Query: Jones Compression Bandage Coding
What is the CPT code for the application of a
Jones compression
bandage?
When I looked it up, I come across strapping;
ankle and/or foot (CPT
29540), leg casting, or splint application. In
the description,
however, of the splint or cast application
coding, it specifies use
of plaster of Paris or other casting material.

Response: I will generally apply a Jones
bandage/dressing at the
time of surgery. In that case, it is not
separately payable from the
surgical global allowance. Similarly, if, in
your office, you were
treating an injury (e.g., fracture or
dislocation), and billed the
initial encounter under the specific global
treatment code, your
application of a Jones compression bandage would
be included.
In other cases, when I fashion the Jones
compression bandage
(Webril/cotton and Unna boot) for application in
medically necessary
circumstances, I bill it as an application of
Unna boot (CPT 29580).
