AT THE COLLEGES
WesternU’s ‘Rising Voices’ Inspires Students to Advocate for Their Profession

Western University of Health Sciences College of Podiatric Medicine students learned about the importance of advocating for their profession at “Rising Voices for Podiatric Medicine,” an engaging and collaborative American Podiatric Medical Students’ Association (APMSA) Advocacy Forum designed to inspire and equip the next generation of leaders in podiatric medicine.

“Rising Voices” guest speakers with CPM students (Hazelle Vollaire, WesternU)

The event, held Dec. 19, 2025 on the WesternU California campus, featured American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Board member Holly Spohn-Gross, DPM, California Podiatric Medical Association President and CPM Associate Professor Arman Kirakosian, DPM, CPM Professor Stephen Wan, DPM, CPMA Executive Director Michael Cornelison, DPM, and CPMA Legislative Counsel Ryan Spencer, MA, MBA.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
TX Podiatrist Discusses What to Look for in a Long Distance Shoe

Key factors make a running shoe adequate for long-distance running. Running shoes should have a rocker bottom, which is more supportive for long-distance running. The stiffer the shoe, the better. Make sure the shoe fits well and does not rub the foot the wrong way. Once you find shoes that work, stick with them. Do not buy a brand new pair of shoes a week before the marathon.

Dr. Esther Jonas Nagler

“I recommend having at least two pairs of sneakers that work for your feet and alternate wearing them on runs. You probably go through at least three pairs of shoes during marathon training,” said Esther Jonas Nagler, DPM, podiatrist and assistant professor at Baylor. To prevent injuries, find a well-accommodated shoe that does not break down or become cracked or flimsy.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
UK Podiatry Service Detects Stroke Risk with Mobile ECG

Hywel Dda University Health Board’s podiatry clinics are playing a vital role in detecting hidden heart conditions that can lead to stroke. The health board’s pioneering approach, which uses a small mobile device to identify atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart rhythm disorder and major cause of stroke, has been highly commended in the Digital and Technology Innovation category at the Advancing Healthcare Awards Cymru 2025.

Ffion Lloyd-Thomas

Traditionally, podiatrists who detected irregular pulses would refer patients to their GP for an electrocardiogram (ECG), a process that could take time and sometimes meant a longer wait for diagnosis. Ffion Lloyd-Thomas, podiatrist and project lead, said: “We’ve always checked circulation and listened to pulses, so irregular heartbeats were often picked up… Now, we can refer patients straight away for confirmation and ensure they get the care they need sooner.” The streamlined pathway means patients are diagnosed more quickly and closer to home, reducing unnecessary follow-up tests and improving outcomes.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
7 Ways to Save Money on Almost Everything

High prices got you down? These strategies can help you reap deep discounts on everyday spending.

5.  Let tech do the heavy lifting.

Apps and browser extensions now make it much easier to check whether a given product’s current price is higher or lower than usual and whether you might be able to buy it for less from a different retailer. Consider setting deal alerts for planned purchases via sites such as Google Shopping or Slickdeals, which will notify you when an item you’re tracking goes on sale. Deal alerts can also give you a heads-up if something you purchased goes on sale later, so you can request a price adjustment from the retailer.

When possible, check multiple sources before making a purchase, both in-store and online, as prices can vary drastically and promotions change frequently. Technology can help here as well. The app ShopSavvy, for example, allows you to compare prices both online and in-store, using its barcode-scanning feature.

QUERIES (CREDENTIALING BOARDS)
Query: CMS Withdraws BOC’s Status as an Accrediting Organization (AO)

We recently received notification of the Board of Certification/Accreditation (BOC) no longer being an approved accrediting organization by CMS.  I completed my re-credentialling with BOC in 2025 prior to the December 2nd announcement. I have two questions.

First, BOC has filed a lawsuit against CMS for this ruling. Should I proceed with credentialling with another organization, or wait for the outcome of the lawsuit? The CMS website says to re-credential immediately, but this is a large and expensive task.

Second, for those using another organization for their credentialling, are you happy with them? I found ABC difficult to work with in the past, which prompted my switch to BOC more than 10 years ago.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWQUICK POLLS)
From: H. David Gottlieb, DPM

This is a topic which comes up here every few years. When I started out in practice, I wore slacks, button down shirt, tie, and white coat. After many years, I went to wearing scrubs for my own comfort while telling myself that it told patients I was a surgeon. When I went to work at the VA, I continued to wear scrubs. After a while, I noted the Chief of General Surgery almost always came to work well dressed - nice shoes, slacks, shirt, tie, even sports jacket.

I eventually came to the conclusion that what I wore was a matter of respect - not for patients to respect me but for me to show respect to the most important person - the patients sitting in my chair. I could wear scrubs like the custodial staff do or wear professional attire [slacks, shirt, tie]. I chose to respect my patients and did not regret it.
