IL Podiatrist Discusses Frostbite Prevention
As cold weather moves across several states, it’s important to stay safe from frostbite and other cold-related injuries like fractures. Baptist Health Wound Care provider and podiatrist Chad Bassi, DPM said one way to stay warm is to layer up on coats, gloves, and socks. He said under the right conditions, frostbite symptoms can appear within 20 minutes of being outside. Signs of frostbite include red or pale extremities and pain. In later stages, frostbite can make skin turn purple.

“Dress appropriately. Do not stay outside for extended periods of time. If you do feel like you are getting cold, come inside and warm up,” said Dr. Bassi. Bassi said burns from heaters and fireplaces are a concern during Winter as well, which is why he said to keep a barrier like pants or a blanket between yourself and heat sources.

TX Podiatrist and GSU Researcher Collaborate for 2024 ACSM Presentation
Li Li, PhD, a research professor in Georgia Southern University’s (GSU) Department of Health Sciences and Kinesiology, and Jeffrey Ross, DPM, MD, an associate professor at the Baylor College of Medicine’s Department of Surgery, Section of Vascular Surgery (as well as chief of podiatry in the Department of Surgery), met at last year’s American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Annual Meeting in Denver. Both attended the Biomechanics Interest Group meeting, at which Li received a Career Achievement Award.

These shared interests were so closely aligned that the pair soon decided to pursue a research collaboration, which has thus far culminated in a tutorial session titled “Postural and Gait Impairment among People with Diabetic Neuropathy and Potential Exercise as Intervention,” which was accepted for presentation at the 2024 ACSM Annual Meeting in Boston. Drs. Ross and Li discussed their partnership and work, the unique value of ACSM membership, and reasons why more MDs and PhDs should consider teaming up.

Inspired by childhood memories and a passion for locomotive history, Michael C. Andrews, DPM has assembled a fascinating model train depicting a large portion of California’s northern Central Valley. This nearly 2,000-square-foot model prominently features both Yuba City and Maryville, highlighting Binney Junction, and preserving a snapshot of the Yuba-Sutter region as it stood in the decades between 1940 and 1960.

Andrews, more often referred to as “Doc”, is a retired podiatrist who currently resides in south Yuba City. He first started collecting trains as a young child while his father worked as a manager for a mobile glass company. During that time, Andrews fondly remembers taking Sunday trips with his dad to the rail yards of the Sacramento Valley Station. “It was all steam then and you’d look out over the yards and see all the trains with a lot of smoke and steam,” said Andrews. “So that was my first interest in trains, which was really due to my dad.”

| OBITUARIES -PART 1 | |
RE: The Passing of John Robert Ziomek, DPM
Dr. John Ziomek, 69, passed away unexpectedly in Long Beach, California on January 6th, 2024. Dr. Ziomek attended the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM). While at CCPM, he was awarded the National Health Services Corps (NHSC) Scholarship, which exists to fulfill the goal of placing doctors in areas of healthcare shortages.

After receiving a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree, John set out to fulfill his 3-year commitment to the NHSC. One of his options to fulfill his commitment to the NHSC was to move to San Luis Obispo County, which was a perfect fit due to his love of the ocean. John served as the Grover Beach Planning Commissioner for 7.5 years, acting as Chairman for one year.

Dr. Ben Hara lived a wonderful life, passing at age 97. Ben practiced in the community next to mine in the San Gabriel Valley, California. He was always generous with his time and his expertise in practice management. Ben was a recognized speaker on podiatric management and gave willingly to our profession, our students, and our residents.
His office was always open for colleagues to learn about his success in podiatric medicine and surgery. Thank you Ben, for all you shared.

I too, like my classmate Glenn Shintaku, had the honor to spend a month in Dr. Hara's office as a senior in 1979. He taught me so much about office-based podiatric medicine and surgery, practice management, patient interaction skills, and a plethora of invaluable information that I took with me when I started practice. He was, as we say in Yiddish, a mensch (person of integrity, morality, dignity). Thank you Dr. Hara. RIP.

RE: The Passing of Ben Hara, DPM (Glenn Shintaku, DPM)
Billy Joel wrote the words and music to the very popular song, “Only the Good Die Young”. He wasn’t taking into account Ben Hara, DPM who passed away at the age of 97. Ben was an outstanding podiatrist and more importantly an outstanding human being. Our profession was blessed to have him around for so many productive years. I will always remember him as a dear friend and colleague.

I had the wonderful fortune of meeting and getting to know Dr. Ganley while I was a resident in Philadelphia, as well as an attending and on the faculty of the "Hershey Seminar" for years. He was a beacon of our profession. Attending the Hershey Seminar, Dr. Ganley was a member of a panel discussion regarding repair of hallux varus. The other members of the panel were recommending either hemi or total silicone implants. He stated a one word response, "Neither". He then had to expound further as the audience had questions. He described the Keller arthroplasty for bunion repair. I have utilized that procedure, especially for older patients.
I have used the "Ganley Splint" for pediatric metatarsus adductus, non-vertical talus flatfoot, and torsion deformities of the lower extremities. Dr. Ganley performed major tendon transfer surgery for drop foot on patients, which included a member of the medical staff of Dr. Ganley's hospital in Norristown, PA. Unfortunately, he left us far too early. I remember him as kind, knowledgeable, pleasant, opinionated in a non-confrontational manner, intelligent with an amazing memory.
I do have one wish passed on to me from Dr. Ganley. He often times stated that he would like to see a seminar in Ireland. That would be a great foundation to continue and enhance the legacy of James V. Ganley, DPM. The previous letters from leaders and members of our profession regarding Dr. Ganley are very much appreciated

RE: Outrageous Use of the Word "Podiatrist"
Kudos to Governor Ron DeSantis for not only publicizing our profession in a national debate, but also giving us new terminology for our podiatric medical dictionary. On Wednesday, DeSantis ridiculed Gov. Nikki Haley for “ballistic podiatry — shooting yourself in the foot.”
