were invited to train at Johns Hopkins with Lee Dellon, MD, a neurosurgeon and plastic surgeon? He was featured on Good Morning America, and has written over 450 peer-reviewed medical and surgical articles both in the U.S. and internationally. Stephen Barrett, DPM worked with Dr. Dellon to market this breakthrough new PSSD diagnostic device that detects peripheral neuropathy, claiming 50 percent more sensitivity as compared to the gold standard of the EMG which was invented in 1933. Most importantly, EMG misses 50% of all peripheral neuropathy, because the nerves in the lower leg and foot are much smaller in diameter. The PSSD neurosensory diagnostic device costs $65,000 with a $5,000 mandatory training session in Baltimore with Dr. Dellon.

After purchasing the advanced peripheral neuropathy diagnostic device, the next step is to come back and train with Dr. Dellon in surgery and be taught a very specific surgical technique that can reverse diabetic neuropathy that is caused by a double crush syndrome.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 4
From: Jeff Root

In response to Dr. Teitelbaum’s question about foot scanning for Android users, our advice to clients who don’t own iPhones and who want to scan feet with a mobile phone is to purchase a refurbished iPhone with facial recognition technology for about $200, connect it to your Wi-Fi network, and use it as a dedicated foot scanner. You don’t need to pay any cellular provider fees, and after the initial purchase, there are no other costs in order to have this tool available to you.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) - PART 1
From: Robert Spalding, DPM

As much as I like the fact I was mentioned in PM News and appreciate their vast contribution to podiatry, I emphatically wish to mention that I have been grossly misquoted in this article reprinted by PM News. I have NEVER promoted Barbicide or any QAC since publishing my original book, Death By Pedicure in 2006. I do not promote any salon or podiatry practice that uses any quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) like the falsely podiatry marketed Benzal disinfectant that brought negative attention to many fines, health violations, and warnings to New Jersey podiatrists in 2016-2017.

That serious issue involved promoting and false marketing of QACs like Benzal as true liquid sterilants, i.e. glutaraldehyde which is another product that falls short of simple 30-minute autoclaving of all routine foot care instruments. Podiatrists should remember their basic microbiology and realize...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) - PART 2
From: Jeff Root

I appreciate the points presented by Drs. Stess, Steinberg, and Radovic. Unfortunately, I’m not aware of any reliable, scientific method for comparing the contour of slipper casts to that of direct foot scans. I’m also not aware of any good outcome studies that support one method over the other clinically. In the lab, we have made orthoses of the same subject using multiple techniques and then we compare the shape of the finished orthotic shells to the positive models produced using other techniques. This is the only way I’m aware of to compare the contours of orthoses made from a fully manual process (slipper cast to corrected, positive plaster cast), a partially manual process (a scanned slipper cast to computer generated positive wood mold), and a  fully digital process (direct foot scan to a computer generated...
