The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 39th Annual Student Writing Competition.

All papers MUST be non-technical in nature and original. (NOT AI generated) Appropriate subjects include practice management, ethics, law, education, healthcare, or any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.

There is no word limitation. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.

First prize one thousand dollars ($1,000), Second prize seven hundred and fifty dollars ($750) Third prize five hundred dollars ($500) sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.

Faulty Foot Biomechanics Can Cause Knee Pain: KY Podiatrist
Chirag Patel, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist and a foot and ankle surgeon for New Horizons Foot and Ankle Associations, says that "certain biomechanics of the feet can affect different areas of the body including knee, hip, and even higher up including the shoulders." He explains that certain foot types affect how you walk, increasing swing at the hip, causing a tilt at the shoulders, or adding pressure on the knees.

"One such foot type that stresses the knees that is rather common is over-pronation. This is an excessive inward roll of the foot during gait. This can cause internal rotation of the tibia, stressing the knee joint medially," the podiatrist says. "The opposite of pronation is supination, which is indicated by insufficient inward roll, leading to outward stress on the knee and potential lateral compartment, or outside of the leg, issues. Supinatory foot types are typically high-arched feet." By having your own foot mechanics and gate evaluated by a podiatrist, you'll gain a better understanding of how these factors could be affecting your comfort.

RE: Does Texting While Walking Affect Gait’s Plantar Pressure Parameters?

This was quite an interesting read from an offshore physical therapy journal. The conclusion: Compared to normal walking, the forces on the forefoot and midfoot and the pressure per unit area increased in walking while texting. It is thought that the pace of walking slows down, and focus and attention shift to the front of the body. Does this make sense to many of you out there who are biomechanical experts? Are we now to consider the patient's texting patterns when prescribing custom orthotics?
Seriously though, to have been better, this article could have provided more information on falls related to texting while walking and/or contributing to the development of kyphosis.
