PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Worn Running Shoes Present Unseen Risk: SD Podiatrist

Just as important as picking out the right shoe, make sure your sneakers are not worn out. "About 500 miles is what you get out of a shoe," podiatrist Dr. Travis Venner said. Venner has seen patients with plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and stress fractures, all thanks to shoes with too many miles on them. "Some shoes will look brand new. You've been on the treadmill all winter long. They look brand new, but they're not," Venner said.

Dr. Travis Venner

In addition to tracking your miles, there are some signs that it's time to go shoe shopping. "If the sole is wearing out, you know it's time to get a new pair of shoes," Venner said. In addition to looking at the bottom of your shoes, also take a look at the back. Make sure they sit on the floor evenly. "If the back outside of the heel is worn out, you'll see it bowing up," Venner said.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Physician Payments from Manufacturers Released

The Physician Payments Sunshine Act, passed under the Affordable Care Act, requires all pharmaceutical and medical device companies to report payments to physicians, including consulting fees, gifts, speaking fees, meals, travel, and research grants. This information is searchable to the public on a database called Open Payments, managed by the Centers for Medicare & Medical Services (CMS). A recent study by researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine analyzed this database and compared payments among different specialties and identified which ones topped the list. The study was published online the week of January 4 by Mayo Clinic Proceedings

Researchers scrutinized 2.4 million physician payments totaling $475 million made during the last five months of 2013. Internal medicine and orthopedic surgery received the greatest total value at $111 million each. By plugging in the first and last name of a physician on the Open Payments site, an individual can see industry payments listed by company, nature of payment, date, and amount.

CODINGLINE CORNER
Query: Coding for Plantar Warts

When CPT 17110 is used, Aetna rejects claims coded with B07.01 & B07.02, which is what appears in the APMA's CRC. When we finally got someone on the phone, and the connection to India was not disconnected, we were told to "try" B07.8 (1 &/or 2, I assume). By the way, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and UnitedHealthcare accept B07.0 (1 &/or 2). Is anyone else having this problem?

Robert Steinberg, DPM, Hoffman Estates, IL

Response: Neither B07.01 or B07.02 appear in the APMA Coding Resource Center. If your diagnosis was plantar wart, the APMA Coding Resource Center's ICD-10 Quick Index notes
B07.0 - plantar wart. There is no 5th character (-1 or -2) option. There is no laterality with plantar wart. B07.01 or B07.02 would not be a valid ICD-10 code. Aetna correctly rejected those codes.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)
From: David T Weiss, DPM

I am so relieved that Dr. Weil has started this lawsuit against the “so-called-custom-orthotic” products. In Richmond Virginia, Good Feet and Foot Solutions are two of the culprits of this disgusting misleading of the public. I have seen too many “desperate patients in pain” spending too much money on nothing more than an off-the-shelf device. I wish I had the time and energy to disguise myself as a patient, equipped with a hidden camera, and record what goes on in these stores. And we could post it on Facebook and YouTube!

I think the only thing that will work is if we all work together with legal action to stop these stores. I also think that these orthotic-fitting practices and recommendations based on symptoms would be “practicing medicine without a license.” How would this be different from a store offering custom Rx eyeglasses just by their own determination? We can make this happen if we work together!
