UK Podiatrist Awarded Sought-After Fellowship
A podiatry academic from the University of Plymouth has been awarded a sought-after Clinical Trials Fellowship from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). Dr. Joanne Paton, Podiatrist in the School of Health Professions, was one of only six academics nationally to receive the fellowship, after submitting a successful joint application with Peninsula Clinical Trials Unit (PenCTU) in Plymouth.

The fellowships are designed to support existing NIHR Trainees with an interest in, and experience of, working with clinical trials. Dr. Paton is currently an NIHR Clinical Academic Research Fellow and leads the Balance Enhancement, Ulcer Prevention (BEUP) research group at the University; the work of which is focused on improving the foot health outcomes of people with diabetes and neuropathy. The group has particular expertise in the development and evaluation of insoles for people with diabetes at increased risk of developing foot ulceration or experiencing a fall.

10 Steps to Help Make Your Practice Labor Compliant - Part 6
With employment litigation prevalent, most employers have come to expect that a former or current employee will, at some point, sue or file a complaint. Medical practices have to be more proactive to protect themselves. The following steps may not only help prevent the problem, but better position a medical practice to defend a case brought by an employee, should one arise.
6. Well Document Employee Conduct. Poor employee performance and employee misconduct must be documented. When it comes to defending a practice against claims of discrimination, especially those arising from a claim of discriminatory termination, most employers will claim the termination was based upon months or years of poor performance or misconduct. The employee will often argue that their performance was exemplary and that the termination was motivated by their race, religion, gender, etc. When a warning or counseling of the employee is not documented, the employee will almost always argue that it did not happen.

RE: Recommendation for a Healthcare Attorney
After being in solo private practice for 19 years, I have been offered a position with a local orthopedic group. I would be coming in as an employee. Although I see many advantages in being part of a larger group, I want to make sure I am making all of the right decisions. I am looking for some recommendations for a healthcare attorney or consultant who has guided many DPMs through this exact process.

Query: Soccer Cleates for Young Children
I would like to hear my colleagues' opinions on the appropriateness of soccer cleats for younger kids (<6 years old). Do you feel these are necessary and more importantly, safe? I never played organized soccer and can't speak from experience, but at their light weight and limited strength and speed, I can't imagine traction is a huge problem for this age group, and being anchored to the ground could increase torsional strain on lower extremity joints.

Query: Staff Performing CPT 17110
Can the office staff perform CPT 17110 (destruction [e.g., laser surgery, electrosurgery, cryosurgery, chemosurgery, surgical curettement], of benign lesions other than skin tags or cutaneous vascular proliferative lesions; up to 14 lesions) and bill this code without the doctor being in the office?
Anna Sanders, Clarksville, TN
Response: In my opinion, the answer would be a resounding “no.” In the State of Illinois, if an unlicensed staff member provides procedural or surgical treatment as described in the post, it would be practicing medicine without a license. Not only would it be illegal to perform said treatment, but also to bill an insurance carrier for the surgical services performed by an unlicensed member of the doctor’s staff.
I recommend you check with your state licensing board (my response may not be the same for your state). If you do check with your licensing board and get a response, I would appreciate you sharing it with us.

Mort was my colleague, teacher, mentor, and friend. In 1970, straight out of residency, I became his associate. A week later he was off to Israel. I survived during his absence not knowing anything about office routine. He taught me a lot about life and the practice of medicine. I will miss him at the GPMA meetings Rest in peace dear friend.
