PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE - PART 1
PA Podiatrist Discusses How to Prevent Recurrent Ankle Sprains

According to Zachary Ritter, DPM, “the most common type of ankle sprain is lateral. It occurs when the foot turns inward and the ankle rolls outward. However, an ankle sprain can also happen when the ankle joint rolls inward. People who have an ankle sprain are prone to repeated ankle sprains in the future. That’s why it’s important to get treatment so the ankle heals properly and to take measures to prevent another ankle sprain.”

Dr. Zachary Ritter

“One or more ankle sprains can cause “wobbly ankles” if the swelling damages the nerves in the ankle. The nerves send signals to different muscles to stabilize the ankle when you change direction or stand on uneven ground. If you have this problem, you can support your ankle by bracing and taking extra precautions. You can also re-train the nerves and muscles through exercises. In addition to targeted exercises, wearing an ankle brace or athletic tape can help prevent ankle sprains when you play a sport or go for a hike. If your ankles frequently feel unstable, you may wish to wear a brace every day,” says Dr. Ritter.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE - PART 2
Overuse Injuries Common in January: NJ Podiatrist

According to Yakov Groysman, DPM, "Each January brings a surge in gym attendance, running mileage, and recreational sports participation. Sports medicine research consistently shows that sudden increases in activity, particularly during colder weather, place added strain on tendons and soft tissue, increasing the risk of overuse injuries such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and heel pain.

Dr. Yakov Groysman

“At this time of year, we see patients who are motivated to improve their health but unintentionally push their bodies too far, too fast,” said Dr. Groysman. “Cold temperatures can make tendons less flexible, and rapid changes in activity create a perfect storm for foot and ankle pain.”

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
FL Podiatrist Named a Wellness Leader of Naples

Stephanie van Heerden, DPM has been named a Wellness Leader of Naples, Florida. Dr. van Heerden earned her podiatric medical degree and completed her podiatric residency at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in New York City. She then pursued a surgical fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery of the Lower Extremity.

Dr. Stephanie van Heerden

After the birth of her second child, She re-located to the Naples area. "I instantly knew Naples was my happy place," says Dr. van Heerden. She now works at an independent living community and also helped launch a podiatry concierge service's presence in Southwest Florida with Integrative Foot and Ankle (based in West Palm Beach). "My intent is to grow this service from routine procedures to advanced sports medicine and regenerative medicine treatments using the modern advancements in cellular-based treatment modalities."

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
7 Ways to Save Money on Almost Everything

High prices got you down? These strategies can help you reap deep discounts on everyday spending.

4. Be basic.

You no doubt know that switching from name brands to store brands can save you a bundle — from 25% to 40% on groceries, 80% to 85% on medications and, according to the market research firm Numerator, $2 per item on average for all products. But you may be unwilling to sacrifice taste and quality to save a few bucks.

That’s typically no longer the trade-off you have to make. “Store brands have gotten a lot better over the years,” says Matt Schulz, chief consumer finance analyst with LendingTree and author of Ask Questions, Save Money, Make More. “It used to be that they were a pale imitation of what you wanted, but a lot of stores have stepped up their game.” For staple items — such as pantry basics, paper goods, cleaning supplies, and over-the-counter medications — generic or store brands typically offer nearly identical quality to name brands at a significantly lower price, Kamel says.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
From: Elliot Udell DPM

The best way to cover yourself is to give a copy of the report to the patient's primary care physician. Give him or her a couple of days to digest the report and then call the doctor, discuss the matter, and document the conversation in the patient's notes.

Since we do not treat autoimmune diseases, we need to document that we made a proper and timely referral. With the "ball in the court" of the patient's primary care physician, he or she might opt to do nothing or refer the patient to an immunologist. In  either case you are covered.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE) - PART 1
From: Keith L. Gurnick, DPM

I was a competitive distance runner in track and cross country in high school and continued to train and run and race for many years after. The protective benefits of training and running in appropriate, well designed and properly fitted running shoes outweighs barefoot running. Even with the tremendous improvements in shoes, injuries including overuse, acute traumas, repetitive trauma will always occur. That is the nature of the running sport and how athletes do their best to get in shape, stay in shape or try to improve and excel, in all genders and all age groups.

Every year, over 300 million pairs of athletic shoes are sold worldwide, and every year many brands come out with new colors and updates that do not meaningfully change the shoe but do promote consumption. Nike is the most popular sneaker brand among U.S. consumers, with two thirds of respondents who know the brand actually liking it. Adidas also enjoys a significant preference but lags behind Nike. Converse, New Balance, and Sketchers follow some way behind.

Here is an excellent article on athletic and running shoe sales growth over time.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE) - PART 2
From: Joel Feder, DPM

In response to Dr. Hoffman’s opinions on barefoot running, I consider that advice nutritious. My family ate much better from the fees I earned by treating barefoot runners.
