WI Podiatrist Discusses Ingrown Toenails
“Ingrown nails, the most common nail impairment, are nails in which the corners or sides dig painfully into the soft tissue of nail grooves,” explains Camille Zizzo, DPM, a podiatrist at Aurora Health Care. “Usually, toenails grow straight out. However, sometimes one or both corners or sides curve and grow into the flesh. The big toe is the most common location for this condition, but other toes can also become affected.”

“If you suspect an infection due to an ingrown toenail, immerse the foot in a warm, saltwater soak — 1 tablespoon Epsom salt to 1 quart water — or soapy water. Then, apply an antiseptic and bandage the area,” Dr. Zizzo recommends. If a short trial of home treatment has not resulted in improvement of the condition, Dr. Zizzo recommends scheduling an appointment with your podiatrist. “You should see a podiatrist immediately if any drainage or excessive redness is present around the toenail,” says Dr. Zizzo. For people with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or other circulatory disorders, she recommends seeking medical care as soon as possible.

Podiatrist Re-Appointed to CO Podiatry Board
Gov. Jared Polis has announced that Michael D. Vaardahl, DPM, MS, a podiatrist with the Foot and Ankle Center of the Rockies in Greeley was re-appointed for another four-year term on the Colorado Podiatry Board. Dr. Vaardahl received a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from Barry University and a podiatric medical degree from the Barry University College of Podiatric Medicine.

Query: Storing Charts
I will be closing my clinic in the next few months. I have heard different things regarding how long doctors’ offices need to hold/keep/store charts. Typically, I hear 7 or 10 years. Is there a magic number or a source (like in California) to officially check?

Response: The time frame I use is 7 years, which addresses the outer limits of any Medicare or commercial insurance audit. Medicare regs specifically say you must keep all billing records for at least 6 years. From a medical malpractice standpoint, 7 years is more than enough for adult patients. For minors, you must keep charts until the age of majority, plus the statute of limitations period—2-3 years in most states.

Not for nothing, but if income in the vicinity of $150,000 a year is the average podiatrist’s income (and is considered high pay), then podiatrists are being royally ripped off! This post may be highlighting the salary that is supposed to get them to forget about their dreams. Sorry but this is not a high income. Not even close to high income.
I earned more than that in 1985. You don’t need a medical degree of any kind to earn this amount of money. Insurance-dependency is throwing pennies at podiatrists and they’re supposed to be satisfied because this is considered high income?

Very popular with women in the 15th through the 17th century, these hollowed out wooden platform shoes, called "chopines", were designed to protect dresses from the mud and street dust. They were very popular in Venice and were worn by noblewomen and courtesans.
