OH Podiatrist Discusses Treatment of Onychomycosis
“Once nails start to display changes, it is important to attempt treatment as soon as possible to give the best attempt to improve the appearance of the nail,” says Mark J. Mendeszoon, DPM, a podiatrist at Precision Orthopaedic Specialties in Ohio. If the cause is a fungus, topical anti-fungal medications may show some signs of improvement, but seldom eradicate the condition.

“Oral anti-fungal medications could be more successful in improving and curing the problem, but liver enzyme blood work testing is mandatory as these medications are broken down in the liver,” says Dr. Mendeszoon. “Those folks with liver issues, on cholesterol medications, or even folks who drink alcohol may not be able to take these medications.” He notes that besides oral medications, laser therapy may also be utilized for naill improvments.

RE: The Passing of Herbert Jackson, DPM
Dr. Herbert Jackson, 91, transitioned at home in the care of Hospice. He was a corporal assigned to 8th Army 802nd Engr. Aviation Bn. Co. B, and served from December 1951 to December 1952. He graduated from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine. He practiced podiatry for 39 years before retiring. He was a member of the American Podiatry Medical Association and founding member of the National Podiatry Medical Association.

LV had an incredible soul. Lester Jones said it all: the world is a little less bright with the death of LV. When LV walked into a room, the room lit up. He had a contagious laugh that will live with all of us that had the pleasure to know him. I preceded LV at Highland Hospital by four years. I became Associate Chairman of the Department of Surgery while LV was a student. He was the best prepared student, best dressed, and always a gentleman with a huge smile no matter what. A famous memory was: “do you know what you’re doing?” with a laugh, breaking the tension in the OR.
Brenda was the chief pharmacist at CCPM and the Pacific Coast Hospital which was “our” Podiatry Hospital. We were all better because, as a team, they were part of our collective CCPM family. My heart goes out to Brenda, Kitt, and Brett. May LV’s memory be a blessing to you all. Rest in Peace LV.

These plans are using our data and then incorrectly reporting that data to CMS, so they can place patients in a more "at risk" tier and be paid more money. RE: AAMC Projections on the Adequacy of the Physician Workforce: What is the Potential Impact on Podiatric Medicine?

In June 2020, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) released a report concerning the adequacy of the physician workforce. It projects that physician demand will grow faster than supply, leading to a projected total physician shortage of between 54,100 and 139,000 physicians by 2033. It further stated that by 2033, there will be a shortage of primary care physicians of between 21,400 and 55,200 and a shortage across the non-primary care specialties of between 33,700 and 86,700 physicians including between 17,100 and 28,700 for surgical specialties, as well as between 9,300 and 17,800 for medical specialties.
This 2020 update was prepared before the COVID-19 crisis, so although it does not include any specific information or scenarios based on that crisis, it does include some lessons learned from...

I have great respect for Dr. Kornfeld and his practice philosophy, but bluntly, I don’t care what MDs and DOs think of me. I treat my patients and they truly appreciate what I do for them. So a patient went to an Orthopod... okay, but how many times have you seen a foot screwed up by an MD and you were able to save it - probably lots. That’s what I love to do and it truly gives me satisfaction; I have loved doing it for 48 years.
For those who hate what they are doing, find something else that satisfies you. Life is too short to hate your life.
