CT Podiatrists Explain Meaningful Use to Visiting Congressman

Congressman Jim Himes paid a visit recently to The Foot and Ankle Institute of Darien to learn about local businesses and the "meaningful use" federal grant program. Dr. Robert F. Weiss, also known as The Running Doctor, and his son, Dr. Scott H. Weiss, played host to Himes and shared information about their involvement in the meaningful use program.

(L-R) Dr. Scott Weiss, Congressman Jim Himes, and Dr. Robert F. Weiss

The Institute's use of electronic health records allows it to transmit patient information to hospitals and electronic prescriptions to pharmacies. The practice was founded in 1986 as The Podiatry Center of Darien by Dr. Robert Weiss. In 2008, his son joined the practice and the name was changed to The Foot and Ankle Institute of Darien.

High Heels Too Risky for Pregnant Women: Aussie Podiatrist

Brenden Brown from the Australian Podiatry Association has a bone to pick with high profile pregnant celebrities, who insist on wearing sky-high stilettos. According to Brown, they’re setting a bad example to other expecting moms. “We’ve recently heard news of a bag laden Jessica Simpson shopping in ‘sky high heels’ during her second pregnancy, and other high profile women donning their heels during various stages of pregnancy,” said Brown. “These are risky endeavors by public figures which tell other pregnant women it’s OK.”

Brenden Brown

“Wearing high heels at any time is an injury risk but this is significantly increased when pregnant, particularly in the later stages as you gain weight and body mass, which affects balance and puts stress on the feet and ankles,” he said.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW

MI Podiatrist Receives Nearly 6 years in Prison for Medicare Scam

A Fenton podiatrist who made more than $1 million treating senior citizens is going to prison for nearly six years for running what he admitted was a Medicare fraud scam. Richard Alan Behnan, 55, was sentenced to 55 months in prison in U.S. District Court Monday after previously pleading guilty to participating in a $1.6 million fraudulent medical billing scheme. He also was ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution to Medicare, and another nearly $200,000 to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)

Query: Elongated Halluces

This young lady presented with a very elongated hallux, bilaterally. As far as she knows, there is no genetic history. Her thumb to index finer length is normal. Her health is unremarkable. No history of any illness. She is having difficulty in finding footwear that can accommodate the shape of her foot, and she routinely trips.

Elongated Halluces

Due to the appearance of said digits, she will not take her shoes or socks off in public as she is embarrassed. As a child, she was heckled and still has the stigma even today. My question is: whether for cosmetic or for clinical reasons what would be the suggested course of correction for this young lady? A local orthopedist recommended a partial amputation.

QUERIES (NON-CLINICAL)

Can anyone recommend a quality board review course for ABPS recertification?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1

RE: Regranex Alternative? (Elliot Udell, DPM)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM

Today, I spoke with a representative from  Healthpoint, the company that recently bought Regranex. According to the person I spoke with, they moved their manufacturing to a new location and they need to satisfy certain FDA requirements before manufacturing more product. Hence, they are willing to dropship the remaining stock of Regranex to any pharmacy, but anything they have in stock will expire at the end of January. They do not have a firm date as to when the FDA will allow them to restart making the product. They hope this will be within a few months.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2

RE: Podiatrists and Flu Shots (Elliot Udell, DPM)
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

The last time the New York governor declared a flu emergency, we heard the same suggestions from podiatrists statewide. Due to scope of practice issues and other nonsensical reasons, podiatrists were not given the okay.

Unfortunately, even if we were given the okay, there is a more practical and business side of the questions surrounding flu vaccinations. According to an internist whom I am closely connected to, a solo practitioner cannot order only a few doses of flu vaccine for the few patients...

Editor's note: Dr. Kesselman's extended-length letter can be read here.

RE: HIPAA Security Rule and Windows XP (Al Musella, DPM)
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

When it comes to Java, I agree with Dr. Musella, 100%.  Most computer professionals recommended disabling Java months and months ago.

Where I don't agree with Dr. Musella is in his recommendation to move to Windows 8. Your decision between Windows 7 or 8 should be driven by your EMR and office management software companies, and what they recommend.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS)

RE: Medical School Entrance (Barry Mullen, DPM)
From: Brian Kiel, DPM

I must respond to Dr. Mullen's recent post regarding entrance to medical school. First of all, statistics show that approximately 45%  of medical school admissions are women, a fact that he left out of the equation. The remaining 55% are males of all ethnic backgrounds, however, only about 1.5% are African-American and about 20% are Hispanic and or Asian. That means that approximately 75% of the male applicants are white. Assuming all applicants are of equal or of near equal ability, it stands to reason that percentage-wise, fewer white males would be admitted.

To attribute the inability of white males to get into medical school to reverse racism is using it as a convienient excuse, but is personally offensive, and according to statistics of the Association of Ameican Medical Colleges, untrue. I am not calling Dr. Mullen a racist, as I am sure he is an honorable man, but I think that he is repeating an untrue, wide-spread assumption that needs to be challanged.
