Minimalist Running is Not Dead Yet - CA Podiatrist
“Minimalist running is not dead,” says Jamie Mieras, DPM, a Boulder, CO-based podiatrist and recreational ultrarunner. “But the movement toward well-cushioned, low-drop shoes is certainly growing stronger,” says Dr. Mieras.

Dr. Jamie Mieras |
At running stores, you’ll see that the number of minimalist shoes is dwindling, while the number of highly cushioned shoes — from companies like Hoka, Altra, Skechers, Vasque, Pearl Izumi, and Brooks — is on the rise.

NJ Podiatrist Becomes Zumba Instructor and Drops 25 Pounds
Hawthorne’s Dr. John Branwell is all about feet. By day or by night, Between his podiatry practice and passion for Zumba, Branwell’s vocation and avocation are firmly rooted in feet. Branwell, a podiatrist for 23 years, joined his first Zumba class in May of 2015. Now he takes five classes a week, has lost 25 pounds, and even became a certified instructor. The feet he works on are stationary and stable, but he gets his own moving quickly in the popular Latin American dance fitness program.

Dr. John Branwell (before and after) |
“I wasn’t much into gym activities or weightlifting,’’ Branwell said. “I heard about Zumba, I like to dance, and I love music. The rest is history.” Branwell’s weight loss was a byproduct of Zumba. While he wanted to shed pounds, he found he was having fun in the classes. “Losing weight was a bonus,’’ Branwell said.

Canadian Foot Doctor Deemed "Incompetent" for 2nd Time
A banned dentist-turned-foot-doctor has now been deemed "incompetent" for the second time and will — again — face a disciplinary committee. The College of Chiropodists of Ontario took five times longer than usual to investigate patient complaints and make the decision. According to the statement of allegations filed by the College, Dupont is accused of using unapproved implants without patients' knowledge or consent, failing to keep adequate records, doing work that is out of his scope of practice, and more. The College also deemed Dupont "incompetent" based on healthcare codes of conduct and regulations.

10 Steps to Help Make Your Practice Labor Compliant - Part 4
With employment litigation prevalent, most employers have come to expect that a former or current employee will, at some point, sue or file a complaint. Medical practices have to be more proactive to protect themselves. The following steps may not only help prevent the problem, but better position a medical practice to defend a case brought by an employee, should one arise.
4. Maintain Proper Time Records. The only way to properly defend your practice from a claim that an employee was not paid overtime or the correct minimum wage is to take steps to ensure your practice is in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and local labor regulations. The practice must maintain contemporaneous time and payroll records showing, among other things, the hours worked and the compensation paid. If the records are not maintained or do not accurately show that the employee was paid properly, including overtime, the employer may have difficulty proving their case.

| RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) | |
From: Robert S. Steinberg, DPM, Joe Boylan, DPM
Alireza Khosroabadi, DPM, stated, "As with any surgical procedure, once you perform enough of them, you start encountering complications." I challenge that statement. That's not how I practice. Don't we all want to get better, with each and every procedure? The more you do a procedure, the better you are supposed to get at doing them, unless you get careless and sloppy.
Robert S. Steinberg, DPM, Schaumberg, IL
I appreciate Dr. Khosroabadi's candid case presentation. If I saw one of these post-op patients, I would treat the patient without disparaging the surgeon. I am a strong believer in surgeon preference. That being said, in my opinion, MIS surgery has very narrow indications in foot surgery and is not well suited for hallux valgus surgery.
Open hallux valgus procedures offer much better and stable constructs, lending well to internal fixation. In the 1980s-early 90s, the NJ & NYC area had a lot of MIS DPMs - most who seemed to have ridden off into the sunset. I discourage today’s residency-trained DPMs from the widespread performance of MIS, especially for hallux valgus.
Joe Boylan, DPM, Ridgefield, NJ

From: Name Withheld
My attorney added the statement that "the lease would be null and void should Dr. ***** be unable to perform his medical duties in his usual manner." This seemed clear enough to me, however the landlord was ready to take me to court. While I was told that I would probably win, I ended up settling for $10,000.

RE: The Passing of Richard B. Hawkins, MD
Richard B. Hawkins, MD, 75, of Fitchburg, passed away Thursday, December 29th. Dr. Hawkins was a real friend of podiatry. He shared his knowledge and skills regarding arthroscopic surgery and was most helpful to those of us who were willing to learn.
I first met him at the Deaconess Hospital where he was a senior resident. He worked with us, especially when we required a physician monitor to do our surgery. He was helpful and especially encouraging to our residents, usually praising our academic training. Following the completion of his training, he opened his practice in my city of Fitchburg. As a friendly and helpful orthopedist colleague, he was “a gift from heaven". I'm sure the podiatrists who attended his lectures will remember him as a most friendly and helpful colleague.

Mort Wittenberg will be missed as already has been stated by several other podiatrists who knew him well. Mort was a real gentleman and did much for our profession. I also served on committees with him in our heydays of podiatric medicine. He definitely was one of the heroes of our profession. I also want to extend my sympathy to his family.

RE: The Passing of Morton Wittenberg, DPM
It's difficult to find the words to appropriately express feelings when we lose a friend who was also a dedicated colleague. Morty and I cried together and often laughed together. I was fortunate to accompany him to Israel and also have him accompany me to Italy. We had an unusual bond since we both lost a son named "Bart." Each in our own way shared prayers and memories, and frequently we had the comfort of being able to grieve with an understanding true friend.
Little has to be said regarding his contributions because he lived and loved podiatry. Several of us were introduced to the "computer world" by Morty who was often at the cutting edge of advancing podiatric progress. I will miss him as a colleague, a teacher, and above all, as a loyal friend.
Joseph Addante, DPM, Fitchburg, MA
