Members of the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine (TUSPM) Class of 2026 gathered at the School during the first week of the spring semester, wearing their new scrubs. Ms. SuEllen Dercher, President of Gordon Labs, graciously sponsored the student scrubs, as she does every year, along with Mr. Ric Boggs, President of Gill Podiatry.

In their first year, students are required to wear scrubs in their general anatomy and lower extremity anatomy classes, which is an imperative experience in their pursuit in becoming podiatrists. Similarly, throughout the first year at TUSPM, students are afforded the unique opportunity to work with standardized patients learning how to do basic history and physical exams for each organ system.

The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 37th Annual Student Writing Competition.

All papers MUST be non-technical in nature. Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.

First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

Query: Request for 33 Charts for “Risk Adjustment”
I received a record request today for 33 charts for “risk adjustment.” This is the largest request I have ever received. Texas law allows me to charge for the records, and I charge up to the allowable limit. I was just curious, what is the largest request others have received?

I have had the luxury of using the Lunula laser for the last four months. First, it has no heat and therefore no pain. Second, the patient places his/her foot into the unit. My medical assistant turns on the machine and walks away. It requires no supervision, no monitoring, and no doctor time trying to laser every bit of each affected nail. Therefore, it is incredibly efficient.
Patients come back two months after their last treatment to repeat fungal testing (to make sure there is no residual/active fungal presence). Those who have retested were negative 80% of the time. This evaluation includes only 20 patients so the sample is small. Nonetheless, patients have been delighted with the ease of treatment. I am thrilled with the efficiency of the machine. So far, results seem to be stellar. I have no financial interest in the company. I am just impressed!

I was using the device on a lease type of arrangement. I have had no success that I can speak of. I think in my own experience, oral terbinafine is the best treatment for fungal toenails. Thank you for reminding me to return the laser.

Dr. Kesselman has opined that not all podiatrists were offered the opportunity to have a residency, or were undertrained in their residency program.
I take the following position from my personal observations and experience. Concerning opportunity, everyone from my generation of podiatrists had the opportunity to train if they wanted such training. When I graduated, there were only enough residencies for 50% of the class. Some in my class did not want to waste time on a residency and went into practice, some decided a preceptorship was enough. Others like myself had to re-apply until we got a residency program. While it was not easy waiting around for a program, in the end it was worth it as I ended up doing three years of residency training with some of the best surgeons of our time at two different programs, Drs. Lowell Scott Weil and Orlando Mercado.
So what I am saying is if you wanted to be trained, it was there. You just had to make the sacrifices for the training, which some of us did. Everything we do has consequences; taking the easy road or hard road all have their consequences but saying that we were not offered opportunities is just not true.
