Malta Podiatrist Who Spent 5 days in a Coma Appreciates Life More
Joe Sciortino, a 29-year-old podiatrist, spoke about the changes he went through after a traumatic experience almost took his life, following an accident he had at age 11. In an interview with Newsbook Malta, he explained how the incident shaped his identity and shared the importance of perspective in his life, what he has learned throughout the years, and the passion he has for what he does.

Among the challenges he faced following the accident, Sciortino said that he probably experienced post-traumatic stress disorder – PTSD and struggled in school because he could not focus. However, he emphasized that he did not give up. He said that it was a result of this that he learned to appreciate and value work and community, while recounting that this helped him later on in his studies and career.

5 Practical Tips to Reduce Denials, Improve Cash Flow
Technology is often the go-to solution for healthcare administrative workflow woes, including billing. Still, it’s just one of several practical steps that can deliver tangible impact, many of which require little to no capital investment. Here are five of the most effective.
1B. Volume and activity KPIs reflect billing throughput and help practices track overall billing activity and trends. Total charges and payments reflect revenue flow and growth, while the number of claims submitted indicates billing volume and practice productivity. A/R aging, which breaks down unpaid claims by the number of days they sit in A/R, suggests a problem with collections if the number gets too high, particularly when it slips over 90 days. In what is a sign of the times, however, few healthcare providers are performing at the once-industry standard of maintaining less than 20% of A/R at 90 days or higher. Instead, the average now is 35% or higher.

What Is a Good Inheritance? Six Great Assets to Inherit
Leaving a good inheritance takes planning. If you want to help your heirs, these are the best assets to leave them.
1. Cash - “Cash is king when it comes to leaving an inheritance,” says Neil V. Carbone, trusts and estates partner at Farrell Fritz in New York. “It’s the simplest asset to deal with in terms of a transfer.” Your heirs immediately know how much it's worth, can easily divide it according to the terms in your will, and don’t have to do any hard work to access it, versus something like real estate, which can take months to sell. Are you wondering if it's better to inherit a house or money? Money is certainly easier and more accessible.
Michael Romero, President of Argent Trust Oklahoma at Argent Financial Group, advised that if you have cash saved in several different banks, you can make life even easier for your heirs by consolidating, especially in your later retirement years. “Every bank could have different rules for distributing an account, so reducing the number could speed up the transfer.” He warned, though, to make sure you stay within the FDIC, NCUA, and SIPC limits to keep your bank deposits safe. The FDIC insures up to $250,000 in individual deposit accounts and up to $250,000 for each person’s share of joint accounts, and the NCUA insures deposits at federally insured credit unions up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured credit union, for each account ownership category.

Lessons Learned From My First Time in the Operating Room
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
2. Introduce Yourself to the Scrub Tech and Nurses - When entering the OR, introduce yourself to the scrub tech. Mention whether you have prior scrubbing experience and ask if it's acceptable for you to assist with tasks like grabbing things from the mayo stand when they're occupied. Direct communication is always appreciated.
3. Familiarize Yourself with Room Setup - Learn how to set up an OR. Different places may have varying protocols, but basic tasks like glove and gown retrieval, assisting with patient preparation, rolling a towel for a bump, grabbing a tourniquet, preparing local anesthesia, and tying gowns are easy ways to contribute. Always help with room turn over - You are in no way too good to grab a mop/wipe and help! You want to get the next case started too (some places do not want your help with this and that is A-OK! It’s a good time to eat your protein bar). Be helpful, but do not be weird.

RE: UHC Used "Aggressive" Tactics To Falsely Report Patient Data to CMS
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
In today's Becker's HealthCare, there is a report that UHC used aggressive tactics to bloat and inflate UHC data in order to up the risk assessment of patients. While stopping short of accusing UHC of illegal action, Chuck Grassey, US Senator from Iowa, stated, "Bloated federal spending to UnitedHealth Group is not only hurting the Medicare Advantage program, it’s harming the American taxpayer."
In plain simple terms, the status quo of how CMS pays Medicare Advantage (MA) plans is simply obsolete and must go the way of the Pony Express. It clearly continues to invite fraud and abuse without any signs of let up. There needs to be a better way to compensate for these plans and show them the door and/or a view from behind bars. On a similar note: A few weeks ago, Horizon Blue Cross pleaded guilty to committing $100M worth of fraud by violating the New Jersey False Claims Act. If medical providers committed the amount of fraud and abuse that many of the insurers have committed, they would have had their billing privileges restricted/removed and/or seen how well an orange jumpsuit fits.
In conversations with every medical specialist encountered, we all agree that it's time that the same level of justice be meted out to the insurance industry and their MBAs in the executive suite, who commit fraud.
Paul Kesselman, DPM, Oceanside, NY

RE: The Quest for Non-Covered Services
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM
Many podiatrists are working hard to find as many non-covered services as possible to add into their practice to improve income over the abysmal insurance payments. And I completely understand that. Surviving on what insurance is willing to pay is a huge challenge. To that end, we have lasers, shockwave, regenerative medicine injection procedures, peptides, and supplements to name a few that have become very popular as an adjunct to covered services. And there is no doubt that all of these modalities can be extremely helpful when used on the right patient at the right time.
The trap many are falling into is recommending these treatments without fully understanding the mechanism of action. Again, I have no problem with improving your practice’s bottom line. This is how we make a living and we all have a right to make a really good one. But we have an obligation to our patients to recommend treatments in a...

From: Howard Zlotoff, DPM
Dr. Santiago’s article about preparation before going into the operating room reminds me of an experience I had 45 years ago. I was one of twelve first-year residents at the Northlake surgical program directed by Lowell Weil, DPM in a Chicago suburb. From these twelve, two were selected to go on to become second-year residents, me and Don Arenson. We were thrilled and our egos were puffed up as we strutted around the hospital.
My first week as chief resident, I was scheduled to scrub-in with Dr. Weil to assist to perform an Evan’s calcaneal procedure. As Dr. Santiago mentioned, I thoroughly prepared the night before and read how to do the procedure. Avoiding vital structures, creating the proper bone cuts to effect correction and then fixate the osteotomy with bone staples were branded into...
