Dr. Robert and Sandra Snyder Fund Awards First Scholarship
Beverly Clayton, DPM is the first recipient of a scholarship from the Dr. Robert and Sandra Snyder Wound Management and Research Endowment Fund. The endowment fund awards Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine (BUSPM) students $5,000 to attend a professional conference of their choice that is related to wound management and limb preservation.

As an endowment fund recipient, Dr. Clayton plans to attend the Diabetic Foot Conference (DFCon), a foot conference designed for those who diagnose and manage the diabetic foot. There she will be able to network with world-renowned clinician scientists working on cutting-edge technologies. Additionally, she has proposed a research question to examine how the use of ultrasonic therapy increases blood flow for wound care management.

MD Podiatrist Provides Test to Determine When It's Time to Replace Sneakers
Did you know that working out in old sneakers can do more harm to your body than good? According to podiatrist Priya Parthasarathy, DPM, you should test your sneakers to see if it is time for new ones. "Most experts say [you should replace shoes after every] 300 to 500 miles, but most people don't keep track of the mileage they put on their sneakers," Dr. Parthasarathy told Good Morning America.

"I tell my patients to try to twist or fold your shoe in half like a sandwich. If you are able to do that or come close to it, then it is time to replace your sneakers. With a new supportive sneaker, there should be some give near the forefoot but it definitely should not be able to fold in half," Parthasarathy added.

NJ Podiatrist Wins Silver Medal in Wine Label Competition
It’s that time of year again — time to celebrate those home winemakers who put as much effort into creating labels to decorate the outside of their bottles as they do creating the wine inside of them. The 23rd annual WineMaker Amateur Label Contest attracted hundreds of submissions from around the world, giving the judging panel of WineMaker staff the pleasure of viewing a wide assortment of creativity. This year's silver medal was awarded to John Cozzarelli, DPM of Nutley, NJ.

Dr. Cozzarelli has been creating labels for his homemade wines for decades, telling us he has designed around 200 labels in total! “Each year myself and my sons make approximately 10 different wines. I then must come up with a design,” he said. The labels generally use borrowed artwork, but where John gets the most enjoyment is airbrushing and selecting fonts and colors for his label. The way his last name appears to float from the label caught all of the judges’ attention in this design.

4 Ways to Improve the Patient Experience for Older Patients
Improving the patient experience is not only for enhancing retention and care but also for bolstering population health and reducing the cost of medical care. Here are four steps you can take at your practice to make that change:
4. Improve communication with patients - Older patients may have difficulty communicating with you because of hearing loss, vision problems, and other age-related issues. A caring approach can improve communication with older patients by letting them know you are listening and understanding what they are saying.
It is essential to lead with a person-centered attitude in encounters with patients and your employees, as a culture often trickles from the top down. Answer the phone promptly, introduce yourself to patients, and be helpful and willing to answer all their questions. If they seem restless, be reassuring. If they are worried, be comforting and confident. At the end of your interaction with the patient, be sure to ask if there is anything else you can do for them.

I know that there is a movement to obtain parity with the medical profession. But I do not think that kissing the butt of the AMA is really the way to do it. I believe that making sure that a podiatrist is recognized as a physician and surgeon of the foot in every state is the way to achieve parity as seen by the general public. I know that this came about in Ohio in the 1970s. If podiatrists want to get into an interesting career, they should become lobbyists!

While I understand the need for board certification, this question raises a problem for many podiatrists who were not afforded the opportunity to have a residency and learned under the tutelage of others. Or those who had a one or two year residency, which unlike the current model, did not provide adequate training of surgical reconstruction of the ankle. Again, these individuals also took courses and studied with other talented surgeons who taught these procedures to them.
Currently, ABFAS does not afford an alternative pathway to achieve certification in rearfoot/ankle reconstructive surgery because of their requirements unless one has had three- or four-year residency with cases involving...
