PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS

NY Podiatrist Sworn in as County Legislator

The chambers of the Monroe County Legislature were full late on January 3rd, as a crowd gathered to see Dr. Joe Carbone, R, Irondequoit, officially sworn in. Carbone won a special election last November to fill a vacancy in the Legislature, representing Irondequoit's 16th district.

Carbone is a doctor of podiatric medicine and has been in private practice on Titus Avenue in Irondequoit for 25 years. Carbone also serves on the board of directors for the Golisano Children's Hospital and is a past president and current member of the Monroe County Podiatry Society.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

Bilingual CA Podiatrist Welcomed by Community

Dr. Byron Carrasco is opening an office in Corning, CA, and is welcomed by the Corning Healthcare District, said District Manager Shirley Fay. Fay said the new doctor will be a welcome treasure to patients in the southern part of the county who previously had to find a way to travel to Chico or as far as Redding to see a podiatrist.

Dr. Byron Carrasco

Carrasco graduated from New York College of Podiatric Medicine and specializes in podiatric foot and ankle surgery. "His ability to speak both English and Spanish is an asset to our community," said Guadalupe Green, president of Corning Healthcare District. "We are excited that he is coming to Corning."

MEDICARE NEWS

Medicare Pay Reprieve in Place; Next Threat is 2% Cut in March

Late on Jan. 1, the House voted in favor of a legislative package approved by the Senate in the early hours of the morning that postponed a 26.5% cut to doctors’ pay rates mandated by the sustainable growth rate formula. Although enactment technically came after the cut officially had taken effect, the result of the retroactive measure is that all 2013 physician claims will be paid at 2012 levels.

Medicare physician pay rates and many other federal expenditures would still be affected by the sequester, the consequence of Congress and the Obama administration failing to agree on more targeted spending cuts during 2011 negotiations. If such an agreement or another delay cannot be achieved by March 1, the new sequestration deadline established by the departing 112th Congress, doctor pay will be reduced by 2% under the automatic cuts. Certain non-Medicare health programs, such as clinical research and health professions funding, will be cut by 7.8% for 2013.

SUCCESS TIPS FROM THE MASTERS

Editor's Note: PM News is proud to present excerpts from Meet the Masters

Bret Ribotsky:  What are your thoughts on the residency shortage crisis?

Dr. Lowell Weil, Sr.

Lowell Weil, Sr.: The residency shortage is mainlined from the standpoint that the numbers of applicants we have should come from the profession and not from the schools. You cannot just train more people than the profession is ready to take on. This situation occurred in anesthesia  and ophthalmology about 20 years ago, where practitioners were all earning less, so they just cut back on the number of residents. I think it’s a travesty to train people and not have a mechanism for them to get a license. My group has taken in two or three graduates as  preceptors each year to allow them some training so that they can enter the residency process the following year.

Meet the Masters is broadcast each Tuesday night at 9 PM (EST). This week's guest has not yet been confirmed. You can register for future events by clicking here

QUERIES (NON-CLINCAL)

Query: Prolotherapy

I am interested in learning about prolotherapy. Does anyone know of any specific courses, programs, books, or videos available to get training in prolotherapy for the lower extremity?  Also, who does one purchase the prolotherapy solutions from?

RESPONSES / COMMENTS - (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1

RE: Employment Advertising (Mark Weaver, DPM)
From: Joel Lang, DPM

I suggest that Dr. Weaver try the local community college and/or nearby private schools that teach a medical assistant's program.

Joel Lang, DPM (retired), Cheverly, MD, langfinancial@verizon.net

Placing an advertisement and getting 1,000 responses is not the way to go. Every large community has at least one, if not many, "Career Institutes." Their students are high school graduates who take a 9-month certificate program in a "Medical Assistant" track (back office) or "Medical Office Assistant" (front office). They do a one-month externship, so you can check that as a reference. They all have a post-graduate placement officer who will send you resumes based on your requirements. You can specify criteria such as GPA (they tend to mark high) and attendance.

RE: Source for PDM Replacement Parts (Frank Lattarulo, DPM)
From: Joshua Kaye, DPM

I own three PDM chairs which are about 25 years old. Unfortunately, the company went out of business many years ago and, to the best of my knowledge, replacement parts are no longer available. I’ve found that local repair companies can repair some functions of the chair and, in some cases, can use some currently available generic parts. However, that type of repair cost is generally quite high.

RE: NY Podiatrist Advises Against Cosmetic Foot Surgery (William Deutsch, DPM)
From: Jeffrey Kass, DPM

I concur with Dr. Deutsch. Dr. Positano's comments were disappointing. While, I am not big into "cosmetic surguries", I don't begrudge anyone who is. Quoting a case of nerve damage from an injection was a poor way of displaying one's opinion. Is hyaluronic acid even used to cushion feet? I thought pods were using fillers like Restalyne.

There is nothing wrong with being a surgeon and thinking like a surgeon (As long as you don't let it go to your head of course).

RE: NY Podiatrist Advises Against Cosmetic Foot Surgery (William Deutsch, DPM)
From: Gino Scartozzi, DPM

With this ongoing conversation of "cosmetic" foot surgery, I read Dr. Deutsch's post and final quote "why should a surgically-trained podiatrist be less of a physician than a surgically-trained cosmetic surgeon?"

I was in my office the other day treating a 15 year old male who presented with his nanny. The boy presented with a paronychia of the left hallux nail which has recurred since last seen approximately six months ago. The mother of the patient was unable to...
