Indoor Footgear Necessary During the Pandemic: MN Podiatrist
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "The pandemic certainly hasn’t been good for our mental health, nor our physical well-being since many of us are getting far less activity. What about the consequences of strolling around the house in our pajamas and socks? It is surprising to many how significant they can be. Many of us kick off our shoes the minute we walk in the door. Feels good, doesn’t it? Let the toes run free and stretch out those aching arch muscles. But in the times of the pandemic, humans are spending more time in the home than ever before. That means more activities are performed in the home environment than ever. And too often, this means shoeless!"
|
|
Dr. Conway McLean |
"For many, weight-bearing (standing and walking for most of us) is stressful. For a multitude of reasons, problems can develop from being on our feet without the support, protection, and cushioning of a shoe. Walking without the protection provided by shoes means minor skin trauma has a greater chance of occurring, damage that will heal only slowly if at all in the face of PAD and diabetes. The answer is simply to wear some kind of footgear in the home, the recommendation of all diabetic experts," says Dr. McLean.

Retired CO Podiatrist Helps to Extinquish Dangerous Wildfire
Four firefighters from Florissant Fire Protection District (FFPD) recently underwent some very intense on-the-job training while responding to a call to assist with the Marshall and Middle Fork Fires in Boulder County. The wildland fire began the afternoon of Dec. 29 and due to high winds, rapidly escalated into urban areas. Chris Walters, DPM, a retired podiatric surgeon and who serves part-time with Southwest Teller County EMS, joined FFPD last summer. Although he has helped to fight several wildland fires, “this one was extensive, urban, and devastating,” he said.

Dr. Walters said there were many different agencies that responded to assist from throughout Colorado and even from other states. He credits FFPD Capt. Michael Bukowski for the success of their efforts, stating, “Mike is a very impressive young man and a good leader.”

| PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY | |
10 Ways to Use Medical Practice Funding
Medical practices can use additional funding for a number of purposes. Here are 10 of the most popular uses:
3. Upgrading technology
Digitizing medical records improves efficiency by streamlining billing and patient communication, as well as making it easier to share information between physicians. New technologies can also help you offer more services and attract new patients. However, the upfront investment of upgrading and adjusting this new technology and software can strain your cash flow.
Funding options:
-
SBA 7(a) guaranteed loans
-
Business lines of credit
-
Merchant cash advances

Query: 2022 Changes and a New LCD
CMS, Noridian specifically, has new wound care documentation and coding requirements for CPT 1104x beginning in 2022. I have reviewed the LCD and from what I can gather, there are changes to the “type” of tissue that can be debrided to bill the CPT 1104x, how often the CPT 1104x can be billed, and how long the CPT 1104x can be billed.
Can anyone provide some clarity on the new rules for wound debridement coding? What has changed?
Tonia Silva, CPC, Lakeport, CA
Response: Dr. Halperin of the CPMA Medicare Committee is finalizing a draft document about the new Wound Care LCD, which should be published shortly.
Yes, there are many changes and documentation is key. Although many things now need to be formally documented, they should have been documented anyway as part of a good chart.
