NY Podiatrist Discusses Risks of Going Barefoot at the Airport
Samantha Landau, DPM, Assistant Professor of orthopedics and pediatrics at Touro University New York College of Podiatric Medicine says you should never go barefoot through airport security. First of all, there’s the risk of stepping on debris that could seriously injure you, like broken glass, sharp pieces of metal, jagged plastic that fell off someone’s overpacked rollaboard suitcase frame, or worse.
|
|
Dr. Samantha Landau |
“Even a minor puncture wound can lead to infection or need medical treatment,” Dr. Landau said, adding that she once had a patient who “had been in a rush and stepped on something sharp on the floor. He didn’t notice immediately, but later developed an infection at the site. It wasn’t too severe, but it required antibiotics and a few visits to the clinic to clear up.”

Documentation in a Changing CTP Regulatory Landscape
Key Takeaways
-
Clear, consistent documentation matters more—not less—without prescriptive LCD checklists. Clinicians must now tell a complete clinical story across the record.
-
Baseline data and standard-of-care evidence remain non-negotiable. Incomplete histories, vague descriptors, and inconsistent measurements create risk.
-
Well-designed EHR tools can reduce burden and protect compliance. Guardrails, prompts, and trending data help clinicians document appropriately without slowing care.

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
5 Practical Tips to Reduce Denials, Improve Cash Flow
Technology is often the go-to solution for healthcare administrative workflow woes, including billing. Still, it’s just one of several practical steps that can deliver tangible impact, many of which require little to no capital investment. Here are five of the most effective.
3. Improve Patient Registration Accuracy
Front-end patient registration errors are a significant source of lost revenue for physician practices. Incorrect patient demographics or insurance details can result in denials and payment delays. At the same time, failure to properly verify eligibility can cause services to be rendered without coverage, leading to write-offs. Additionally:
-
Duplicate or mismatched patient records can trigger compliance issues and billing confusion.
-
Coordination of benefits errors can cause denials due to incorrect payer sequencing.
-
Outdated or missing authorization or referral data results in non-covered services and denials.
To avoid these costly mistakes, ensure registration staff verify and update patient information at every visit. Also, educate the registration team on the proper questions to ask patients, on identifying common patient employment status and age errors, and on managing unique circumstances that may arise.

What Is a Good Inheritance? Six Great Assets to Inherit
Leaving a good inheritance takes planning. If you want to help your heirs, these are the best assets to leave them.
2. Cash substitutes
Besides cash, Michael Romero, President of Argent Trust Oklahoma at Argent Financial Group described a few types of accounts that are almost as effective as cash inheritance. For one, life insurance on yourself. When you pass away, the life insurance company will pay your heirs the death benefit in cash, according to the beneficiary instructions you list in the contract. This bypasses probate, so your heirs don’t have to wait for the courts to verify your will before receiving the money.
It’s a simple process. Your heirs typically just need to present your death certificate to the insurer and fill out a short form. Plus, your heirs will receive the payment income-tax-free, though the death benefit is added to the value of your estate and could be charged estate taxes.

Lessons Learned From My First Time in the Operating Room
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
Ask Questions - When given the opportunity to ask questions at the end of a case, take it. Inquire about the surgeon's preferences or their reasons for choosing one approach over another.
Handle Unpleasant Encounters Professionally - Unfortunately, some individuals in the OR may exhibit unfriendly/mean/downright rude behavior. It can be challenging but try not to take it personally. Maintain your professionalism and focus on your role as a guest in the OR. People can be VERY particular in the OR. Roll with the punches and try to not get worked up. It sucks but the more you work with that individual, the more accustomed you become to their quirks. Granted, some behavior is not acceptable. Know when you need to escalate the situation to someone above you.

Query: American Association of Surgical Foot Specialists
While going through some of my father's papers, I stumbled across several correspondences regarding the American Association of Surgical Foot Specialists ranging from the 1950s to 1970s. This is NOT the American Ambulatory Foot Surgeons group. I'm curious if it's still around somewhere. Would there be any interest in creating an online documentary repository?
