RESIDENCY UPDATE

Unmatched Graduates Remain Key Issue for Podiatry in 2014

Although the final number of unmatched graduates will not be known until after Match Day (March 20, 2014) and the ensuing scramble (for unmatched and those not choosing to enter the Match), it is clear from recent statistics that this will be troublesome for many 2014 and recent graduates.

Factors affecting the final number, including the percentage of students passing Part 2 of the National Boards, as well as the number of new residency slots added or existing slots lost. Currently, there are 645 total eligible applicants for 554 positions.

Ill-Fitting Shoe Can Harm Children's Feet: Aussie Podiatrist

We might not realize it, but proper shoes are one of the most important things on the back-to-school list each year. School kids spend at least 30 hours each week in their school shoes, highlighting the importance of having the correct shoe for their feet. Podiatrist at Firm Foundations Podiatry, Rebecca Gilroy, said children could experience substantial problems with their feet due to ill-fitting shoes.

Rebecca Gilroy

"Poorly fitting shoes can be problematic and may lead to problems like ingrown toenails, corns or calluses on the feet, and foot pain," Mrs. Gilroy said. "These problems can be painful and often avoided with good footwear." Gilroy said children's feet were more susceptible to damage. "Children's feet aren't just little adult feet - they are soft and pliable which makes them prone to damage from abnormal pressure from shoes," she said.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Bret Ribotsky:  What is the biggest issue facing podiatry in 2014?

(L-R) Drs. Barry Block and Bret Ribotsky

Barry Block: Although we face many serious issues such as the residency shortage, Obamacare, and ICD-10, the major isue facing podiatry is our identity crisis. To survive in the radiply changing healthcare environment, we must maintain our status as practitioners who can uniquely diagnose and treat foot and ankle disorders. This means combining our knowledge of biomechanics, dermatology, and surgery. This we do better than anyone else. If we train our students only to be surgeons, we risk losing our identity and value in the healthcare system.

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
Orthofeet Partners with AADE To Promote Foot Health and Mobility

Orthofeet, a leading designer and manufacturer of specialty footwear for diabetic patients, announced a partnership with the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) to develop a grassroots educational campaign promoting foot health for adults with diabetes.

The campaign is designed to ‘educate the educators’ on the role of daily foot care and therapeutic footwear in maintaining mobility. Orthofeet will then provide educators with resources to teach healthy foot care practices to their patients at hospitals, senior centers, and other institutions. Educators will also be able to partner with local authorized Orthofeet dealers to help qualified patients obtain therapeutic shoes covered by Medicare.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A

Marti was a true gentleman podiatrist, and gracefully led the charge for the profession in the Veterans Administration. Podiatry owes its credible and valuable presence in the VA system to his perseverance and love for the profession. He and Lillian are close family friends, and his absence will be sorely felt. We will miss him, but will never forget him and his monumental contribution to furthering the evolution of the profession. Thanks Marti, and we love you.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B

I had the pleasure of working with Marty for the Federal Services Podiatric Medical Association from 1986 through 2005 in various capacities. Marty was very instrumental in bringing in military members to become active in the association. He also stressed the need for military members to join the APMA and seek leadership positions. For the first time military podiatrists as delegates and alternate delegates to the APMA House of Delegates. Marty was also a key player in many of our battles, including obtaining board certification pay for podiatrists in the military services. He was honorable, caring, and willing to work with anyone to achieve parity for podiatrists in the Veterans Administration and Military Services.
