PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Podiatrists Comment on Julian Edelman's Jones Fx

According to two members of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine — Drs. Maggie Fournier and R. Clint Laird — fracture healing takes about 6-8 weeks. At nine weeks, pain and swelling may exist, but return to play is reasonable, given that everything has healed properly. Neither Fournier nor Laird has seen New England Patriot's receiver Julian Edelman's x-rays, so they don't know exactly how his recovery is progressing. They can merely provide general insight based on their past experiences with athletes and Jones fractures.
Drs. Maggie Fournier and R. Clint Laird

"In terms of limitation (with Edelman), I don't think we will see much," Fournier said. "If there is an issue at this point, I anticipate it would not be with the actual bone, but with the muscles and the swelling that can follow this injury while he's still recovering." As Laird pointed out, it's unlikely that Edelman lost much muscle explosiveness; even when pro athletes are non-weight bearing, as Edelman likely was for several weeks, they're working extensively on muscle stimulation and low-impact exercises like deep pool running that keep the muscles active. And because Edelman has been running since at least Dec. 11, his body has probably had time to re-adjust to the feeling of making football moves.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: UnitedHealthcare Problems

Has anyone had issues with UnitedHealthcare payments? We have had delays receiving info from their website, stating they have paid claims. We have yet to get paid since October 2015. I have heard they had a software update in October and that has created issues for many MDs and DPMs. Any other info would be much appreciated on how to resolve this issue.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) - PART 1A
From: George Jacobson, DPM

Although I can't disagree with Dr. Brody's point that we can opt-out each year, Medicare has become a "bait and switch." It may be semantics, but incentives are now penalties. In psychology, rewarding behavior has been seen as superior to punishment. Classical conditioning uses rewards for behavioral modification. Weren't we supposed to be rewarded? Wasn't Obamacare supposed to have saved an average of $2,400 per family? It is just another "bait and switch." Their harebrained ideas and programs had to be implemented first, to find out what the changes really entailed and any unintended consequences.

Maybe they were the intended consequences! The fewer patients seen per day, and the fewer providers in a network, the lower the outlay for the government and insurance plans. EHR has lowered productivity and quality. It has added to costs and created penalties. What's next? Perhaps a government mandate of a $50,000 upgrade to protect the data you transmit. Oh I forgot, you can always opt out each year and avoid the "mandate." Those who have opted out of all insurance aren't attached to these umbilicals.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) EMR - PART 1B

As I am now working part-time at the end of my career, I do not use EMR. The penalties for handwritten notes and not meeting meaningful use are the same. I have received letters to the same effect. You can file hardship claims, but they seem time-consuming and not worth the effort for me.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP

Outrageous Shoe of the Day

Imagine Cinderella's glass slipper scaled to about 100 times its original size and dropped on the coast of Taiwan. That's the new church in Ocean View Park in Budai township. Looking like it was plucked from a distorted fairy tale, the glittering, shoe-shaped building is made up of about 320 tinted glass panels and stands 55 feet tall by 36 feet wide.

A really big shoe to fill! (photo AFP/Getty Images)

It was reportedly constructed by the Southwest Coast National Scenic Area in an effort to attract female worshippers and tourists to the site.
