Fired Podiatrist’s Age Bias Allegations Fail in Rusty Instrument Suit
A former podiatrist fired after a superior found rusty instruments in her workspace failed to establish the City of Newark actually fired her because of her age, a federal judge said. Patricia W. Bennett, DPM worked as a part-time podiatrist for Newark for more than three years before her 2018 firing,
The ex-foot doctor, who was in her 60s when she lost her job with the city’s health department, didn’t point to any facts showing her termination was more likely than not based on impermissible factors such as age, the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey said Tuesday. The City presented rusty instruments as legitimate firing reason.

Ways to Improve Patients’ Financial Literacy
Medical debt is of growing concern across the nation. Nearly 1-in-5 U.S. households has reported having some form of overdue medical debt. And it’s middle-class Americans who are struggling the most, with nearly 1 in 4 — or roughly 17 million people — having unpaid medical bills. Here are some ways healthcare providers and payers can make the financial experience easier for consumers,
1. Operationalize transparency
Cost transparency is expected in most industries and providing helpful cost information to patients will improve their experience and help ease financial concerns. Cost estimation tools can create clear projections that enable patients to know what will be owed at or before the time of service. For scheduled services, the check-in process can provide an opportunity to confirm several key pieces of data: demographic information, insurance and benefits coverage, co-pay and service amount estimate based on visit type.

Theodore L. Deffinger, DPM, 94, passed away on 12/27/23. He served in the National Guard, 1947-1951. He graduated from the California College of Podiatric Medicine, with honors, in 1954.

Ted thoroughly enjoyed a long practice of podiatric medicine, retiring after nearly 40 years. An avid outdoorsman, Ted enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, and scuba diving. His greatest joy was spending time with his beloved family and friends.

I had an unusual relationship with Dr. Ganley. Since I was an OCPM graduate, I did not know him as a professor. He was a personal friend of Dr. Chauncey Roelofs, my first employer in Lansdale. Like myself, Dr. Ganley's first job out of the Navy was in Dr. Roelofs' original office in Phoenixville. He was introduced as a friend. We worked together training residents at our respective hospitals in Norristown.
His "residency" was the best fellowship a student could have at that time and his former residents have all had great success in our profession by following his lessons in podiatry and in life. As CPME requirements for residencies became stricter, ...

Dr. Jacobs’ post to pay tribute to Dr. James Ganley is an absolute pleasure to read. Thank you Dr. Jacobs for taking the time to articulate this and to Dr. Block for publishing and helping it gain some traction and attention, so that many have the ability to read it. There are a lot of lessons in it, and Dr. Jacobs' beautifully touches the surface describing attributes, nuances, and the ability to get to feel who Dr. Ganley was, and why he is recognized as an icon. Humble with humility, brilliant, without exception compassionate for others, a sense of balance in life, and ability to enjoy other aspects outside of his profession... sailing being just one of them.
One important point that comes out as you read the tribute is how much Dr. Ganley appreciated and enjoyed being a podiatrist. There's too much negativity today about our profession and...

It is hard to believe that 15% of respondents so far do not give a year-end bonus to their staff. Generally, our staffs are not so generously paid that they don't need financial recognition for their good work at least once a year. Praise is good, but cash is even better.
It was always my feeling that if each of my employees was not worthy of a raise each year and a bonus each year, they were not worthy of my employment. Everyone should do better each year. If your practice income has not increased in a given year, don't take it out on the staff. Look inward and see how you can do better.
