APMWA Announces 38th Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 38th Annual Student Writing Competition.
-
All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.
-
There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
-
First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

MI Podiatrist Discusses Excessive Pronation
According to Conway McLean, DPM, "A certain percentage of individuals have a perfectly normal foot type with the proper alignment of joints, the correct tension on the multiple tendons and muscles. There are people with a perfect arch. But this is not the norm, since most of us tend towards one side or the other of this equation, an arch that is too high or one too low. Or, quite distinct, one can have an arch which lowers too much at a certain point in the gait cycle (i.e. when walking) but otherwise is normal. Some pronation is normal, proper, and healthy, but those with excessive amounts tend to have problems associated with their abnormal function and poor biomechanics."

"Probably the most effective deterrent to excessive pronation would be some type of arch support. Experts claim a majority of knee replacements could be prevented if the suffering individuals had worn properly prescribed foot orthotics years prior. Obviously, this is impossible to prove but the message is relevant. The time and expertise to properly prescribe and effectively fit a foot orthotic is significant, but the benefits to the musculoskeletal system, upon which we literally depend, are many. They can relieve pain, improve quality of life, enhance cardiovascular health, and more, all by reducing the deleterious consequences of too much pronation," says Dr. McLean.

FL Podiatrist Completes Navy Seal Frogman Swim Across Tampa Bay
Matt Werd, DPM just completed the Navy Seal Frogman Swim Tampa Bay, a grueling open water 4-mile swim from St. Petersburg to Tampa, Florida. The conditions were the most challenging in the event's 15 year history - a strong outgoing tidal current, 58-degree water temperature, and a prevailing 12.5 mph headwind.

The event was capped at 150 entrants and sold out last August in 10 minutes. The event honors Fallen Navy Seals who were killed in action or killed in training and raises money for Fallen Seal families. This year's event hoped to raise $1.2 million dollars. Dr. Werd swam in honor of a fallen seal from Lakeland, FL and presented the fallen seal's parents with a special flag - that he crossed the Bay with - at the finish line. His kayak support during the crossing was his son Matthew Jr.

Ways to Improve Patients’ Financial Literacy
Medical debt is of growing concern across the nation. Nearly 1-in-5 U.S. households has reported having some form of overdue medical debt. And it’s middle-class Americans who are struggling the most, with nearly 1 in 4 — or roughly 17 million people — having unpaid medical bills. Here are some ways healthcare providers and payers can make the financial experience easier for consumers,
3. Make convenience integral to the experience
When it comes to offering convenient payment options, conventional wisdom indicates that young people are more likely to use digital technology than seniors. However, in reality, a PYMTS survey recently found that 8% of Baby Boomers and seniors had made a payment through a provider’s website, which matched the percentage of Generation Z. Similarly, more than 20% of Baby Boomers and seniors reported making a payment through a patient portal. It’s more important than ever to offer a financial experience that provides the same level of convenience consumers have come to expect in other industries, which can improve payment collection rates – both at the time of service and afterwards – and enhance patient loyalty.

Query: Punctate Keratotic Lesions
A 65 year old male has suffered from multiple punctate keratotic growths in the arches of both feet for 20 years. He denies any family history of this or arsenic exposure. He has no medical conditions currently and doesn't take any medication. Most of the lesions are nucleated and debridement provides some temporary pain relief.

He had cryotherapy in the past which did not resolve them and his dermatologist says they are "caused by his shoes". Any thoughts on diagnosis/treatment would be appreciated.

Query: CIOX Request for Non-Medicare Advantage Charts
I am inquiring if anyone has received a request from CIOX for non-Medicare Advantage patient charts. I received a request for three commercial BCBS patients, which they stated in their request "the records will be reviewed by certified coders working for Advantasure, our risk adjustment vendor. ...we want to clarify members' specific medical conditions and ensure we have the documentation required by CMS and DHS."
Is CIOX now reviewing commercial as well? I appreciate any input or advice.

Do you remember your very first time? I’m referring to the ocean of difference between ephemeral pleasure and enduring gratitude. One was the first to tie the fundamental basis and importance of anatomy to all clinical situations at foot and regaled myself and classmates at PCPM in the late ‘80s with the Gary Bauer “Power Hours”. Brilliant! Nonstop, case after case, never repeating the same x-rays, knowledge layered with experience crowned by the desire to share it all. We sat mesmerized. We started to “get it”.
Another taught me the application of clinical knowledge in the real life setting of private practice and how to serve patients and community while earning a living to support your family. Dr. Ganley responded to my typewritten snail mail letter in May of 1989 and accepted me sight unseen for my very first clinical rotation outside the comfort of...
