AT THE COLLEGES |
CLEAR-ANKLE Holds Post-Summer Research Progress Symposium
Recently, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS) hosted the 2013 CLEAR-ANKLE Summer Research Symposium attended by faculty, staff, and students. This past summer, while receiving support from Center for Lower Extremity Ambulatory Research (CLEAR) faculty and RFUMS research centers, students from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine worked as NIH-funded research trainees on novel research.

The keynote speaker, John Grady, DPM from the Veterans Administration Chicago Healthcare Westside Division, spoke highly of the caliber of research in which Scholl College students are participating at CLEAR.

PODIATRISTS AND DIABETES |
OH Podiatrist Provides Cold Weather Tips for Diabetics
Cold winters can be a challenge for all of us who want to stay active. For people who have diabetes mellitus, facing the elements can be especially challenging and should be approached with caution. Georgeanne Botek, DPM, Medical Director of Cleveland Clinic’s diabetic foot clinic suggests the following tips to keep feet healthy:
|
Dr. Georgeanne Botek |
*Our skin tends to get dry in the winter, which can lead to cracked skin. Be sure to keep your feet moisturized by applying good skin lotion, but be careful not to leave any between your toes.
*Protect your feet from extreme temperatures (cold or hot) by wearing socks that fit well and have soft elastic at the top. When active, consider wicking socks that will keep the moisture away.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL) |
Query: Elimination of RFC Patients
My schedule has become inundated with poor-paying covered routine foot care (RFC) patients. Some of those nail trims do occasionally come in with other complaints, sometimes requiring a DME item, wound care, or other services. However, I might have more than 20 RFC patients scheduled in one day and then have trouble scheduling a heel pain or other better-paying service until three weeks later, so the patient just calls another podiatrist. I'm also at the point in life where I'd like to take a day off a week. Is it possible to do away with offering RFC altogether? Will this be podiatric suicide?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) |
RE: Meaningful Use for 2014 (Jay Goldstein, DPM, MS)
From: Mark J. Tuccio, DPM
We couldn't agree more with Dr. Goldstein . We too have gone through MU attestation for 2011, 2012, and recently attested to MU 2013. We survived an MU audit for 2011. After attending a webinar hosted by our EMR vendor this past week on MU stage II, there is really no way we could justify the time and staff commitment needed to make the grade.
Meeting the new requirements, staff time, changes in work flow, portal fees, etc. far outweigh the paltry $3,900. Unless there is a penalty for having EMR certified stage II software and NOT using it in a meaningful way, there is no way we will attempt this.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON- CLINICAL) |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
We would be in a complete state of denial if we claim that many medical specialists don't abuse the system by ordering high paying tests and performing high paying procedures when lesser expensive options are often available. In some cases, however, the patients are partly to blame. This past summer, a patient presented with a large discolored lesion on the dorsum of her left foot. I did punch biopsies in two locations. The pathologists at Bako Laboratory diagnosed it as a squamous cell carcinoma and recommended a wide excision.
The patient, however, opted to go to a Mohs surgeon on her own even though Mohs is mainly used to remove facial neoplasms so as to limit facial post-operative deformity. The outcome would have been the same had I excised the lesion, but she opted for a much more expensive procedure which ultimately was paid for by her insurance company, which in turn will raise premiums based on this and many similar cases.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1A |
From: Joe Agostinelli, DPM
I do agree with not solely supporting a DPM just because the candidate is a DPM. I do admire Dr. Rogers for throwing his hat in the ring as Dr. Westrup has. It takes a lot of courage and monetary resources to run for congressional office. First term congressional representatives usually have to follow whatever their caucus leader wants them to do as far as voting; or they never get placed on good committees, or are ever heard from.
The APMA should be cautious where they place their monetary resources endorsing candidates. That's why I give my donations to APMA for mostly educational purposes rather than for political contributions. I really do not want to give money to candidates who do not reflect most of my political views, regardless of the education or profession they are in. As we know, "all politics are local " for congressional candidates.
I have no idea of the demographics of the congressional seat Dr. Rogers is running for. He has to win 50 percent plus 1 to win his election. The political views of those constituents, not of the DPMs throughout the country, will decide whether Dr. Rogers wins his election. I personally do not think kindly of outside interests groups just giving money because of the club or union someone belongs in. All that being said, Dr. Rogers has a lot of guts to enter a political campaign, and I wish him luck! I just wish he was running as an independent or Republican! (LOL)

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)- PART 1B |
From: David A. Pougatsch, DPM
I must disclose that I was Lee Rogers’s fellow a year ago, and I am now his partner at the Amputation Prevention Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital in Los Angeles. I am writing this on my own volition. That being said, I will try to address some things written in Dr. Silhanek’s letter:
PM News attempts to deliver up-to-date information about podiatrists from podiatrists around the country, be it in politics, academics, charity, the media, or even the criminal justice system. Similar to Dr. Wenstrup’s campaign success, Dr. Rogers’ campaign is...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 2 |
From: Joel A Feder, DPM
Now that ABPS has decided to change its name, we will all have to go through the expense of replacing signage, stationery, and other printed office forms. And they have decided to charge us for new certificates. I think that for all the annual dues and re-examination fees that they charge, they should replace the name change certificates as a membership courtesy. Does anyone else out there agree with me?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 |
RE: The Passing of Jim Stewart, DPM
I wanted to pass along to all of his classmates and those who may have known him that Jim Stewart, DPM died this week. He practiced in Sudbury, Ontario for 41 years and was affectionately known as "Dr. Stewart" by everyone. He was a kind gentle man who enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and fishing. He was known for his expertise and knowledge of wine. Originally from Toledo, a graduate of case Western Reserve University and OCPM, he was a great asset to all of Northern Ontario and the patients he served. He loved podiatry and worked to the end.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)- PART 2 |
Dr. Martin Mussman was a gentle giant in our profession. As a student national leader in the early '80s, I had many occasions to work with Dr. Mussman. He was always available to assist and encourage students, serving as a stellar role model for our young leaders. He was so easy to approach. As busy as he was, he made it clear that he always had time to provide advice and assist students. His wisdom was practical, yet so insightful. He put a bright light on podiatry in the Department of Veterans Affairs, setting the stage to elevate podiatry even further for Dr. Jeffrey Robbins who was his successor. Dr. Robbins was one of our favorite instructors at OCPM, and I could not think of a better individual to fill Dr. Mussman’s shoes.
