Feet are a Mirror of Your Overall Health: UK Podiatrist
Emma McConnachie, a podiatrist, is urging people not to neglect their feet as they can do much more than just be used for standing, walking, and running. If you pay enough attention, they can also be a huge indicator of your overall health. It turns out that your feet can show signs of many major undiagnosed health problems, including stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and melanoma.
|
Emma McConnachie |
Signs of circulatory issues include observing a pronounced swelling in your feet or a mottled coloring - unusual patches, spots, or blotches. Emma said, "Changes may occur in only one limb or in both. If you notice any changes in the size or color of your feet and ankles, then contact your GP or podiatrist."

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY |
5 Ways to Retain Great Physicians
Healthcare organizations invest significant time, energy, and money into hiring physicians. But according to Douglas Farrago, MD, the author of The Hospital Guide to Physician Retention, very few invest adequate resources into keeping physicians. Here are some steps to take.
4. Assign or hire a staff member as a physician liaison
Douglas Farrago strongly advocates that every practice employ a physician liaison to support doctors in the group. A physician liaison can help orient new hires, provide resources and support, and act as an anchor for doctors in the group. Farrago recalls Jane, a former nurse who worked as a physician liaison in one of his practices. “She was wonderful. She would get you your white coat, and make sure that you had what you needed.” Farrago points out that a liaison’s job is not as a manager. “This person doesn’t need to be involved in negotiation or employment quarrels. They are just there to help with anything that the group of doctors need.”

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1A |
From: Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH
Based on the recent concerns about attracting students and making a living, I would like to throw a life raft out to the future podiatrists and the current ones as well. To be successful as a concierge podiatrist, I have had to offer services that no one else offers or services that many might think is below them.
Let me start off by saying I offer medical pedicures. I consider myself an expert in the old world of performing C&C. We get approximately 2 to 3 new patients every day. While we charge cash, and the fee is rather low, we offer a very needed service that people want and need. A certain percentage of these patients need and will pay out-of-pocket for other services, most commonly orthotics and fungus nail treatments.
Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA
|
|
RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 B |
From: Robert Kornfeld, DPM
Dr. Udell asks, "What are the main areas bothering podiatrists?" I think this cannot possibly be in debate - it is the ridiculously low insurance reimbursements and the insane prior approval hurdles. Most podiatrists that I speak to enjoy treating patients. But they ABHOR what they are required to do and how little they get paid after so much training and experience.
I am PGY-44. The issues have not changed. We have been battling insurance companies for decades and LOSING. Continued negotiations will not make anything better. Just look at your Medicare reimbursement levels for 2025. Is there any other profession that continually has its earning power diminish year after year?
So here I am again...encouraging those who really wish to enjoy practice autonomy and eliminate the middlemen to stop telling themselves they can't create a successful direct-pay practice, or at least a hybrid practice. You absolutely can! Your current patient population is not who will honor you with direct payments. They come to you because you accept insurance. But there are thousands of patients in your area who are completely fed up with the system. And they definitely will come to you with the right branding and marketing. Remember, anything you tell yourself becomes your reality.
Robert Kornfeld, DPM, NY, NY

|
RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICARE) |
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
When Medicare and other insurance companies begin to cut fees paid to physicians, we might feel the pain, but the ones most adversely affected are our patients. Remember, we are not only doctors but also patients.
Except for the subset of the patient population that are also caregivers, the average "Tom, Dick or Harry" going for medical care might not realize why many physicians are spending less time with them and are often ordering more high-end tests from labs, hospitals, and radiological centers that are affiliated in some way with the hospital or corporation that now employs the physicians.
The more Medicare and other insurance companies continue to cut back, the problem of America providing optimum healthcare to patients will be less and less.
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS) |
From: Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH
I agree with Dr. Musser. Going barefoot in theory may be a great idea but in reality, it is not practical for the general population due to the increased incidence of injuries, etc. which we all see from going barefoot. The cons far outweigh the pros of going barefoot.
Ivar E. Roth DPM, MPH, Newport Beach, CA
