MEETING NEWS

IPED Holds "Personal Touch" Inaugural Meeting

The newly formed Institute for Podiatric Excellence & Development (IPED) held its inaugural meeting at the beautiful Lago Mar Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Over 70 podiatrists and staff participated in an intimate and relaxed environment which featured interactive lectures, workshops, conducted by some of America's best known practice management experts. This format lent itself to productive mentoring opportunities and best practice ideas.

Attendees at IPED Inaugural Meeting

Unique to this personal touch concept was an opportunity for all attendees to sign up to be taken to dinner at nearby restaurants by exhibitors. These small group, off-site convivial gatherings were a huge hit with both exhibitors and attendees, with everyone benefitting from these interactions.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SPORTS MEDICINE)
From: Vince Marino, DPM

Out here in CA, I have seen this issue come up many times and in my opinion, cleats of any kind in a child that young is not a good idea. The biggest problem I have seen is that most of the fields the children play on are turf. When using cleated shoes, the actual cleats themselves act as source of pressure exerted onto the plantar surface of the foot. The cleats usually end up being located under one or more of the metatarsal growth plates and under the calcaneus. This in and of itself causes pain.

If a child is not in high school, I recommend they wear “Turf Shoes.” These have treads specially designed for turf traction and they eliminate the pressure from the cleats. I recommend this for children in all sports including lacrosse, soccer, and other turf sports.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL LEGAL)
From: Lawrence Kobak, DPM, JD,  Cindy Pezza, PMAC

In response to the podiatrist about to join an orthopedic group, the laws are state-specfic. I recommend that the podiatrist uses a healthcare attorney licensed in their state. In New York, the law is clear; a podiatrist may not be a partner in practice with an MD; the only potential exception being an Article 28 facility. I agree with writer that getting the proper legal advice prior to signing anything will help avoid needless trouble afterwards.

Lawrence Kobak, DPM, JD, Mineola, NY

I highly recommend the services of Stan Churchwell, Esq. of Dallas, TX. He is an attorney practicing health law and also practiced podiatry for 25 years. He has helped many of the physicians we have consulted with to draft and review several contracts (on both ends of the spectrum; employers/senior docs and employees/associates).

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODINGLINE CORNER)
From: Jerry Peterson, DPM

Before you go calling the State Board, I suggest that you contact your state association’s representative on legislative activities. I am sure they have a committee and chairperson on this. If not, ask the component president. Going to the state could cause the opening of a can of worms when you don’t ask the right people the correct question.

When you deal with government or any regulatory agency, you always want to know the answer BEFORE you ask the question! There may be better people to ask.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
RE: The Passing of Morton Wittenberg, DPM

Mort was a wonderful colleague and taught me a lot about practice management. Right after I finished my military commitment, before establishing private practice, Mort asked me to take his practice in Augusta for two months while he went to Israel to represent his United Hebrew Congregation in Augusta. He was President that year. I did that task for him, and the first thing that happened when he returned was that he chewed out my butt because I had not have one of the staff file the insurance for a hammertoe correction that I had done while he was gone. Everything else was covered, but he didn't care (I missed a trick).

Mort and I stayed friends for years and were mutually acquainted with another dear friend, Jerry Levine, from Detroit, who was another one of my mentors during my residency.  Mort and Joe Addante, DPM, who wrote a comment about Mort recently, were both mentors to me when I was on the APMA Board of Trustees with them. It is so hard to see mentors expire and leave a hole in the legacy of podiatric medicine.
