IL Podiatrist Receives Alumnus of Distinction Award from Heidelberg University

 

Matthew Garoufalis, DPM has been presented an “Alumnus of Distinction Award” from his alma mater, Heidelberg University. Dr. Garoufalis has dedicated his career to improving lives one step at a time - advancing podiatric medicine, preserving limbs, mentoring future physicians, and elevating standards of care for patients around the world. A nationally and internationally respected physician, educator, researcher, lecturer, and leader, Matthew has spent more than four decades shaping the future of wound care, diabetic limb preservation, and podiatric medicine.

A double major in biology and economics at Heidelberg, Matthew combined scientific curiosity with strategic thinking long before interdisciplinary learning became a buzzword. He earned Dean's List recognition, was inducted into both Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society and Tau Pi Phi National Economics Honor Society and emerged as a campus leader through the Excelsior Men's Society, serving as both recording secretary and president. Those experiences at Heidelberg laid the foundation for a career defined equally by service, scholarship, and leadership.
