Phenol Spill at FL Podiatry Office Results in Hospitalization of 7
|
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to a Hazmat situation at Jessie Trice Community Health Center |
Seven people were hospitalized Thursday after they were exposed to a strong disinfectant used in a podiatry office when two small glass containers shattered at a community health center in Northwest Miami-Dade. One employee had direct exposure to phenol solution, while six others suffered from inhalation exposure. Miami-Dade Fire Chief Gary Fregeolle said all seven were taken to the hospital.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW |
Parole Denied for Podiatrist Who Hired Killer
A podiatrist serving life in prison for having his business partner killed to collect $60,000 in life insurance was denied release for three years after reportedly lying to the parole board about the 1976 murder. Dr. William Moalem, 75, was also denied for three years in 2013 but exercised his right under Marsy’s Law to advance the hearing because he complied with all the parole board’s requests.
Moalem is serving life with the possibility of parole at the California Men’s Colony State Prison at San Luis Obispo for the Oct. 13, 1976 murder of his podiatrist business partner Dr. Benjamin Hurwitz. Hurwitz was fatally shot while driving on State Route 92 in Foster City. The case grew cold for 23 years until 1998 when Moalem’s former wife revealed he had hired bar bouncer Richard Quilopras to kill Hurwitz. Moalem, who had financial problems, was the beneficiary of Hurwitz’s $60,000 life insurance policy and in the process of buying his podiatry business.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS |
Bret Ribotsky: Is there a difference between using twice the amount of a 1% cream vs. a 2% cream (thus the same milligrams of active drug) when treating tinea pedis.
|
Leon Kircik |
Leon Kircik, MD (dermatologist): Yes, there is a significant difference. It's about the penetration of the active ingredient. The science of the vehicles is used to accommodate the penetration, and as such, just using twice or three times the amount of product does not mean that more will get absorbed. It is as if each portal will only allow drug absorption for a specific time. Using 2% active drug will double the amount of medication at the cellular level, and that could help make the difference between cure and no cure.

QUERIES NON-CLINICAL |

QUERIES (DME) |
Query: Medicare Re-Validation Fee
I just re-validated today for my Medicare Fee-For-Service (FFS) Medicare Part B provider number for my practice. I have re-validated for my DME supplier number through Medicare (National Supplier Clearinghouse) and had to pay a fee. Does anyone know whether or not a fee is required for Medicare Part B FFS providers when they re-validate?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) - PART 1A |

The MAC and iPAD work great!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (EMR) - PART 1B |
From: David Weiss, DPM
I have been using “MacPractice”, a Mac-based EMR/EHR for about 3 years. I have found the software to be very stable and their customer support exceptionally great. The software is highly customizable for podiatry, and works great when I use Dragon voice to dictate with it. I can also use my iPhone or iPad with it. In addition, it is compliant with all the new Obamacare regulations and Meaningful Use.
Disclosure: I have no financial interest in this company.
David Weiss, DPM, Richmond, VA

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLLS) |
From: William Deutsch, DPM
One of the reasons podiatry appealed to me as a profession was the potential for diversity. Licensure to treat an anatomical site allowed for surgery, dermatology, medicine, orthopedics, biomechanics, etc. as the need presented itself. It only required my interest to invest in time and training for the needed skills to develop proficiency. The last thing I want is some rogue faction in the profession by virtue of political machinations and excessive grandfathering seeking to claim 'divine right' to limit my ability to make full use of the license.
William Deutsch, DPM, Valley Stream, NY
