MD Podiatrist Joins Total Foot Care
Alex Lakner, DPM recently joined the team at Total Foot Care in Greenbelt, Maryland, working alongside Richard Cohen, DPM and Jeffrey Steinberg, DPM. Dr. Lakner earned his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. He subsequently completed a podiatric surgical residency at Jefferson Health in New Jersey.

Dr. Lakner went on to complete a fellowship in multidisciplinary diabetic limb salvage and wound care at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in the Department of Vascular Surgery. He completed research focused on ulceration prevention, utilizing computer-assisted gait analysis as well as another study detailing new technology and the fabrication of an off-loading AFO device. He is board qualified in foot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.

Ways to Improve Patients’ Financial Literacy
Medical debt is of growing concern across the nation. Nearly 1-in-5 U.S. households has reported having some form of overdue medical debt. And it’s middle-class Americans who are struggling the most, with nearly 1 in 4 — or roughly 17 million people — having unpaid medical bills. Here are some ways healthcare providers and payers can make the financial experience easier for consumers,
2) Offer flexibility in payment methods and plans
With digital tools available, providers can offer multiple options to patients to facilitate payment, such as debit and credit cards, digital wallets, and payment plans. Giving patients the option to store credit card information securely with a “card-on-file” option avoids the need to enter their credit card number, expiration date, and security code for future transactions. Digital wallets are easily accessed on computers or smartphones, eliminating the need for consumers to carry a traditional wallet or credit or debit cards.
Digital tools also make it easy and convenient to enable patients to set up their own payment plans. These plans can take into account the total amount due, patient preferences for monthly payment amount and date, and the length of the term.

Thank you Allen, for so illustrating the work and life of Jim Ganley. I was very close to Jim and Anne when I was in school in Philadelphia. I spent the summer between my 2nd and 3rd years with Jim at Penhurst as well as in his office and I worked for Jim between my 3rd and 4th year at PCPM. I made appointments and typed his letters as well as being in the office to observe. We spent much of the time about the issues that Allen spoke about. I do not have to say what this experience by my mentor in podiatry meant.

RE: The Passing of Samuel J. Spadone, DPM
It is my sad duty to inform you of the passing of former TUSPM Instructor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Samuel J. Spadone, DPM on January 10th. Dr. Spadone was a graduate of the former Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (PCPM, now TUSPM) and joined TUSPM’s full-time faculty on November 1, 1998.

He served in many capacities up to his retirement on June 30, 2023, including Chairman of the Department of Community Health and Aging, Assistant Dean for Institutional Research and Program Integrity, and most recently, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. On behalf of Dean John Mattiacci, the Administrative Council and the entire TUSPM community, we offer Dr. Spadone’s family our heartfelt condolences for their loss.

RE: The Passing of Ben Hara, DPM
It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Ben Hara, DPM at the age of 97 on January 5, 2024. Many young podiatrists may not know who Ben Hara was, but he was one of the pioneering Asian podiatrists not only in California but the United States. He was a maven of practice management and at one time had the largest podiatry office in the U.S.

He once told me, "There are two types of people in the world, givers and takers. At the end of your life, which one will people remember you as?" Ben definitely was a giver to our profession with his time, talents, and expertise. In life, he shared freely his deep Christian faith and love for the Lord Jesus Christ. Our condolences to his daughters Val and Renae.

Dr. Irving Schneider, 94, a long-time resident of New Hartford, passed away on December 11, 2023, surrounded by his family in his home in Boca Raton, FL. He received a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Long Island University College of Podiatry.

Dr. Schneider first came to Utica in 1957 when he stepped in for a podiatrist on a brief six-week assignment. He set up his own podiatry practice, and he and his wife created a home for the family in New Hartford, NY.

Ted was my father's partner in practice during the early days of their careers. Ted, my father Merton Root, and several other podiatrists in the San Jose area were not only colleagues, they were close friends who regularly socialized and spent countless hours together on fishing trips, playing bridge, and many other activities. My heart goes out to Ted's three daughters and their families, but I'm sure they are comforted by the fact that Ted had a long and productive life.

Theodore “Teddy” Deffinger was a clinical instructor of mine at the California College of Podiatric Medicine. He was quick witted, intelligent and loved by all the students at CCPM. He was an amazing clinician gifted with the ability to teach from the most fundamental to the most advanced levels of our clinical curriculum. He had a wonderful sense of humor coupled with a deep dedication to the podiatric education of the student body. God Bless! The class of 1962 will never forget you.
