GA Podiatrist Named as One of America's Most Beautiful (Male) Doctors

Dr. Rondrick Williamson, a podiatric physician appeared today on the Emmy-winning daytime talk series, The Doctors. The multi-talented  Williamson moved to the Atlanta area over a year ago from Macon, Georgia. The Doctors TV show will be launching a calendar to raise money for the American Red Cross called, The Most Beautiful Doctors in America! (The Men’s Edition). Dr. Williamson, who is featured as “Mr. February,” along with the other doctors posing for the calendar, appeared on the  show and offered advice to viewers on obtaining optimal health in the new year.

Williamson wears many hats outside the medical field. He's not only a successful physician with Village Podiatry Center in Atlanta but an entrepreneur, TV talk show host for Perspectives TV, philanthropist (as the founder of The Rondrick Williamson Foundation), and blogger for a popular entertainment blog "The Coffee Shoppe" which he launched last summer.

PODIATRIC INVENTORS

ME Podiatrist Invents a More Reliable Electronic Tuning Fork

The road from physician to physician-entrepreneur has spanned nearly two decades for podiatrist Dr. Todd O’Brien. But he’s now applying his life’s work to an updated and improved digital diagnostic device to help doctors — and eventually patients — check for early signs of nerve damage caused by diabetes. O’Brien got his first taste of inventing when he completed his residency and took a job developing products for a startup medical device company. That was when he discovered his taste for inventing and got “bit by the entrepreneurship bug,” he said.

Dr. Todd O’Brien with NeuroCheck Device

The first device O’Brien’s company will make is less niche and more scalable than previous products. It’s based off a 128-Hz tuning fork, a long-trusted tool used by doctors to measure sensation in the feet of diabetics. To make the test more quantifiable and reproducible, O’Brien has created an electronic device based on the fundamental features of the tuning fork by using vibrations sent through the foot, and a digital timer.

FL Podiatrist Performs ORIF Repair

At 61, Rosemarie Danchik had never stepped foot in a podiatry office until last week, after she fell through her attic into her garage. Dr. Peter Walimire, 33, a foot and ankle surgeon with Athletic Orthopaedic and Reconstructive Center, suggested that she undergo surgery Monday. In the hospital, he performed a repair called an ORIF, or open reduction internal fixation of the calcaneus, or heel bone, which Danchik had broken in three places.

Dr. Peter Walimire discusses treatment options with patient Rosemarie Danchik (Photo: Andrew West)

Reconstructive surgery is Walimire’s specialty, and Southwest Florida adults could have a variety of reasons to need his services. Problems with feet tend to increase with age and are often the first signs of serious illness. Podiatry is sometimes seen as the step-child of medicine, but the specialty involves much more than ingrown toenails.

HEALTHCARE NEWS

Physician Shortage Predictions 'Overestimated': Researchers

Those who forecast shortages of primary-care physicians may be shortsighted, a group of academic researchers says in a Health Affairs report likely to stir controversy on a much-debated issue. The hand-wringing about primary-care shortages is unwarranted if those making the predictions are basing their estimates on doctor-to-general-population ratios that don't align with the productivity of a modern physician practice, researchers from the Columbia Business School in New York and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in Philadelphia said.

In their report, the researchers wrote that using ratios—such as one primary-care doctor for every 2,500 people—to project shortages assumes the traditional model of patients being seen by a single physician is still the order of the day, which leads to misdirected conclusions. The researchers argued that a practice's patient panel can be expanded by using "open" or same-day scheduling, which calls for giving patients the option of seeing another doctor if their regular physician is unavailable.

RE: Advertising for Employees (Mark Weaver, DPM)
From: Joan Schiller, DPM

Find the nearest medical assistant school. Ask to speak to the director. You can request to interview the top 5 (recently or expected) graduates.

Joan Schiller, DPM, Euclid, OH, Joan.Schiller@UHhospitals.org

You may want to try your local state unemployment office. The state of Idaho maintains a 'Job Service' program through the unemployment office, as I am sure many other states do. The jobs available are listed on a website run by the state. We have had great success finding qualified employees there, and no longer bother with the newspaper or Craigslist when looking for workers.

RE: The Self-Esteem of Podiatry 2013 (Robert Kornfeld, DPM)
From: Jack Sasiene, DPM

I appreciate the efforts of Dr. Kornfeld to bring up the elephant in the room. It seems none of our colleagues wish to discuss the REAL issue, as none have responded. We are not in control of our practices - medically nor from a business standpoint. Anyone who thinks so is
fooling themselves. Dr. Kornfeld asks, "What are we willing to do?" Doctors, ALL doctors have an enormous amount of power. That is why laws have been written to restrict us. We gave up our power when we signed up to work for insurance companies - all of them. It does not have to be that way; it wasn't...

Editor's note: Dr. Sasiene's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS (SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS) - PART 1A

RE: The Residency Shortage (Paul Kruper, DPM)
From: Richard H. Lanham, DPM

Firstly, podiatric medicine was only short 60 residency slots this past year to have everyone placed. Secondly, allopathic medicine has far more problems with placement than does the profession of podiatric medicine. Unless students have a 4.0, they are not going to be able to obtain their first selection, and are going to their second to fourth choice to obtain a residency.

Allopathic and osetopathic medical schools are expanding at a phenomenal rate in the U.S. There are so many schools that it is obvious to any educator that quality students will no longer be filling our medical schools. Your profession is working very hard to see that a three-year residency is available for all students. The Council on Podiatric Medical Education of APMA will not allow additional colleges of podiatric medicine to open until all capacity for current students is fulfilled. Is it a tragedy for current graduates? Yes, I believe so. Is the profession trying to resolve the issue? Yes, it is. Under the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), we have only seen the tip of the iceberg.

RE: Residency Shortage (Paul Kruper, DPM)
From: Robert Scott Steinberg. DPM

Paul, Did you have a residency? Who paid your salary? It was Medicare's payments to your hospital. Tell me what law could require a hospital to be forced to host a residency? Colleges of podiatric medicine sure do not have the power to force residencies on hospitals. No, the problem seems to be too many graduates for the number of available slots, not enough doctors willing to be residency directors, and not enough hospitals willing to host programs. And then there is the issue of maybe wanting to limit competition!

Are you a residency director? If not, then you have a huge opportunity to serve podiatry. It's long hours for little extra pay, but gratifying.
