Adults with bunions in need of bunion removal surgery may qualify for upcoming research studies. “A patient is required to stay with us somewhere between three to five days,” said Dr. Howze. “The patient takes part in our research, which is to trial investigative medications to determine their effectiveness for pain control after surgery.”

IL Podiatrist Sues Over Unwanted Faxes
Businesses that stuck with fax machines in the age of email and texts have found unsolicited advertisers are still around too, filling their bins with hard-copy spam. Two Illinois fax users -- a podiatrist in Evanston and a veterinary practice in Orland Park -- have filed proposed class actions against companies they claim keep sending them unwanted faxes. They’re seeking damages under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, a law often invoked against robo callers or text ads.
The podiatrist, Dr. Robert Gerber, filed his complaint against Medcubics Inc., a seller of medical-billing software, over an unwanted fax that he said didn’t contain an “opt out” notice, as required by law. Representatives of Walgreens and Medcubics didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

FL Podiatrist To Pay $5.5M To Feds in DME Case
The United States Department of Justice just announced that Robert Gaynor and his company ”Dia Foot” must pay $5.5M to resolve claims that his custom shoe inserts for diabetic patients were not actually custom made. The allegations were brought under the qui tam or whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act by a former Dia-Foot employee. Foot Care Store, Inc. d/b/a Dia-Foot, a diabetic shoe company and its President and CEO Robert Gaynor, have agreed to pay $5,538,338 to settle allegations that the company sold custom diabetic shoe inserts that were not actually custom-fabricated in accordance with Medicare standards.

Dr. Kass is right on. If you attend an online program, you can listen to the lecturer, ask questions, and not have to worry about airline tickets, hotel expenses, and taking time off from work or away from the family.
The only downside to not going to a live CME program is that you do not have the opportunity to meet with dozens of exhibitors and get to find out about new and exciting products that might help our patients. You also do not have the opportunity to socialize with colleagues from all over and, in some cases, visit interesting resorts.
Unless state boards mandate that doctors must attend live CME conferences, I would not give up stock in Zoom and other online conference companies. They are all here to stay.

Richard Bloch, Executive Director of the Maryland Podiatric Medical Association, disagrees with my statement that there should "be an organized effort by our profession taking the National Board Examinations and/or acquiring a license comparable to other medical specialties (e.g., ophthalmology, ENT, etc.)." Furthermore, he describes podiatric physicians as being "generically licensed" and says that their specialization is by training, certification, and/or self-designation. He also concludes that “podiatrists elect to specialize by attending podiatric medical school and that the profession should be proud of its distinction in that regard.”
Mr. Bloch claims that whether the doctor has taken a particular exam is not something a patient looks at in deciding which doctor to...

I have been on-staff at my local hospital with full surgical and admitting privileges for over 30 years. I have served on many hospital committees. Several years ago, at a Bylaws Committee meeting, the question came-up about medical clearance on the day of (outpatient) surgery. We usually have 2 H&Ps for each patient - a "Podiatric H&P" and an H&P from the primary with medical clearance. On the day of surgery, we must sign-off that there have been no changes since the H&P and no medical contraindication to the surgery.
The hospital administration objected to podiatrists signing this statement. Since we do not have medical residents, it was suggested that the house PAs or NPs examine and sign-off on our patients. Parity with allopathic physicians? It was implied that podiatrists did not have parity with advanced practice providers. I argued the question and protected the rights of our podiatry staff.
