Don't Trust Gradings of Nail Salons: TN Podiatrist

If a salon has a high grade, can you really trust it is a clean and safe place for you to go? "Don't get too caught up with the grade of the salon," warned Dr. Robert Spalding. "You need to actually make your own identifications as far as disinfection practices." Spalding is a podiatrist in Chattanooga, TN, and he travels the country urging state boards of cosmetology to raise their nail salon standards.

Dr. Robert Spalding

"Up to 75 percent of the nail salons in this country are not following their state standards for disinfection," said Spalding. "I find it very alarming and it's very concerning." Spalding has written a book entitled Death By Pedicure: Dirty Secrets of Nail Salons, which documents some of the unsanitary practices occurring in U.S. salons. Some states have even reviewed the book to identify areas where they need to raise the standards in their state.

Price is Not the Sole Factor in Buying Children's Shoes: Aussie Podiatrist

With only weeks before the first school bell sounds for the year, The Sunday Telegraph roadtested five pairs of shoes of varying prices to show which were a value for the money. Centre for Podiatric Medicine podiatrist Christopher Camplin said the big discount department stores like Target and Big W were bringing competition to the market. "You don't always have to purchase the most expensive shoe to get good quality," Mr. Camplin said. "The other brands are putting up some good competition."

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters

Bret Ribotsky: Having practiced for 50 years as a DPM, do you see a future where all podiatrists are MDs and DOs?

Dr. Oliver Foster

Oliver Foster: I see us as MDs in the future, but it will take a lot of change. I believe it will start with the social changes that are going on now. At one point, being gay was thought as being the worst thing in the world. As you look around the world today, you see changes going on all over. It starts with the younger folks. Older folks are often more resistant to change.

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guest has not yet been confirmed. You can register for future events by clicking here

RESPONSES / COMMENTS - (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 2

RE: The Self Esteem of Podiatry 2013 (Robert Kornfeld, DPM)
From: Gino Scartozzi, DPM

I would like to take an opportunity to respond and further clarify my position in my earlier post for Dr. Kornfeld. In no way would I advocate that any practitioner, or business owner for that matter, routinely be cavalier regarding whether one gets paid or not for services, if he intends to remain in business.

The solution is quite simple, the decision to provide treatment procedures for a patient should not be contingent on where the source of payment will be coming from. It is not the practitioner who is responsible to routinely write-off services that are not covered by insurance carriers. In fact, I feel that it is the responsibility of the practitioner to...

RE: Display Your Colors (Hal Ornstein, DPM)
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

This smacks of nationalism. You cannot require employees to display your colors! And it you do so yourself, does that make you a better American than someone who does not display your colors. Want to do some good? Don't charge veterans for care. They are the ones who have given.

RE: The Residency Shortage
From: Tahir Khan, DPM

This month’s Podiatry Management magazine includes an article that I authored titled “The Residency Shortage and How to Succeed.” This article provides "Top Ten Pearls from the Residents and Residency Program Directors” to podiatric medical students on how to successfully secure a residency program in these tough and challenging times. I suggest all current podiatric medical students and past graduates searching for a residency program to please read and benefit from the article.

RE: NY Podiatrist Advises Against Cosmetic Foot Surgery
From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM

The "argument" several doctors have made about cosmetic surgery and its applicability to podiatry does miss several points, one of them being so-called "preventive surgery." An example of this in podiatry would be a surgical procedure on a frank deformity in say a diabetic or pre-diabetic in the effort to reduce the risk of that deformity, while presently asymptomatic of causing dangerous problems in the future. This might be a hammertoe that, although it does not have a corn or area of inflammation on it now, might very well be dangerous in the future.

There are other examples of this in general medicine. One of them is the extremely rare condition called "body dysmorphic syndrome." This strange disease results in the patient not seeing a part of his/her anatomy as a legitimate "part of his body." This causes great anxiety and it is not...
