PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Suspect Who Stole Computer From IN Podiatrist Arrested

An Indianapolis man was in the Hamilton County Jail Monday after police said he hit several businesses and targeted computer equipment. Police said they caught 52 year-old Anthony Wayne Reed after a traffic stop in Carmel. "I still can't believe he got in there," said Dr. Gad Flaumenhaft, a podiatrist and owner at Noblesville Foot Clinic. Dr. Flaumenhaft took 24-Hour News 8 to the back of his office, where police say Reed broke in. Reed is facing three counts of burglary and theft.

Police initially stopped Reed in Carmel for an expired license plate. But what they found in his car led them to Dr. Flaumenhaft's business and several others. Dr. Flaumenhaft said police called him Sunday alerting him to the crime and that they had his computer. Dr. Flaumenhaft said no patient information was compromised on his computer because it is password-protected.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Become Less Defensive

It is only natural to want to defend yourself against another person’s verbal attack. Even if someone is being honest—and tactful—criticism stings. However, if you can’t accept negative feedback, you’ll be known as a whiner or hothead, and that is bad for your career.

Follow this three-step process to control your defensiveness—and to protect your workplace reputation and relationships:

1. Pause. Imagine what you want to do or say to counter the verbal attack or slight. Then do nothing. Swallow your words, take a deep breath and wait to respond. Reason: Your natural reaction will be to defend yourself or justify your actions. That shows that you aren’t open to feedback.
2. Pause again. Think of the second statement you would like to make or action you would like to take. Bite your tongue. Reason: You’ll be more likely to retaliate, responding with your own insults or by becoming sarcastic or rude, so stay quiet.
3. Speak. Bring to mind the third response and say or do that. Reason: In most cases, once you have prevented yourself from defending your actions or retaliating against the other person, you will be calmer and more focused on finding a solution.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Fee for Records Copying in NY

When we are paid 75 cents per page to make copies for a patient in New York, can we use both sides of the copy paper and charge the 75 cents per side?

Dennis Fassman, DPM, Westbury, NY

Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. The statute reads: "The cost can be no more than Seventy-Five cents ($.75) per page for paper copies and a reasonable charge for diagnostic images, plus postage."

There are two pages on a sheet of paper, thus a double-sided sheet can be reimbursed up to $1.50

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLL) - PART 1A
From: Ira Baum, DPM

Dr. Kiel makes a point regarding the dissatisfaction of a broad cross-section of medicine, but that's not the point. The concern is our profession. It is also incorrect to pigeon hole the dissatisfaction to earning capacity. Podiatry has had internal and external issues that have not, in my opinion, been addressed with any practical solutions for both the short and long-term vision of our profession.

I have no interest in expressing how I might solve some of the fundamental issues; there have been more than a few reasonable solutions expressed in PM News. There are many variables that impact personal satisfaction when it comes to a career that serves the public and for those of us who have families and financial responsibilities, that if not met would surely negatively affect an individual's love of their chosen career. I am in the sunset of my career, and have made a great life for myself and family, yet that doesn't mean that the profession shouldn't address these issues so that our young colleagues and students can look forward to satisfying careers.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PM NEWS QUICK POLL) - PART 1B
RE: Would You Change Occupations if You Could?
From: Judith Rubin, DPM

There are many people who would have loved to be something else if they had the chance. But, I know many of you feel like I do. Back in the early 1980s, I felt very special being a 2-year residency-trained surgical podiatrist. I got paid what I asked for, and all was good.

We could open up cold and the profession was there to help you. Now, going out on your own isn't an option due to the money. I was always a little rebellious trying to put myself on par with my MD colleagues. Being a woman made it...

Editor's note: Dr. Rubin's extended-length letter can be read here.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEETING NEWS)
From: Richard Kanzarsky, DPM

I was one of the 28 podiatric physicians who attended Dr. Hrywnak's Lecture on ACOs and Metrics. What I left with after the lecture was total disappointment at our profession. Why are we not informed of all the changes that are happening? Why are we so splintered? The inevitable is happening, reimbursement is dropping, expenses going up. Is private practice for podiatry over? It sure seems that way if we sit and do nothing.

Dr. Hrywnak's lecture outlined the changes that are coming, the problems that podiatry will encounter and the possible solutions. Yet we worry about who can be rear foot certified. Let's worry about getting reimbursed for the services we perform. We need to mobilize and take a stand that podiatry is needed to be included in all these changes. I leave you with what woke me up at the lecture, Dr. Hrywnak brought in a physician's assistant who spoke for 5 minutes on all the treatments he provides for foot pathology at the family physician's office he works at, which is in an ACO. The physician's assistant was taught by a podiatrist. Nuff said?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL/LEGAL)
From: Jim Fisher, DPM

911 is your first line of defense, yes. In addition, I bought a HealthFirst mobile crashcart complete with O2 and defibrillator. It is made for the dental profession and is amazingly organized, light, and easy to move. I take it with me to my satellite office. It saved the life of an accident victim I came across on our rural roads two days after I received it. It has everything a crashcart would need and is very cost-effective.

The defibrillator is amazing as well: easy to use, and it tells you what to do, even if that is to do nothing. The 15 minutes I spent with the accompanying DVDs for the crashcart and the defibrillator were well worth it, and it gave me just a tiny bit more peace of mind.
