NC Podiatrist Receives the Edwin B. Martin, Jr. Award

On January 18, 2025, Jane Andersen, DPM was presented with the Edwin B. Martin, Jr. Award acknowledging her as the Podiatrist of the Year. Dr. Andersen was recognized for her continued commitment to student mentorship and recruitment, her dedication to her profession, and her history of service to the North Carolina Foot & Ankle Society.

(L-R) Drs. Dekarlos Dial, Jane Andersen, and James Judge

The North Carolina Podiatrist of the Year Award has been awarded to deserving podiatric physicians since the early 1980’s. In 1987, following the untimely death of Dr. Martin, the award was changed to bear his name. Dr. Andersen practices in Chapel Hill with her husband, Alan Bocko, DPM. The award was presented by James Judge, DPM, and Dekarlos Dial, DPM, previous award recipients.

Compression Socks Provide ‘Much Needed’ Foot Pain Relief: TX Podiatrist

Being on your feet can feel tiring, uncomfortable, and sometimes even painful after a while. Even with the right shoes, standing for long periods can still take a toll on your feet. That said, it’s never a bad idea to take the extra effort to manage your foot pain. Compression socks are a recovery tool that is beneficial for anyone who’s always on their feet.

Dr. Chanel Perkins

According to Chanel Houston Perkins, DPM, standing or walking for long periods can cause swelling in lower limbs. As a result, it creates a “heaviness in the muscles, tightness in the skin, and irritation on the nerves,” explained Dr. Perkins in a previous Shape interview. However, the pressure from compression socks improves blood flow, preventing “pooling” (aka, the build-up of fluid) in the legs that causes such discomfort.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
10 Small Ways to Provide Great Customer Service to Patients

Providing great customer service to patients will make them feel like you are all on the same team, they will be more apt to send referrals, and they will be more willing to make sure you are paid for the time and effort you have spent on their care. Here are 10 ways to provide excellent service to your patients outside of the exam room:

1. Make sure each of your employees is capable of making a good first impression.

This is even more important for the “front-of-house” employees responsible for greeting the patients over the phone or on their arrival in the waiting room. (Tip: Hire people with a history of helping people.)

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION) - PART 1 A
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

Dr. Gottlieb gives a good explanation of why longer residencies are needed in terms of funding, but I thought he fell short on his last sentence. A non-surgical resident can be trained to do so more than “chipping and clipping”. Podiatrists can be trained much better in the “podiatric medicine arena”, whereby no one has to be afraid to treat podiatric conditions with broader systemic concerns. For example, many podiatrists might make a diagnosis of gout but then return the patient to the internist or rheumatologist to treat the gout. A well-rounded and trained podiatrist could/should be trained to treat this, as some currently do. Gout is just one example.

The scope of podiatry needs to be expanded and, in my mind, needs to be the same in every state. I think it is silly to force everyone into 3-year surgical programs when not everyone wants to do surgery or is not adept at doing it.

Jeffrey Kass, DPM, Forest Hills, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC EDUCATION) - PART 1 B
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM

I disagree with Dr. Spinner. Some state legislatures (for example, the NYS legislature) feel we are a specialty with only recognition of being board certified in surgery. When the NYS ankle law was discussed in 2012, there was no mention of the antitrust effects on members of the ABPM, prohibiting medical treatment of the ankle. Board certification in podiatric medicine is not recognized to “medically" treat the ankle. Yet board certification in surgery is required to medically treat the ankle, in the absence of a chronic foot ulcer.

If the written minutes or discussions of the New York State legislature had no mention of the anti-competitive effects on podiatrists who are board certified in podiatric medicine, this 2012 ankle law might be able to be rendered null and void as anticompetitive and not in compliance with federal legislation that prohibits antitrust activity. Scope might be increased to allow podiatrists board certified in podiatric medicine to medically treat the ankle.

Can state societies take political action to correct what might be classified as a possible restraint of trade against podiatrists only board certified in podiatric medicine? Do any members of ABPM have similar opinions? Did any state society ever contact the U.S. Dept of Justice and/or the Federal Trade Commission for their opinions on how to recognize the value of being board certified in podiatric medicine, and if not, why not? Problems like this might be a possible reason why there is such low enrollment in our podiatric medical colleges.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: John Clyde, DPM

Case in point is on the APMA Career Center.  Three of the five featured podiatry job postings are for nurse practitioners, and the one with a published salary is higher than most of the published data on average podiatrist salaries.

APMA Featured Jobs

Why take on all of the podiatry school debt and the massive responsibilities/liabilities of being a surgeon when you can work while getting your advanced degree, and then step into whatever specialty you want with a good salary and benefits with little to no experience and little to no consequences? And based on this ad, no cutting toenails!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM

I think Dr. Roth brings up a great point. Our profession convinced itself that surgery-only residencies would give us credibility. But it has caused a great lack in the medicine part of podiatric medicine. I enjoyed doing surgery but stopped in 2011.

Ironically, since then, I have helped more patients heal from chronic pain syndromes via functional and regenerative medicine and was able to create a more lucrative practice. Without a focus on causes of pathology, and developing a plan of action to heal our patients, this profession will be eaten alive by MDs, DOs, NPs, PAs, and anyone else who sees the void we have created.

I just purchased new phenol. With the cost of the phenol and the hazardous shipping charges plus shipping, it was ridiculously priced, a real rip-off.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1 B
From:  Neil Barney, DPM

A simple problem solved: Use sodium hydroxide 10%. Although I am retired, I used this solution for 42 years of practice...two ten-second swabbings at the nail matrix area after curettage. There is so much less drainage than phenol and virtually no pain. It is much less expensive and better for the patient. Gill Podiatry Supply and Equipment Company still sells it.

I'm sure a compounding pharmacy could make up the solution, if not commercially available. I remember being told an acid liquifies and a base coagulates. That's why there's less drainage. Also, if the patient isn't sensitive to penicillin, put some amoxicillin (any strength) powder in the wound. The infection rate is near zero.
