NY Podiatrist's Organization Collects Over 10,000 Pairs of Shoes
In 2010, Dr. Mary Carlson didn’t expect to be running a charity in addition to her Williston Park podiatry practice. In the fall of that year, she set up a booth at the Williston Day Street Fair to collect shoes for people who needed them. She put an ad for the shoe drive in the Williston Times, expecting a modest collection. But people came with shopping bags and garbage bags full of shoes, she said, and her booth netted more than 500 pairs that day.

A few months later, she turned the effort into Shoes for All, a non-profit that’s given more than 45,000 pairs of shoes to local charities since then, including a delivery of more than 300 pairs Dec. 22 to Harvest for the World in Roosevelt. With help from a total of about 50 volunteers, Shoes For All collects, cleans, sorts, and distributes between 13,000 and 15,000 pairs of shoes each year, Carlson said.

DOJ Scrutinizes Podiatric Residencies For Possible Discrimination in Advertising
Hall Render has become aware that the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices (“OSC”) is currently investigating numerous hospitals across the country on the grounds that the hospitals’ advertisements for podiatric residency positions may be in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act (“INA”).
OSC, which is responsible for enforcing the anti-discrimination provision of the INA, has notified affected hospitals by letter that advertisements placed through the Centralized Application Service for Podiatric Residencies may be unlawful if they restrict podiatry residency positions to U.S. citizens. Hospitals with podiatry residency programs should take immediate steps to determine whether they received a letter from OSC. Violations of the anti-discrimination provision of the INA can result in substantial civil monetary penalties.

FDA Approves PMA Supplement for Integra® Dermal Regeneration Template (IDRT)
Integra LifeSciences Holdings Corporation has announced that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the PMA Supplement for Integra® Dermal Regeneration Template (IDRT) for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU). The approval of this new indication is based on results from the FOUNDER (FOot Ulcer New DErmal Replacement) Study, a multi-center, randomized, controlled, parallel group clinical trial conducted under an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE). The FOUNDER Study showed that patients treated with IDRT demonstrated a 59% improvement in the incidence of complete wound closure compared to standard of care. IDRT, with its newly approved DFU indication, will be marketed under the name Integra® Omnigraft™ Dermal Regeneration Template.

|
Dr. Lawrence Lavery |
“The new indication for IDRT, supported by clinical evidence, will benefit clinicians and their patients. This product has been used in the operating room to treat life-threatening third-degree burns since 1996, and can now be used in the clinic to treat patients who suffer from diabetic foot ulcers,” said FOUNDER Study Principle Investigator Lawrence A. Lavery, DPM, MPH of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Obama Vetoes ACA Repeal Bill
As promised, President Obama has vetoed legislation that would have overturned the Affordable Care Act. The House of Representatives had passed the bill in a largely party-line vote on Wednesday, following earlier Senate passage, despite Obama's previous vow to veto it. Democrats hold enough seats in both houses to prevent an override, if they follow previous voting patterns in support of Obama.
In a message to the House explaining his veto, Obama said the repeal "would reverse the significant progress we have made in improving healthcare in America," adding that the law "is working."

From: Salvatore J Galluzzo, DPM
It appears that there is some boney abnormality with osseophytic bone and exostosis at the site of 2nd met head repair possibly due to too much bone or some abnormal motion at that MTPJ area. You could do a scan or MRI to see if the area is bone or recurrent fibrous tissue.
