Diabetics Urged to Inspect Their Feet Daily: APMA President
The new year is bringing a reminder about what diabetes can do to your feet. Dr. Phillip Ward, the president of the American Podiatric Medical Association, says seniors with diabetes need to keep a close eye on their feet for a number of issues. He wants diabetics to look at the bottom of their feet every day, and see a doctor if there is pain.

Dr. Phillip Ward |
You can end up losing your feet or parts of them if you have diabetes and don't take care of it. Dr. Ward says studies show that podiatric medical care can reduce amputation rates by as much as 85 percent.

RE: Kudos to PICA
From: Daniel Chaskin, DPM
What company has a podiatrist as wonderful as Ross Taubman, who has his phone number posted so that he (or his staff) will pick up the phone and answer a policyholder's questions? Did you ever consider that the reason for podiatric malpractice insurance goes far beyond just protection against being sued. What about administrative coverage? What about all the risk management tools and webinars? What about that caring risk management department to answer your questions? I only hope more podiatrists begin to understand that PICA is out to help us. Thank you PICA.

From: Michael Forman, DPM
Dr. Scholl's should be allowed to advertise "custom-fit orthotics" if they are really custom made. The question is - is an impression made from standing on a mat a legitimate custom orthotic? How many DPMs sell custom orthotics using this method for construction and diagnosis?

From: Jordan Sheff, DPM
Regarding the recent survey about government initiatives affecting healthcare - I wasn't surprised by the results of the poll - I wonder if anyone plans to share these poll results with the government? Shouldn't they know what their initiatives are doing to healthcare?

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 1 | |
From: Alan Sherman, DPM, Boca Raton, FL
In reference to the story published in issue #5,573 of PM News about the DOJ investigating podiatric residency programs for advertising that resident candidates must be U.S. citizens, I’ve got a few things to say. First, what is wrong with this country? Residency programs are funded by CMS. If the government is paying for post-graduate education of doctors, and there is enough demand by tax-paying U.S. citizens (or the children of tax payers), why should any non-citizens be offered spots? These programs are very competitive as is, even without non-citizens being considered. This sounds like the kind of hyper-liberal political correctness that has plagued our government.
Now, lest I be accused of swinging the pendulum too far in the other direction, I am for making the lives of immigrant families easier and giving them help in melding into American culture. But I am also for paying one’s dues, and paying taxes and earning citizenship are the dues that I think are owed us by immigrants before they are given privileges like federal government funded medical education. And I think citizens should be given priority when limited resources are given out.
Alan Sherman, DPM, Boca Raton, FL

From: Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM
Sometimes, when I read about politics, I am incredulous. No matter which side of Obamacare you are on, submitting legislation asking a sitting president to repeal his own legislation strikes most of us as a preposterous waste of legislative time and energy. Don't they have OTHER things to do? Those against Obamacare surely must have made a simple "count" of potential votes to over-ride the veto. It the votes were not there, and my understanding is that they were not, why submit the bill to him?
Some DPMs support and some regret ACA. But we don't see any reason why legislators have to waste theirs (and our) time with useless demonstrations of political separation. These kinds of behaviors well mark the reasons why so few of us have any respect for our sitting legislators, on either side of the aisle.
Michael M. Rosenblatt, DPM, San Jose, CA

RE: Outrageous Shoes of the Day
|
|
Perfect for a stroll in the Botanical Gardens? |
These shoes are inspired by the flower 'Hana Lotus'. For a long time, this flower stays at the bottom of the lake in the mud. Then it continues to grow to the surface of the water where it blooms into this large flower. In the Buddhist community, it appears as the pedestal of the Buddha.
