PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
TX Podiatrist Uses External Fixation to Treat Charcot Foot

"The Charcot foot presents as hot, red, and swollen, and it has an incidence of a trauma and an infection and an open wound,” says podiatrist Dr. Thomas Zgonis at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Charcot foot eventually leads to a bone infection that’s almost impossible to heal.

Dr. Thomas Zgonis

The UT Health Science Center sees more cases of Charcot foot than most other centers because doctors like Zgonis are leading the way in what's called external fixation — a way to stabilize the foot and prevent amputation using what looks like a cage. “It applies multiple pins away from the bone infection that allows us to simultaneously compress and fix a deformity and off-load the entire extremity of the patient,” Zgonis said.

PODIATRISTS AND SPORTS MEDICINE
NM Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis

“Plantar fasciitis sets in when someone overuses his or her heels, as with heavy sports training. It also occurs when people have flat feet or high arches, experience tight Achilles tendons, change shoes, wear poor quality shoes or gain weight,” said Dr. Derek Harper, podiatrist with The Memorial Hospital. “Stretching is often the most effective treatment as 85 percent of people with plantar fasciitis feel better with stretching techniques 3 to 4 times a day,” Harper said.

Dr. Derek Harper

Harper uses conservative solutions first, including orthotics, stretching, and icing. Sometimes physical therapy can help. “If surgery is needed, it’s minimally invasive. An endoscopic plantar fasciotomy releases the ligament, allowing it to heal. Only a small number of people need surgery but those that have it are happy with it 90 percent of the time,” Harper said.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
IL Podiatrist Holds Sock Drive for the Homeless

A Belleville podiatrist’s office is asking for the community’s help to give back to people who are homeless. Podiatry 1st on Memorial Hospital’s Belleville campus is collecting donations of new and used socks in all sizes, shapes, and colors — even the single, unmatched ones — for homeless shelters in the area. The office hopes its sock drive — called “Socks for Santa” — will become an annual charity, according to Dr. C. James Anderson.

Dr. C. James Anderson

“...It will continue to grow into a community effort,” he said. “Who knows, Socks for Cupid may be next.”  Anderson is the owner, practicing physician, and founder of Podiatry 1st.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
10 Steps to Help Make Your Practice Labor Compliant - Part 2

With employment litigation prevalent, most employers have come to expect that a former or current employee will, at some point, sue or file a complaint. Medical practices have to be more proactive to protect themselves. The following steps may not only help prevent the problem, but better position a medical practice to defend a case brought by an employee, should one arise.

2. Make Sure Employees Receive Training. To help avoid possible harassment or discrimination claims by employees, a practice should ensure that employees are trained to know what conduct is and isn't acceptable. Similarly, supervisors must be trained so they can intervene and stop conduct that, if left unattended, may result in a lawsuit against not only the practice, but possibly individual managers and employees as well.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: Negotiating a Lease When You Can't Get Office Overhead Disability Insurance

My insurance company canceled my office overhead disability insurance. This puts me into a precarious position. If I should become disabled, I will be strapped with a lease on my office that could throw me into bankruptcy. Is there a way of negotiating a lease where there is a clause for disability? How would this be worded and has anyone else experienced this?

Name Withheld

Editor's comment: PM News does not provide legal advice. Although an attorney can easily draft such a lease clause, there is no incentive for a landlord to accept this new term. A better idea is to simply find a new insurance company to provide this coverage. Another alternative is to join a partnership or group practice in which such clauses are standard.

YOU CAN'T MAKE THESE THINGS UP
RE: NJ Podiatrist Rewarded by Patient

I walked into a treatment room and the patient said, "I accomplished my goal of four million steps for 2016."

This is what 4 million steps looks like

I congratulated him and asked if he could put that into context for me. He handed me a framed document.
