Lamisil Therapy (Dr. Carver)

RE: Lamisil Therapy (Dr. Carver)
From: Steven H. Goldstein, DPM

I have no problem with using any topical
preparation for maintenance therapy. As far as
documentation, all you have to do is call Pedinol
and ask them to provide you with any scientific
documentation that their product has any efficacy
against nail dermatophytes. In addition, ask them
what studies they can show you that their product
mixed with Lamisil tablets works at all. I am
just the messenger of fact not fiction. since
Pedinol makes the product, let them provide ALL
OF US with any proof that the product is
clinically effective.

Pedinol Responds
From: Gary Strauss

I am somewhat disheartened by Dr. Steven
Goldstein's comments regarding Pedinol and our
product, Fungoid Tincture.

While Dr. Goldstein is 100% correct in his
statement that Fungoid Tincture is not indicated
for the treatment of onychomycosis, he also has a
number of inaccurate statements as well.

Regarding the lack of "scientific documentation
that Fungoid Tincture has any efficacy against
nail dermatophytes", a study was published in the
March 2001 edition of The Foot, The International
Journal of Clinical Foot Science. In the study
involving 23 patients with onychomycosis, 53% of
the 132 infected nails exhibited a clinical cure
9-12 months after initiating
treatment of a topical compound of 1 oz. of
Fungoid (miconazole nitrate 2%) Tincture and 3
Lamisil (terbinafine HCl) Tablets. Reprints of
this study are available upon request.

In addition, Dr. Goldstein stated that "this ploy
was started a few years ago by the folks at
Pedinol when their sales of Fungoid Tincture
declined..." This is a completely inaccurate
statement. Pedinol's objective is, and always has
been, to provide the podiatric profession with
the highest quality medications to treat their
patients with. As long as we do that, the sales
will follow.

We understand that there will be occasions where
a physician or patient may not be completely
satisfied with one of our products. However, as
PM News becomes an increasingly influential force
in the world of podiatry, future postings that
claim, "I am just the messenger of fact not
fiction" should have their facts straight.
