MI Podiatrist Discusses Dangers of Frostbite

Frostbite is a serious tissue-destroying disorder. It is also something that can be avoided. The Michigan Podiatric Medical Association (MPMA) has some advice to share during these winter months. “When you’re out in the cold, your body works hard to stay warm by altering blood flow toward your heart and lungs,” said Jodie Sengstock, DPM, MPMA Director of Professional Relations. “This leaves your extremities – arms, legs, and feet – vulnerable to cold injury, especially toes and fingers.”

Dr. Jodie Sengstock

Depending on the severity of the exposure, frostbite can affect the skin or underlying tissue. In most cases, the area becomes numb and feels frozen. Skin will appear waxy, white or grayish. Any exposure should be evaluated and treated by a physician. Avoiding frostbite is easier than treating it. If you must go out in bitter cold, be prepared.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY STUDENTS IN THE NEWS
Former UK Ballet Dancer Studying to be a Podiatrist

An ex-professional ballet dancer who had to re-think her career is now training to become a podiatrist at Health Sciences University, Bournemouth. Pippa Myres suffered a major ankle injury that stopped her from being able to continue dancing. After considering physiotherapy courses as her next step, she then found the podiatry course at the Boscombe-based university.

Pippa Myres

“Although I had never thought about becoming a podiatrist, the more I read about the profession, the more excited I became. There was also the opportunity to work in the performing arts again; rather than being on the stage, being part of the team that supported the dancers to have stronger and longer careers." she said. Pippa added, “I am loving every moment of the course so far. I am looking forward to the upcoming clinical placements, developing clinical skills, and putting all I have learned into practice.”

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Areas of Financial Waste to Cut at Your Practice

Here are a few ways to reduce financial waste, according to practice management and accounting professionals from across the country:

4. Monitor Billing

"The net cost of billing and collection goes beyond direct expenses related to billing - things like personnel salaries, benefits, and supplies - or the percentage paid to outside billing companies. More importantly, monies uncollected related to poor performance must be taken into consideration to determine the real total cost of billing and collections. Having said that, it's critical that practices have checks and balances in place to track and trend performance to assure that all monies are collected for services performed." - Jose Carrersas, vice president and COO, PropMD Practice Management, Pinecrest, FL.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING & BILLING)
RE: New Wound Care LCD Rules
From: Joseph Borreggine, DPM

Attention... anyone performing wound care in our profession needs to become very familiar with the new wound care and biological wound graft application. As of February 11, 2025, there is a new LCD for all 7 MACs. Please review this LCD before you proceed on or after February 11, 2025 performance of any wound care with biologic wound graft application for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) or venous leg ulcers (VLUs) with graft. There are a number of important changes that include restriction on what grafts can be applied to DFUs (13) and VLUs (7) that are approved by Medicare, and the 100 not approved.

Along with these changes above, there are expanded documentation requirements and limit to the number of grafts that can be applied initially (4), and what is required to apply any further grafts (up to 8 total) during the 12-16 week time frame. There is also a number of key requirements that are needed to be performed before wound grafts can be applied.

Hat tip to Drs Michael Warshaw and Michael Brody who have done their due diligence bringing this to our attention.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE ADVANTAGE)
From Ron Freireich, DPM

This is beyond outrageous! Let me start by saying what a weak statement from the president of the AMA, with him ending his statement by saying, "it’s time for a new approach to physician payment reform.” No, a new approach is long overdue. Additionally, he states patient access will suffer if physicians close their practices. Why should physicians close their practices that we all worked so long and hard to build. He should have stated that physicians may start to drop out of Medicate Advantage plans and start charging patients cash if they want access.

We are all well aware of the massive fraud these Medicare Advantage plans are committing. The fact that CMS is rewarding the villain and penalizing the victim is unfathomable. The only conclusion that I can come up with is that there is something very nefarious going on and it should be investigated. In my opinion, the leaders in every medical association and the CEOs of every hospital across the country need to take action now as a united front.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) PART 1 A

RE: The Passing of Ed Fazekas, DPM (Matt Werd, DPM)

I am devastated by the passing of my 1981 TUSPM classmate. Ed has been a friend and colleague since we matriculated at PCPM in 1977. Ed was one of a few classmates I would always see at CME meetings, especially in Florida. We were delegates for 20 years, he with FPMA, and me with the Federal Services. Our respective delegations were seated near each other at the annual APMA HOD meetings.

Ed can be described as an individual that exemplified core values - “integrity/service before self and commitment to excellence” as a professional. His priorities of family, faith, service to his patients and chosen profession were demonstrated in all he did. All of us who knew Ed are better because of him. His colleague, Matt Werd’s beautiful summary of Ed’s career/personal life will bring some solace to those of us affected by Ed’s passing. Our prayers are with Ed’s family and friends at this time. RIP my friend.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 B

RE: The Passing of Ed Fazekas, DPM (Matt Werd, DPM)

I am truly saddened reading about the passing of Ed Fazekas, DPM. Some 35+ yrs. ago when I opened my practice, Ed called me and congratulated me on my new endeavor. He gave me great advice that aided in my success.

I looked forward each year, knowing I would get to see and speak with him at SAM in Orlando, Fl. This year will not be the same without Ed. May he rest in peace and may his family find peace dealing with their loss.

Martin T Girling,. DPM

I'm just learning of the passing of Ed Fazekas, which greatly saddens me. Ed was such a wonderful gentleman and a great podiatrist. Although we have not spoken in many years, when I was active in practice, he communicated with me frequently. He was such a sincere advocate for his patients, with great insight and judgment. RIP Edward; sincere condolences to his family.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1 C

RE: The Passing of Ed Fazekas, DPM (Matt Werd, DPM)

I am in shock. Ed was a friend who, unfortunately I did not see as often as I'd have liked. Matt Werd, DPM writes a beautiful tribute to Ed so I will try not to repeat, but only say I agree with all the deserved accolades.

When I became president of the FPMA, Ed was there to help me understand much of what would be needed. He would always lend an ear when I needed it, and give advice. He was the most humble guy you could know. He has done so much for the FPMA as a past president and APMA as a long-time delegate from Florida. I have always known Ed to be kind and generous in all he did. I nearly joined his podiatry team 33 years ago but decided to take a different path on my own. We were in touch while involved with the FPMA, as both of us are past presidents. I recently moved away and unfortunately lost touch. I am so devastated yet feel so fortunate to have known such a great man and physician as Ed. I am honored to have been able to call him my friend.

My heartfelt condolences to Maria and their 4 children (Juliana, Nicholas, Gabriela, and Christy). Ed, you will ALWAYS be missed but NEVER forgotten. Rest in peace my friend. You deserve it.
