ABPS NEWS
Name Change for the American Board of Podiatric Surgery

The American Board of Podiatric Surgery® (ABPS) will adopt the trade name the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS), effective July 1, 2014. The ABPS changed its name to American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery to clarify the anatomical scope of podiatric surgical certification to the public, insurance industry, and governmental organizations.

The name change will not affect the board certification process. The ABFAS will continue to offer two certificates, Board Certified in Foot Surgery and Board Certified in Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery. Certificates will reflect the new name. Diplomates requesting a certificate with the new name will be able to obtain one at the current fee for a replacement certificate. Diplomates will have until June 30, 2017 to implement use of the new name.

PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
IL Podiatrist Discusses Onychomycosis and Nail Salons

"You can get a pedicure if you have a nail fungus," says podiatrist Dr. Stephanie Wu, associate dean of research at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. But be upfront about your condition when you book an appointment in case the spa has a policy for dealing with this condition. Wu says you need to be sure that the salon you choose has a strong instrument sterilization and foot tank-cleaning protocol so you're not passing along your problem to others ("cross-contamination").

Dr. Stephanie Wu

Best would be to bring your own pedicure tools, but, Wu says, "Unless you sterilize or sanitize them after use, they may not necessarily be better than professional salons that use sterilized instruments." And bring your own polish (again because of cross-contamination). Nail fungus is difficult to treat, so prevention is the key, Wu says. "Don't be shy about asking the nail salon for proof of sanitation."

OUTSIDE INTERESTS
FL Podiatrist Scores a Hole-in-One

Dr. Jane Walter, a Palm Coast podiatrist, had the first hole-in-one of her brief golfing career on Jan. 11 at Cypress Head Golf Club in Port Orange. She aced the par 3, 117-yard 6th hole with a 5 wood. Walter, who was playing with Merelee Walsh, also of Palm Coast, along with a “couple from Toronto, Canada,” said it was very windy and she used more club than usual for the shot. A hole in one for any golfer is almost always a major highlight.

Dr. Jane Walter

In January 2010, after the massive earthquake that ravaged Haiti and killed hundreds of thousands of people, Walter went to the stricken nation and spent 10 days giving medical aid to the many grievously wounded residents.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS- PART 1
"Buck" McKeon's Retirement Bolsters CA Podiatrist's Congressional Campaign

Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) teared up Thursday as he formally announced plans to retire after more than two decades in Congress.

Dr. Lee Rogers

McKeon has endorsed Republican former state Sen. Tony Strickland to succeed him. Republican State Sen. Steve Knight also has said he plans to run, setting up a primary race. Several Democrats, -- including Dr. Lee Rogers, a podiatrist who ran against McKeon in 2012, and Evan Thomas, a retired Air Force officer and test pilot -- also have signaled interest in running.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS - PART 2
NE Podiatrist Will Run for Legislature

Retired Omaha podiatrist Dr. Robert “Bob” Hilkemann will formally announce his intention to run for the Nebraska Legislature next week. Hilkemann will announce on Jan. 21 that he will seek the District 4 seat in west Omaha currently held by State Sen. Pete Pirsch, who is term-limited.

Dr. Robert Hilkemann

Hilkemann was a practicing podiatrist in Omaha for 37 years and founded the Foot and Ankle Center of Nebraska in 1984. He has never sought public office before but served on the State Board of Health from 1983 to 1988, serving as chairman for two years. He was a schoolteacher before being a podiatrist.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
VA Podiatrist Convicted of Falsifying Medical Records

Virginia podiatrist Dr. Ilene Terrell was convicted today of lying in a federal probe of Orthofix International and its bone-growth stimulators. Terrell copped a plea to 4 counts of making a false declaration to a grand jury, according to the office of the U.S. district attorney for Masschusetts. Terrell faces up to 5 years in prison, 3 years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine for each count, according to a press release. Federal investigators accused Terrell of falsifying patient medical records in order to justify Medicare reimbursement for procedures using the Orthofix stimulators.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Source for 70% Salicylic Acid

Does anyone know where I can get a stock supply of 70% salicylic acid for treatment of verrucae. Here in Massachusetts, we need to write a script for each individual patient, then hope they remember to bring it with them for their follow-up appointments.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Martin Mussman, DPM

Martin Mussman, DPM died at his home on January 13, 2014. Dr. Mussman proudly served the Veteran's Administration over 40 years, including serving as the Director of Podiatry Service for the Central Office from 1987 through 1997.  Marty was a true pioneer for podiatric medicine in the Department of Veterans Affairs and worked tirelessly to carry the podiatry service to its rightful place. He was a strong, dedicated and passionate advocate for podiatric public health, achieving board certification in The American Board of Podiatric Public Health and was at the forefront of podiatric residency education.

Dr. Martin Mussman

He was a member of the National Academies of Practice as a Distinguished Practitioner. He was a founding member of the Federal Services Podiatric Medical Association. During his tenure as National Program Director, he increased the number of VA residency positions and almost single-handedly solved the residency genesis crisis of that generation. His pursuit of excellence in all aspects of his life inspired many. He will be sorely missed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1
RE: Intractable Dorsal Nerve Pain (Randy Lisch, DPM)
From: Robert S. Schwartz, C. Ped.

We have a customer with almost the same diagnosis, with nerve damage at the dorsal aspect of the 3rd, 4th, and the 5th met shafts as well as the corresponding proximal phalanges. We fitted him with extremely soft leather upper shoes, generously giving him adequate instep and toe box room, PLUS a rigid rocker sole to prevent the shoe from bending and to minimize creasing over the affected area. We tried one pair. It worked. We subsequently added rockers on all his shoes.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 2
From: Wm. Barry Turner, BSN, DPM

I have been following this line of discussion, and I feel that it is shows enlightenment that HBO is even an consideration. I am pretty sure that most insurance companies will not pay for the HBO with that particular diagnosis, but that is not the concern of the referring physician. The question that comes to my mind is, would HBO help AVN? I feel sure that it would. I have done HBO for years. I own three full body mono-chambers and provide the service in my office. HBO is not a panacea and does not cure every ailment, but it does encourage angiogenesis. If the pathology causing the AVN has been addressed, then I would certainly entertain HBO as a viable option.

Full body HBO is much safer than antibiotics or surgical intervention. I have supervised literally thousands of full body HBO dives and only rarely have I seen any adverse reactions. To me, it is almost mind-boggling that every podiatrist does not have a full body HBO chamber in their office. But I would not stop with HBO. I would couple the treatment with an electrical stimulator or ultrasound therapy. Even a bone stimulator should be considered. Multiple modalities tend to provide better results when it comes to ischemia.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLL)
From: Jack Sasiene, DPM

First, let me thank Dr. Garoufalis for responding in this forum. I hope all of you reading out there take the time to let him know how you really feel. One cannot do a good job leading unless they get input from the members. Just grumbling and following does nothing.

I think after reading the string of comments on this and many other impediments to practice, that doctors, not just podiatrists, are fed up with the business of medicine. The issue is not podiatry here, but the fact that we can’t be, for the most part, doctors. Between ICD-10, meaningful use, and...
