PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
FL Podiatrist Uses Amniotic Tissue To Heal Shark Bite Wound

When a typical day at the beach turned into a terrifying encounter with a shark, 13 year old Alysa Whetro wondered if she'd ever be able to run track again. Doctors tried something unusual to heal her wounds - tissue from the umbilical cord of a healthy mother. The shark severed Alysa's Achilles tendon. It's an injury that normally takes more than six months to heal; but Amber Shane, DPM, FACFAS, Foot and Ankle Surgeon at Orlando Foot and Ankle Clinic used an innovative technique to repair the damage.

Dr. Amber Shane

"Amniotic tissue comes from the placenta, and those have been shown to have the highest amount of growth factors and growth cells to help tissues in healing," Dr. Shane told Ivanhoe. Dr. Shane covered Alysa's severed tendon with a square piece of tissue from an umbilical cord donated to science by a healthy mother. After two months in a cast, and two months of physical therapy, she is completely healed

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
Start Exercise Program Slowly to Prevent Overuse Injuries: MN Podiatrist

An area foot specialist who encourages exercise also offers some precautions to help ensure that exercise is beneficial and not detrimental to healthy feet and ankles. Dr. Kyle Abben, a foot and ankle surgeon and podiatrist with Jamestown Regional Medical Center, said people who have been inactive should start out slowly and build themselves up. Active people, especially those who have been idle, also tend to want to jump back into a heavy routine that could cause soreness or injury, he said.

Dr. Kyle Abben

"I see a lot of stress fractures and shin splints from people who were going at it hard and trying to do a mile or two from scratch after not being active for a year or more," Abben said. "To avoid an overuse type injury, slow down and think long-term."

QUERIES (CLINICAL)

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES) - PART 2
From: Judith Rubin, DPM

I don't know where Dr. Borreggine is getting his information from, but Good Feet is alive and well and doing business throughout the Houston area, lying to people about orthotics and charging outrageous fees. They are even endorsed by the syndicated radio talk show host Michael Berry. Most people are paying between $300-$1200 for two to three pairs on their "step-up" theory of building up to harder orthotics. I went into one store and let the salesman know who I am and that I was a board certified podiatrist. He took me in the "back" of the store and showed me the already pre-made orthotics. He told me he knew they were "junk" but needed a job so what could he do.

Patients don't want to pay for another "custom made" pair of orthotics, since the Good Feet ones did not work. If they do want you to make them, they want their insurance to pay. When I ask them why they didn't bill their other orthotics to their insurance, they tell me they weren't dispensed by a doctor. So I ask you, why are we doing nothing about these companies? Google them and you will see that in the Houston area, with the blessings of Michael Berry, they are springing up all over, and certifying that "these orthotics are custom made."
