STATE PODIATRY NEWS

IN Podiatrist Re-Appointed to State Podiatry Board

Gov. Mitch Daniels made dozens of last-minute appointments to various boards and commissions Friday – a few days before his successor takes office. Among the list was Dr. Vincent Coda of Kendallville who was re-appointed to the Board of Podiatry Examiners.

Dr. Vincent Coda

Dr. Coda earned a Doctorate of Podatric Medicine and Surgery (DPM) from Illinois College of Podatric Medicine in Chicago and received his surgical training at South Bend Osteopathic Hospital, South Bend, IN. He is board certified by the American Board of Lower Extremity Surgeons and the American Academy of Pain Management. He is former president of the Midwest Podiatry Conference.

WA Podiatrist Recommends Stretching Before and After Walking

When walking for exercise, it’s important to stretch before and after you walk. "Follow the proper stretching techniques and remember to stretch slowly, without bouncing. You only need to stretch far enough to feel your muscles elongating, not until you feel pain." says  Seattle podiatrist, Dr. Lotchie Kerch.

Dr. Lotchie Kerch

Kersh recommends a wall push as a calf stretch. "Lean into a wall with your feet about 3-4 feet away from the wall, bracing yourself with your arms. Bend one knee and point it toward the wall. Keep your back leg straight with your foot flat, your head up, and your toes pointed straight ahead. Keeping your back straight, move hips forward until you feel a stretch. Hold for 20 seconds and repeat with the other leg," says Kerch.

Study Finds Docs Suceptible to Pharm Lunches

The doctors who said back in 2012 that drug company-sponsored lunches couldn't sway their prescribing are being undercut by a study published in JAMA's Internal Medicine.

Among the findings: giving doctors meals at workplace “up-to-date” meetings, where reps and physicians talk about products, increases the likelihood that doctors will prescribe branded drugs over generics. The researchers found that tossing in a few samples further enhances a physician's brand bias.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY

Display Your Colors

A simple way to recognize our great way of life as an American and pay respect to the our flag is to add an American flag pin or patch to all the physicians' and assistants' lab coats. The flags should be worn on the left side or arm.

RE: Alternative to Lazerformalyde (Billie Bondar, DPM)
From: Avi Kornbluth

Gordon Labs makes 2 products: Formadon, which is 10% formaldyhyde - which is the same strength as Lazerformalyde. They also make Forma-Ray which is 20% formaldyhyde. Both come with a sponge tip applicator for easy application. These are available through all podiatry dealers, or by calling Gordon Labs.

RE: The Self-Esteem of Podiatry 2013 (Gino Scartozzi, DPM)
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM

As I read both Dr. Sasiene's comments and Dr. Scartozzi's response, it occurs to me that the actual pink elephant still goes ignored. While I understand and appreciate Dr. Scartozzi's opinion that we must continue to support the APMA as our professional representation, this does not address the BIG picture. To me, the BIG picture here is the malignant complacency of my fellow colleagues who would rather not bother with the pink elephant and just go down with the ship, because that is "altruism."

So, who cares if we don't get paid. Afterall, as doctors we should be willing to provide our services for the benefit of mankind. Right? Sounds great, but altruism does not pay the bills. I find it terribly disheartening that a situation as critical as the one we face has ignited no proactive discussion. And by the way, Dr. Scartozzi, all of the downgrading of our profession has happened right in front of APMA, out in the open for all to see and experience. I remain a member, but totally understand Dr. Sasiene's frustration and his decision to relinquish his membership.

RE: Confusion Over New AFO Height Requirements (Josh White, DPM, CPed)
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM

I respectfully disagree with the recent letter by Josh White (owner of SafeStep). He and other advertisers are advising that everything is okay with the AFOs that their companies provide to the podiatry community. Whether that is true or false is subject to the answers to the questions I have outlined below.

Q: Is it mandatory that the PDAC verify custom (and pre-fabricated AFOs)?

A: In a previous letter, I advised that the answer to #1 is NO with the exception of devices which meet the criteria for...

Editor's note: Dr. Kesselman's extended-length letter appears here. Dr. White intended the following to be added to his previous note.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS)

RE: The Residency Shortage (Richard H. Lanham, DPM)
From: Barry Mullen, DPM

With respect to Dr. Lanham's recent post, I offer the following FACTS: 1) My son's best friend graduated Vanderbilt University in 2012 with a 3.9 GPA. He is a very personable kid. He scored a 37 on his MCAT, a PHENOMENAL score! He received one medical school acceptance at UMDNJ (the state school where he's from) and was wait-listed at just one other school, which ultimately accepted him. 12 other medical schools, including Vanderbilt, where he matriculated as an undergrad, rejected him!

2) My son graduated Emory University in 2012 with a 3.8. He took one "gap" year and has applied for the 2013 medical school entrance class. His MCAT score is lower, but still respectable. Thus far, he has been granted just one interview and...

RE: NY Podiatrist Advises Against Cosmetic Foot Surgery (Richard Frost, DPM)
From: Dennis Shavelson, DPM

Dr. Frost is now expanding cosmetic surgery to prevention, performance enhancement, quality of life, fall prevention, obesity, and other areas of debate which have our profession divided. Anyone who insists that they are 100% right in these debates is destructive to our profession's longevity and future, and should temper their position.

Waiting for a chief complaint, symptoms, deformity, degeneration, etc. before operating all have their place in podiatry. However, more and more patients are seeking proactive types of non-insurance-bound care, and are willing to pay for these services.

I don’t understand why those who are insurance-bound and controlled by a “chief complaint” mentality must try to reduce the practice of other interventions by creating a sense of false caution. The public and the medical community know that there are also complications and failures when treating complaints as well.
