AT THE COLLEGES |
Former DMU Professor to be Posthumously Inducted into IL HS Hall of Fame
The Ottawa community's love affair with Ottawa Township High School's notable alumni will be conducted this year on Saturday, Feb. 14. Among the inductees will be the late Dr. Frank Kneussl. Kneussl began a teaching career at the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine, teaching anatomy. In 1972, he joined the faculty of the Department of Anatomy of the Medical University of South Carolina, teaching anatomy to medical and dental students, and also carrying out research.

Dr. Frank Kneussl |
In 1980, he joined the faculty of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery — now Des Moines University — becoming a founder of the physician assistant program, helped to develop the podiatric medicine program, and formulated and developed the histology course and laboratory manual for medical and podiatric medical students.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE |
MD Podiatrist Discusses Morton's Neuroma in Runners
According to Gene Mirkin, DPM, "If you have pain between the third and fourth toes, you most likely have a Morton's neuroma. This is swelling or scarring of the nerve. Symptoms can be cramping, burning, and/or feeling like an ice pick is being pushed between the toes. Usually, relief is obtained by removing the shoe and massaging the area. Other possible diagnoses include metatarsalgia, bursitis, capsulitis, ganglion cyst, or even a stress fracture."
|
Dr. Gene Mirkin |
"The neuroma diagnosis is confirmed by pinching the space between the third and fourth toes while squeezing the foot from side to side. If your symptoms are reproduced, that pretty much confirms it. It can be further confirmed by ultrasound or MRI, but MRI is unnecessary in my opinion," says Dr. Mirkin.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY |
NJ Podiatrist and Former College Hoops Star Discusses Business Side of Medicine
Dr. Stacey Paukovitz attended Fordham University from 1988 to 1993, and was a member of the women's basketball team. She is a podiatric surgeon, Board Certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, has been in practice for 17 years, and is currently opening a new, private practice in Manasquan, NJ.
|
Dr. Stacey Paukovitz (now and then) |
"Starting my own practice brought a lot of new challenges and experiences. You now have to really focus on the business side of things which can be quite foreign to a doctor who spends most of their time dealing with just the medical side of things. It is certainly a different animal but an exciting one, and I'm ready for the new challenges. The chance to finally practice in the area I live in is a dream come true, most of all it gives me a chance to be closer to my girls and spend more time enjoying their personal activities which is most important to me." says Dr. Paukovitz.

DIABETES UPDATE |
ADA Issues New Standards of Medical Care for Diabetes
The new guidelines for people with diabetes now include:
-
A new blood sugar standard for children and adolescents -- a hemoglobin A1C of <7.5 or less.
-
A statement that e-cigarettes are not an alternative to smoking or a way to help smokers quit.
-
A recommendation that people 65 or older get the pneumonia vaccine in two separate shots -- PCV13 (Prevnar), followed 12 months later by PPSV23 (Pneumovax).
-
Lowering the BMI threshold to 23 for screening Asian-Americans for diabetes. A BMI of 25 is what's usually considered overweight, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention but Asians have an increased risk for diabetes at a lower BMI, according to the ADA.
-
Patients with insensate feet, foot deformities, or a history of foot ulcers have their feet examined at every visit.

ICD-10 UPDATE |
ICD-10 Delay May Be on Legislative Agenda
ICD-10 might be on the legislative agenda when the 114th Congress convenes in January. The House Energy and Commerce Committee on Dec. 10 issued a statement that it is prepared to hold a Congressional hearing on ICD-10 in 2015. Add the fact that physician groups have been lobbying for an additional two-year delay to the code switchover—last month a letter from the Medical Society of the State of New York to Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) was circulated to other members of Congress requesting the ICD-10 deadline be pushed back to October 2017—and you have the makings of a political fight.
When Congress meets next year to again consider changes to the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate formula for paying physicians, a further ICD-10 delay could be part of a so-called “doc-fix” bill like the one passed by Congress in late March 2014 and signed into law in April by President Obama that included a provision to delay the ICD-10 deadline by one year.

OBAMACARE IN THE NEWS |
Republicans Eye Reconciliation Route in Bid to Repeal ACA
With Senate Democrats losing their majority but still able to muster enough troops to mount successful filibusters, Republicans are eyeing another tactic in their uphill fight to dismantle Obamacare. It’s known as reconciliation, part of the budget process. It’s a powerful but unwieldy tool that the majority can use to push its issues through Congress with only majority votes in either chamber, thus evading the roadblock of a filibuster in the Senate.
GOP leaders are expected to hold votes on full repeal of Obamacare, giving new lawmakers a chance to go on record for the policy even though it’s certain to fail to clear a Senate filibuster. They’ll also hold votes to scrap Obamacare’s excise tax on medical device sales and change the law’s definition of full-time work week from 30 hours to 40 — both moves that might attract Democratic votes and would put Mr. Obama in a jam.

QUERIES (EMR) |
Query: ICD-10 Computer Program
Is there a company that makes a computer program compatible with the new ICD-10 codes? Example: If you typed in the appropriate diagnosis with all the details and treatments, your computer would give you the appropriate ICD-10 codes which are applicable.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL) - PART 1 |
From: Brian Kiel, DPM
Dr. Kornfeld is absolutely correct. There are MANY podiatrists who are filing for services to get payment for RFC/PFC. I have also had numerous patients tell me that another podiatrist that they went to got payment for this. My response is always the same - you should go back to that podiatrist because I won't do something illegal or unethical for any amount.
