NY Podiatrist Discusses Psoriatic Arthritis
Even though symptoms of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) vary from person to person, many will observe the disease in their feet. According to the Archives of Medical Science, 50% to 70% of those with psoriatic arthritis experience foot abnormalities. For example, swelling of the toes (dactylitis) occurs in more than half (65%) of people with psoriatic disease. “Some of the first signs of psoriatic arthritis may appear in the feet,” says William Spielfogel, DPM, chief of podiatry at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Psoriatic arthritis can attack your feet in a variety of ways, says Dr. Spielfogel. “The toes may have a sausage-like appearance,” he says, that leads to a deep pain when pressure or weight is applied to them. “You may also experience pain in areas where tendons attach to bones, for example in the back of the heel and/or the bottom of the heel,” he explains. If your psoriatic arthritis has gone untreated, you may experience multiple swollen joints and even structural damage that can be seen on digital imaging.

Hines VA Hospital Program to be Adopted Nationwide
Department of Veterans Affairs medical officials visited Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital on Jan. 10 to learn new techniques used by the hospital’s podiatry service. The group of doctors, nurses, and physical therapists learned best practices for a new remote temperature monitoring mat prescribed to nearly 400 Hines VA veterans at high risk of limb amputation.

OH Podiatry Patients Left in Lurch After Office Closes Without Explanation
North Canton Podiatry patients have been left without answers after their doctor's office abruptly closed. Georgia Meyer began seeing Dr. Priyanka Mude about four months ago. She had two surgeries performed by the doctor and was supposed to have a third on Jan. 23 but said she is now scrambling to obtain her medical records and documentation needed for work leave.
The Canton Repository's calls to the office this week went to a full voicemail. The company's website on Wednesday began displaying a pop-up notice that the doctor is "temporarily out of the office."

The 2nd MILES event was a great success, welcoming the 1st Annual HCA Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency and Fellowship Summit with participants from across the country and featuring a multidisciplinary national and international faculty with expertise in diabetic lower extremity reconstruction, deformity correction, trauma, and external fixation. MILES-San Antonio will hold its summer scientific meeting MILES-Europe June 13-15, 2024 in Athens, Greece.

CMS Finalizes Rule to Expand Access to Health Information and Improve the Prior Authorization Process
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has finalized the CMS Interoperability and Prior Authorization Final Rule.
Beginning primarily in 2026, impacted payers (not including QHP issuers on the FFEs) will be required to send prior authorization decisions within 72 hours for expedited (i.e., urgent) requests and seven calendar days for standard (i.e., non-urgent) requests for medical items and services.
